Company information:
National Association Of Professional Women - NAPW
New York
United States

During the middle of Feb, 2009, I was contacted via a direct mailer by the NAPW, stating that I was approved for membership with this supposedly, successful group of women. I filled out the card and sent it back to the NAPW.

On Feb 19th, a "Kelly Silwany" called me at home, telling me more about this organization, stating that its members benefit from mentorship, networking, workshops, etc. I thought she said that the cost of membership was $6.89/year. I agreed to the amount and paid for what I thought was a mere $7 membership. She left me her office number and extension which is (866) 540-6279x253.

On Feb 24th, my husband asked me about a transaction placed on our credit card for $708.95 by the NAPW. I then called "Kelly" at her office number. When I heard the voice mail message, a "Emily Syliva" is heard on the greeting. I left a message with "Emily" asking her to call me back to dispute the $708.95 that "Kelly" had charged my credit card account; I did not hear back from neither "Kelly" nor "Emily".

On Feb 25th between 10:30 AM and 10:45 AM, I again contacted the company and was directed to a "Craig" who is with the "finance department of the NAPW". I explained my concerns to Craig who later in our conversation, stated that he had "listened to a recording of (my)/your conversation with Kelly". In the "recording", Craig states that I clearly understood the details of the transaction and did not understand how I could think that membership would only be $6.89. I was not aware that my conversation with Kelly was being recorded and asked for a copy of this "recording". Craig changed the subject.

I reiterated to him that I am no longer interested in being a part of the NAPW and wanted a full refund. "Craig" stated that he was not willing to give a full refund but did offer a "discounted" rate at just over $350. I again, asked for a full refund. Throughout my conversation with "Craig" repeatedly stated that if I were to go to my credit card company, based upon my "recorded conversation with Kelly", I would be charged the full amount and there would be no refund, no discount.

This went back and forth with "Craig" being belligerent, and rude until I finally said, "I cannot pay for the cost of membership that you are trying to charge me!" I was on the verge of tears by this point.

"Craig" eventually comes back with a $180 membership fee for the NAPW; by this point, I relented. Later on the evening of Feb 25th, I discussed my ordeal with "Craig" and the NAPW with my husband.

On Feb 26th, my husband called the NAPW and asked for the “finance department” and further stated that “’Craig’ was rude to his wife when she called yesterday.” The “receptionist” transferred my husband to a “Denise” who was supposedly “over ‘Craig’”.

That conversation resulted in “Denise” crediting my account $708.95. “Denise” further stated that the credit would be issued by the following Monday.

It’s March 6th and I am STILL waiting for my credit . . . so that is why I have decided to come to the BBB for help!

Thank you for posting the information regarding the National Association of Professional Woman. I just signed up and after reading your experience I cancelled. They were charging me $489. I just contacted the contact person whose name is Vangie, who now indicates that someone from accounting would have to contact me. I will now contact the credit card company in order to stop the processing. Thank you again. for sharing what may be happening to many women who get pulled in with the scam of becoming a part of an "elite" organization. jr

I am so appreciative of you posting your experience. I also received the same letter, and I actually just went to the website and signed up for memebrship. Luckily I googled "Napwusa""& "membership fees" and your post came up. Being I just started my own company I was excited about a group who helped women in business, I should have known better, nothing is free. I am looking forward to my call regarding meembership, I can't wait to tell them a few things. Thank you for your posting. It sure saved me $.

Thank You for this valuable information. I received the letter in the mail today inviting me to join. I have searched the web page only after filling out the online application. I also did a google search and found a few bad reports. I lookforward to their call so I can let them know I am no longer intrested in joining this group. The Value in this is I saved hundreds of dollars and my precious time.

I received a card in the mail offering free membership, so I sent it in. I was just contacted last week by a woman who "interviewed" me to see if I would be accepted in their organization. I was immediately suspicious because the number came up as private on the caller ID. She went on and on gushing about how fabulous I am. Then the sales pitch hit with a request for my credit card number. I immediately felt this was a scam. I told the woman that my company was facing temporary salary reductions and I couldn't afford the membership. The price then dropped & another request for my credit card number came. I told the woman that I would need to think about it. She then told me that it is cost prohibitive for them to interview people repeatedly and that my approval would not be saved - I need to pay right away. I told her I wasn't interested & hung up. Glad I did and would recommend other do the same.

I was just called yesterday concerning my application for membership. She called me at work...interviewed me to assure I was qualified and started quoting the Elite; Preferred and when I said I couldn't afford it...she continued to tell me how I could benefit from the membership...I continued to say "NO" and then she started saying she could put me in the standard group and upgrade me later. She asked if she could bill my credit card and I said "no" and she asked if it was still a budgetary issue. I said I was at work, didn't have time at this point and had to hang up because she kept going. I am very turned off by the "scam" that appears to be happening.
She's a quick talker and I'm so glad I kept saying "no" or I don't know how much they would have charged me.

I had the very same conversation with Craig just now. I feel like a fool for falling for this. On the day I signed up, I googled the organization and immediately called back to cancel. I left a voicemail numerous times on Linda Sharek's line. Another woman called me later wanting to know why I decided to cancel my membership. She was extremely pushy and said she'd refund my money. I have yet to see a credit, and it's been a month. I started calling again last week leaving a voicemail for Craig each time. He gave me the same song and dance and I ended up with a credit of $395.99. I'll believe it when I see it. I'm determined to call back and speak with Denise now. Why hasn't this operation been shut down??

I work for a major National Alcohol Distributor and I received a letter regarding a "free" membership that "someone"referred me for so I sent it in. It sounded exciting to be part of a professional womans organization.Especially in a very male dominated business.

Tanya Barret called me yesterday and told me that she had a few more questions for me in order to approve my membership. She asked if I had 15 minutes. I said well, actuually right now would be good because I literally have abot 15 minutes before I went into a meeting. She said no thats ok, I will call you tomorrow. I told her her that really right now would be better since we have the time but she insisted that she called back. Ok, fine I said I will be available tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with her today. She talked about how elite the organization was and asked me all sorts of questions. I had the nagging feeling after about 5 minutes it was leading up to a sales pitch. Being a Sales Trainer...I should have seen it way before I got suckered in.

At the end she says I could definitley qualify as a member of their organization and even better she wants to highlight me as one of their 'Women in the Spotlights" and I admit I felt flattered especially after all of the battles I had to fight to get where I am in this business.
Then she drops the bomb "Elite" membership cost $689 and "Preferred" membership cost $489 she suggested of course the "Elite" membership but wanted to know which one I preferred. I told her my budget would only allot for about $100 because I have a lot of seminars coming up. So she said she would sign me up for a "Trial" membership.

I though could do that...a membership...put a little something extra on the resume. But then she hits you with getting the "Esteemed" Plaque that costs another $99 and do I want1 or 2??? (I admit I kind of admire the sales pitch a little now)

By some weird grace of god my card number didn't go through. Probably something simple like they didn't process the payment yet. For a big company like ours... it happens, (31st privatley held company in the nation) and I turned my expense in late so my corporate card was on hold. (found out they paid it today along with 30 other cards and will be turned back on tomorrow) Of course her demanor changed drastically, she became very rude! Which I think is now a blessing in disguise.

So now I was feeling weird and wanted more information and found all of your information. I definitely do not want to be a part of this organization now. It is just another sales pitch...All the information they offer I could find myself with just a little reseach. Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, ASTD I see now it is not worth it. It feels like a scam...what is embarrassing the most Is I feel like a sucker especially after all the battles I had to go through (and will still have to fight in the future) I was really hoping their would be a professional site that could offer something without nickel & diming you. I am actually embarrassed now...

So glad that you shared about your experience.

I have received similar types of authors from "Who's Who" organizations/publishers and poetry publishers, but this is the first time I've gotten one from an alleged women's organization.

Beware, Ladies, shred this letter while it's still sealed in the envelope.

i just got a letter from napwusa stating that my membership was approved. I went online to fill out the application form and submitted. Something made me check the internet to see what exactly napwusa is and I came across this post about them scamming people. I will be ready to give them a piece of my mind when they call me tomorrow. One thing to be suspicious of is the basic website they put up. THere is no information on what they are, how to contact them and so forth. Beware if you get this letter and don't even think of filling out an online application. Napwusa is a scam.

I had the same experience today when I agreed to the "preferred" memebership with Valery John at 866.540.6279 x 265. I called her back 3 hours later after having a change of heart and wanting to cancel. I left her a vmail and an hour later, Crag (x 240) called back assuring me that this was a non-revocable transaction. As in the other experiences noted, he told me the conversation I had with Valery was not only recorded, but that someone was listening as well.

After some unpleasant back and forth I told Craig I was done and that my next call would be to my credit card company to dispute the charge. He put me on hold to check with his manager, came back and stated that his organization wants only the happiest of members and that his manager agreed to credit my card back the $500. Oh, they also charge you $20 to ship you your starter/welcome kit.

I went back through my conversataion with both Ms. John and especially Craig and the whole experience felt like a super scam. I also felt bullied and pressured and suspect my credit card will not see the credit promised until I follow through and dispute the charge.

I received my letter from NAPW dated April 17, 2009 because my mom and I just started a business, I was suprised when they only sent me a letter and not my mom. Especially when my mom is listed as the head owner of the company and I am the co-owner; I would of thought my mom would of receivd this letter. So I filled out the return application and placed a note with it requesting that a application is to be sent to my mom as well; but now that I see your posting, once I am contacted by NAPW I am going to decline any offers made.

Lisa Brooks is very helpful, spoke with her yesterday 866.540.6279 x 263 and have received a full refund. Had the same horrible experience calling Craig, his BS line about the recorded call, etc. Called my credit card company to see if the credit was legit, it was.

Thank you so much for this information. I've recently been contacted by "Kelly" who informed me that she would recommend me for the exclusive membership of $489 (which I initially interpreted as $4.89). The more we talked, she was persistance that I give her my credit card information. I informed her that I would not make a decision until I do research and have something in writing.

She said that she will not send me any info in the mail prior to me paying the membership fee. She then proceeded to go down on her price from $489 to a standard fee of $139.

I told her "thank you for your time, but I am not interested." This was yesterday and you would think that "Kelly" from NAPW would STOP calling me, but she called me AGAIN this morning and left a voice message ( I deleted it).

This is NOT a good business and it needs to get shut down for misleading people.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

I just got off the phone with Patricia, who was pleasant. She recommended me for the Women in Spotlight as well. But I declined several times the membership fees. What I find amusing about all the comments is the people who actually thought they meant $4.89 or $6.89. Seriously, we are all professional women, why in the world would you think that someone telling you something costs 689 they mean 6.89? I knew right away exactly how much she wanted. Its to bad in times like these people are trying to get you to pay money, but I cannot agree that this is a scam, they are upfront about the costs to you. Or at least Patricia was with me. Outragious price Yes, scam I don't think so. That old saying Buyer Beware.
I'm sorry some of you fell for it.

I agree that I think this is a ploy to generate cash flow for whomever. They just called me at work, I asked a few questions and got a stern answer everytime. That I must do it now, cant wait... I agree, I knew is was $689 or whatever other price she threw at me. I told her I just wanted to Google the association and see what it is about before I join. She didnt like that answer, and said "Well didnt you look at the post card before you sent it in"...I said not really, I assumed you would send some type of brochure or literature pertaining to the orginization. OH no, didnt like that answer so she finally got mad and hung up on me, no that was "professional".
