I joined the National Association of Independent Landlords (NAIL) as a standard member on May 9, 2008 with the objective of being able to obtain a credit report of my tenant when become necessary. When I tried to sign in for the membership on the internet, I found the instruction on the webpage was not easy to follow, and the process was very complicate and confused. Later, I called NAIL and gave the person I spoke to all the confidential information. When I went back to the internet, I filled in a member application sheet again with all the confidential information which includes social security number, credit card number, expiration date and the security code. In addition, NAIL asked me to Fax them a copy of my driver license and my property information. So I went to a nearby Fax store the same day, and completed the Fax as they requested.

On Monday, May 12, I received a call from my credit card company. They wanted me to verify that if I made a purchase of $750. It turned out that someone had just used my identity to make a fraud charge. The incident brought me so much trouble I can not describe here. I called NAIL to inform them the incident. The lady I spoke to was not friendly. And she also told me that they did not receive any fax sheets from me. But, I had a print sheet from the Fax store, which showed the fax had been completed. Then, where did the fax go? It clearly indicated that, the way NAIL handles all the confidential information, has a question mark. About my identity theft, I do not know who did it and how it happened. But, it happened right after I gave all the credit card information to NAIL. Therefore, I regret that I did business with NAIL.

I am growing concerned about the NAIL as well. I just submitted all of the required information to set up an account with them and faxed in a copy of my drivers license, proof of ownership of my rental property, and the first page of my phone bill per their request. I was told that I would receive a Prequalification Service Report for a tenant and included the tenant's application with all of her identity details. The report was supposed to be sent to me via email by the end of the day yesterday 5/16/08 and it never arrived. When I called to check on it during the day, the person I spoke with did not seem to know what he was doing and kept asking me questions that I had already provided on my fax cover sheet. The NAIL is closed for the weekend. I have left a message requesting a call back to discuss the missing report.

Update: I never received a call back from the company, or the report I requested. After I made a call to them, I was told that they had no idea why my report had not been prepared and that no charge had been made to my credit card. A Manager named Britney offered apologies and a free report but after my experience with their lack of professionalism, communication, and follow-through, I declined and have since found another organization that I feel is far more professional and well-organized. When I asked them about the above-mentioned Identity Leak complaint, they stated that according to them, no identity leak had occurred and that it had been a misunderstanding.
