Menards asst. store manager

I was doing an extensive bathroom remodel and needed to buy a bunch of things. I went to Lowes, Home Depot and Menards. I talked to each about specials going on. At Menards, April, the Asst. Store Manager, told me if I got the Big Card, I would get 2% store credit on everything that I buy (issued at the end of the year) and right now if I spent over $299 I could get no interest for six months. My wife and I spent nearly two hours picking out everything (tile, grout, faucets, tub faucet, tp holder, towel bars, hooks, toilet, etc.). It rang up just under $1300.00. The cashier asked if we wanted no interest OR 2%. I told her what April told us. April was called and admitted she said that and then she said, "Sorry". Menards wouldn't bunch. An email to corporate did nothing. We are talking about $27 store credit for what they said which is much, much less than their cost but still nothing!

I have worked in retail for years. You have no idea what you are talking about. I am guessing you are the one giving poor service. There are some customers that you can't please, but you still grin through your teeth and do whatever you can for them. Not sure where you were trained, I'm guessing the same place as the other people we are complaining about. I always gave exceptional service, which is why I am so picky when I go places. I know the way I should be treated and shouldn't be treated. Things that should be said and things that shouldn't be said in front of a customer.

Menards re-stocking fee

I purchased a product online from Menards (big mistake) and was not told until I had to return the product that it was subject to a 25% re-stocking fee. Attempting to communicate with Menards is a joke. They have no customer service phone number so you have to correspond via email. This would be okay if they would actually respond in a timely fashion. However, it would take several business days (and sometimes over a week) to respond to simple questions. When I asked them to waive the re-stocking fee, they wouldn't even acknowledge my request. Dealing with Menards is the single most frustrating customer service experience I've ever had.

Try reading the Special Order Contract that you signed first next time. Or better yet, don't order something you don't need. They charge a restocking fee because they are not a warehouse to store all the stupid special order ### that no one else is going to buy.

Menards go

Menards, really, MICROMANAGEMENT TO THE EXTREME. Big brother is alright in moderation. As a manger, I spent 45 minutes with a guest (secret shopper) bending over backwards for them helping them with insulation, after spending 8 hours resetting the insulation isle for one of the fun plan-o-grams. After taking care of all questions, making the sale, loading the cart and walking the products to the register for the guest, I was written up for not asking if they wanted any staples...SERIOUSLY! I was written up for so much BS it made my head spin. In all of my military and civilian experience, I have never been reprimanded, until working for Menards. I was showing a CCS team member how to use his MENARDS issued cell phone and spent hours with the stores GM explaining why we were using cell phones at the BM desk, even with no guests present, because someone with nothing better to do at the General Offices than watch the store cameras saw us. MENARDS, get a clue, anyone with any personal accountability and self respect won't work for these circumstances. I was written up for not taking a lunch within 5 hours of punching in because when I went to the desk to punch out for lunch, I was stopped by a guest for help, which I gave. I did my job despite what GO says and I was reprimanded for it, giving good customer service does not jive with corporate policy...WTF?

GoMenards is a liar. Pay and benefits is well, lol. What a joke. You must be a GO making positive comments to deceive us. This place is so micromanaged and break so many labor laws its not funny. They are not an employee friendly workplace and more like a minimum wage Chinese sweatshop. I felt more like a piece of s&*t subhuman slave than a actual working human being with the way they treat employees. They keep you after your time off and seems they want you there every minute the store is open meaning your life is Menards. No work/life balance. Their motto is Menards comes first and everything else gets in the way. This place is good for single people who are workaholics and don't care about their families/friends. I work hard and get the job done but I'm not working 50-55+ hours every week and putting up with outrageous policies/rules from corporate, no thanks. Definitely, the worst job I have ever had. I thank God that he blessed me with a brain to get a college degree and not to work for pathetic places like Menards. I have a better career now as a scientist. You wonder why you guys have such high turnover and can't keep management positions filled because you burn your workers out.

My dad died in 2007 in a car accident. The same time I was suppose to leave for the company "boot camp" manager training. Three days non stop training 6 in the moring till 10 at night. It took everything my manger had to get them to let me stay home and be with my family during that difficult time. The General Office has no compassion for human life. I left the company the following year because of this, after 13 years witht the company.

Menards Is an Interesting company. I worked there for 5 years and enjoyed the people/customers. I moved up rapidly and did very well however never really understood why they are so heavy handed on their workers. I received more letters of praise for my customer service than anyone else in the store and did very well with sales. In fact my weekend sales for my department were always 26% higher than the projected or payroll required numbers. All of that being said when my dad was told he had stage 4 lymphoma in his entire body I asked to be able to take him for his treatments my GM told me if I didn't use my vacation time or get a written letter from the Dr saying "It Had To Be Me Taking Him" that I would get fired (Even though I had no write ups on my record).
I sent an Email to GO to ask for special consideration since my dad was dying.
All they said was no -

I no longer work for Menards and I honestly can't believe they can be such heartless $$$$suckers after the amount of money I made them. When I left, My customers left as well. I still keep in touch with my contractors and to date I can say that the store I worked at has lost atleast $600, 000 in sales every year. I know this number because as a department manager I could ask the CCS team for their yearly sales.

I dont think Menard's is a company thats worth working for. Even the GO workers dont make alot of money. They will ask for people with a 4 year degree to work for $13 an hour and be insulted if your not willing to move to freakin eaclair for that money...

Seriously if you shop at Menard's make sure its because you can't go somewhere else.

Seams alot like a communist company.

Menards poor customer service

I've never had a problem with Menards rabates but I mailed the form for rebate #5365 on 05/16/2011. When a record was not present on rebates site on 06/27/2011 I used the " contact customer service" section of the web site to ask if I could send a second request or they could verify my rebate with the tracking ID assigned to my purchase. I got a prompt response that said to wait 10 days for a definitive response while they researched my case. After no further response, on 07/13/2001 I replied to their acknowledgement requesting a response to my question. Today is 07/23/2011 I still have no response. Seems there really is no customer service for Menards rebates!

Menards trusting word of manager

on june 29th went to menards to buy stone, ran into a pressure washer out side on sale. manager was there said
hey are you interested, he told us it was new never been used, it was a floor model. we thought well we could use it on some jobs. we ask him are you sure theres nothing wrong with it, he said no it was a display only never been fired up or anything. if you have trouble with it just bring it back and we're take care of you. well heres where it gets good, we tried to use it, locked up tighter than a drum, took it back
they won't take it back the manager said he didn't care if we ever came back to the store or not, gave me a number to this customer complaints and wished me the best more or less. we do have warranty but when wwe took it they said it wasn't covered because thers only 2 reasons it would lock up and thats not covered. and it was costing me additional 65.00 to leave it there for them to even look at it. i'll never shop at menards again even if there the only store around i'll go out of my way. basicly i should have never straid from home depot and lowes. at least they'll work with you because they care about your money. you want good product and they want your business. so bottom line menard screwed me once but they won't get me again and i will tell everyone not to shop there. best business word of mouth, honesty, loyaty, to your customers.

Menards windows do not fit

I ordered Jeldwen windows from Menards and they did not fit. They will not rectify the situation and they will not take them back without me paying another 25% to reorder. They were incredibly rude and when I ordered the windows and specified the way that my builder wanted the windows to be ordered, they did not tell me until the windows came in that they could not be ordered that way.

Menards wrong flooring

We were in the Menard's in Celina Ohio. This was our first time in a Menard's and a just looking trip ended up being a $350 purchase of flooring:. We were camping near by and couldnt take it with us so the next day we drove an hour and half home to turn around and drive back to pick up our flooring;. They had it plasic wrapped and on a skid for us when we arrived|. We got home, unwrapped it, and found out it was the wrong color". I have been told by Ray that we should have checked it before we left/. That means having it unwrapped and then waiting for someone to wrap it up again|. I guess in this economy that they can pick and choose who they compensate for their mistake?. Lowe's and Home Depot...you have our business.

JULY 21 2011.I RECEIVED AN EMAIL SAYING MY SPECIAL ORDER STORM DOOR WAS AT THE STORE FOR PICKUP. I ASKED A FRIEND WITH A TRUCK IF HE WOULD TAKE ME TO PICK IT UP.HE AGREED AND DROVE 30 MILES TO HELP ME OUT. I GAVE THE STORE EMPLOYEE MY ORDER FORM AND HE WENT TO FIND THE DOOR. HE GOT THE DOOR AND I HELPPED HIM LOAD IT ON THE TRUCK. I COMMENTED THAT THE BOX WAS AWFULL WIDE FOR MY 32 INCH DOOR, BUT HE ASSURED ME IT WAS THE RIGHT DOOR. I TOOK IT HOME UNLOADED IT AND SET THE BOX IN MY GARAGE AND MY FRIEND DROVE BACK HOME. LATER THAT DAY I STARTED TO UPACK THE DOOR AND IT WAS THE WRONG ONE. I CALLED TO COMPLAIN TO THE STORE MANAGER AND TLD THEM WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND TOLD THEM SINCE I DIDN'T HAVE A TRUCK I COULDN'T RETURN IT AND I ASKED THEM SINCE IT WAS THIER MISTAKE I FELT THEY SHOULD DELIVER IT FREE OF CHARGE. HE SAID HE COULD NOT DO THAT BECAUSE IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE I HAD THE RIGHT PACAGE BE FOR I LEFT THE SSTORE. THE STORE IS LOCATED IN KOKOMO INDIANA AND I ASSURED THEM THAT THEY WOULD NO LONGER RECEIVE ANY FURTHER BUSINESS FROM ME. THIS WAS THE THIRD SPECIAL ORDER DOOR I HAVE ORDERED FROM THEM IN THE PAST 10 MONTHS. I TRIED TO CALL THE CORPORATE OFFICE BUT THEY WON'T ANSWER THIER PHONE.

Menards stay away

Honestly people, is this what the world has come to? Internet trash talking about your perceived slights?

How many of you have actually worked in retail? I doubt any of you who are bashing retail employees have ever actually held a job in retail. If you had, you would know that IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE EVERYONE..

Someone will always find fault somewhere;. And the majority of the time, it isn't an employee's fault, it isn't a store's fault, it isn't anyone's fault but their own?.

It is unfortunate that you people are so incredibly unhappy that you have to go into a store and verbally assault an employee who obviously can't fight back (or lose their job), . I HIGHLY doubt any of you would dare say such things to someone outside of the store|.

So please, do us all a favor: stay home and keep your misery to yourself.. Or go talk to a professional, because you clearly have some serious underlying issues you need to work through|.

My husband and I bought a fence from Menards at the end of June in 2010. In December of 2010 the fence began to break. The plastic brackets where snapping and eventually the post broke and we lost several panels. I contacted Menards immediately. I sent pictures and a copy of my original receipt. They were initially friendly. After a few weeks of...

Menards practices

By the way, this is the second time they have done this: Two years ago we had a balance on our card, always made payments ON TIME, NEVER MISSED and HSBC decieded to reduce our credit limit (to about $300 over what we had already charged) this of course, put a ding on the credit score.. now here we are about two (2) years later and low and behold, once again they have done the same thing! We have NEVER been late paying them - this is really screwing up my credit ! IS there anything I can do about this? What a bunch of crap- penalizing people who PAY THEIR BILLS! shameful!

Menards misleading advertising for no interest promotions

Because I had a no interest promotion due in March 2011, Menards refused to allow me to pay for my December 2010 BIG CARD purchases; instead, they charged 24.99% apr on my Decemeber purchases and threatened continued interest charges on all BIG CARD purchases until I sent in enough money to pay off the promotion.

Menards owes me the interest they tricked me into paying.

I say tricked because no one in store management understood the conditions attached to last fall's promotion. If store management cannot find or understand the rules, how can a customer be expected to!

First you say they wouldn't let you pay for your December purchases (I don't really buy that), then you say the store management didn't understand the conditions of the promotion. I'm thinking they just didn't understand your explanation, because I sure as heck don't.

By the way, your issue isn't really with Menards, it's with the company that administers their credit cards. Which I assume is still HSBC.

Menards wrong color paint

I bought 8 gallons of off-white flat paint as I am trying to sell my house and need to paint several rooms. I put one coat on in the Master Bedroom and went to put on a second coat the next day. The color didn't match initially, but I thought they would after the second coat dried. The next day, it was obvious that they didn't match, so I took the remaining paint back to the store. The woman at the paint counter identified that several gallons had different bases. The clerk who helped me before had gotten the paint off the shelf, so this wasn't my fault. They knew I wanted the same color. Although they replaced the paint with the wrong bases, I was still out a gallon after putting on the second coat of the wrong color. I tried to explain this, but the woman at the counter wasn't having it. She said there wasn't much paint taken from the first can (it was at about half). Regardless, I think they should have either replaced or reimbursed me for the first coat I have to redo.

Service desk cashiers are supposed to take back any paint, mixed or not, for ANY reason, regardless of how much is in the can. Given the circumstances of your situation, the paint dept manager should have instructed her to give you credit on that gallon. You should have had the paint dept manager called up to approve it. She should have called back their to verify. She did a poor job taking care of this.

Menards discontinued military discount

On a shopping trip to Menard's in Lancaster Ohio on January 31, 2011, we were told by the check out person that Menard's no longer honor Military Discounts. We were stunned and asked why. The person said it had been in effect since January 1, 2011. Well that does it! We are returning to Lowe's to buy all of our shopping needs. I am very disappointed in this company for doing this, after all, these men put their lives on the line for us! You should post something in the newspaper or all of your shopping adds.

No company is required to offer a military discount. You choose to be in the military, so why should Menards have to pay for it? Times are tough, better to cut non-sensical discounts and keep staff.

Menards can't give receipts for cash sales

BLACK FRIDAY, waited in line 1 hour in the cold patiently with another say several hundred more people. The doors opened, and about 50 people NOT patiently waiting their turn, mobbed the front doors ahead of everyone else. Words were exchanged, upset people, pushing, shoving, holloring! Totally unfair ! After that, i waited in line for a check out for another 1hr., to find out that the 10 items i had just bought for gifts couldn't get a gift receipt...All because of CASH SALE..I could have had them ring each item up seperately, and done cash sale with receipt, but otherwise no gift receipts! unreal...get with the program Menards!

Gift receipts can be given on any item no matter how they are purchaed. Buying with cash has NOTHING to do with it. As stated, they need to know BEFORE the transaction is done, otherwise, NO gift receipt!

You have to tell them at the beginning of the transaction that you want a gift receipt rather than at the end. If you did then its a matter of cashier error rather than company policy.

We purchased items on an interest free 12month promotion. I was making payments no problem, paid off my bill. I get a notice 2 months later that my balance is going to collections. I pay the balance that day, which I still do not know where it came from! I try to get a loan for a new home and HSBC sent my "late" payment to the credit reporting agency! My perfect credit score dropped 100 points!?! How is this possible? I did not receive bills or late statements from this company on a monthly basis like they tried to tell me. HSBC is a thieving fruad!

I have numerous records detailing each and every call I made to HSBC, and now that I am graduated from college, I have a little more time to find a resolution.. I am beyond frustrated though... Who can we turn to for help? It seems as our money (as consumers) is worth so little to everyone. Do I really have to be owed tens of thousands of dollars for someone to care? What's worse is that this costs us something more than money, it costs us the one irretrievable element.. our time... I'm mentally exhausted, but I cannot afford to give in and give up. What an incredible disappointment it is that these large corporations are enabled to destroy the consumers who support their businesses... what a disgrace

Menards unfair employee treatment

Menard's isn't the worst retailer to work for in the world, but as many of the other employee posters have stated, fair treatment by management is completely sub-par. Occasionally you'll find managers whose problem solving and approaches to keeping employees happy and working are pretty impressive (like my own), but I would say a good 75% could not even manage their own shoelaces to stay tied. My store personally is "catch-22 central" in what it expects from its employees. I'm talking about hours offered versus the hours that are actually given. We are expected to work our given shifts, not be late, and not to cut out early nor ask for it. If any of the above are violated, you can expect a verbal or written warning the next day, or at the very least shunned on by some management. At the same time, we expect to be able to work our offered shifts from start to finish, as the whole reason we have the job is to work and make money. This past week I was scheduled to work 23 hours - I worked 9. I am expected to be OK with it, but it's extremely upsetting. Therefore: Catch 22. The job isn't for fun - it is a needed paycheck to pay bills. When most of the part timers are in college, like myself, money is tight enough as it is. Sometimes even dept managers get sent home early, resulting in their not making the 40 hr/week requirement. I like working and I do my job well - much better than part timers in other depts that get more hours than me because someone else made a huge sale. While the pay/workload ratio is fantastic and totally on my side, it does not make up for a measly 9 hours a week. What they need to remember is that the hardest working employees are usually the happiest employees, and recently I have not been a happy employee.

And for the record, I have been employed there over 3 years. Started off great, but now? No dice. Sure, maybe you can blame the economy. But if you're going to do that, why are you still hiring new people? Can't wait to quit. At least at this point I have pretty good job security, seeing as I'm one of the most knowledgeable in all aspects of the store...

I agree with all. Still working at Menards, but hoping my cleaning business picks back up. Menards in Ann Arbor is being run by 25 years old, lazy GM'S and Assistants. They favor young people have allowed dating and pregnancies amongst employee's, this is against policies. Your suppose to get written warnings, then time off then and either demoted or fired. Some can have 20+ points against them, still working. Others( just recently), great work ethics, been there since opening, no points no warnings. Boom after not being up trash outside, which was sent by an e-mailed not in person, (GM job not theirs). Had their scheduled weekend off, came to work next scheduled day, worked 2 hours, was pulled in with GM and his assistant, and his manager boss( who was totally unaware of what was going on). Was written up, give 3 days off and demoted! All at once! Where's policy? I am blown away by this. It's no wonder everyone wants to quit this store. Unfair treatment!

I worked @ Menards in Ionia, Mi. for about 4 months, that was about all I could take of their crap employment! The front end Manager, I was a cashier, was older than me (45) and yet ran that front end like a JHS Click. It was very obvious who she favored as those people got to do pretty much anything they wanted. Shut down your lane. sure no problem. Run to get coffee down the road. sure no problem. Take your lunch ealry. Of course. Meanwhile she was a complete jerk to everyone else. The management seems to be very very concerned about THEIR bonuses as well. They constantly make people go home early to "make payroll" so they're bonuses aren't effected. My manager actually came back from a managerial meeting one day very loudly boasting to her assistant managers in front of all of us that they "better start sending people home EVERYDAY and make sure we make payroll everyday unless you want you bonuses cut" Also after another time after managers came back from a convention holding a meeting, oh and ALL MEETINGS are held at night which means if you work a day shift that day you have to come back to the store that night (it's mandatory!) to sit and listen to them scold you for not getting their bonuses up, to encourage all of us cashiers to start up selling stuff off of our lanes to every customer. Why? Because they needed bigger numbers to get bigger bonuses! Nothing in it for us cashiers what so ever just pressured daily from that point on to get those numbers up so that their bonuses could improve! They are a very greedy, self serving company to work for. They do not treat their employees well and do not pay them well either. You will find no respect working for Menards in any way shape or form. They are awful!

I worked as a stocker in Housewares with a guy who disappeared more than he worked. While recuperating from knee replacement surgery, I submitted my resignation. Keep in mind that this was during a period of FMLA, so I wasn't actively working.
Now, after much encouragement on the part of one of the best managers in the store, I applied to return. But, I'm not rehireable because I didn't give 2 weeks notice. I wonder how that works when a person is out on a medical leave and not working. 2 weeks notice of what? So, apparently they'll do better with lackadaisical efforts on the part of someone who should have been disciplined long ago than they would with someone who has a work ethic, because of someone's misinterpretation. This company could do well to implement more comprehensive employee and especially management training.

All the comments here are vaild ones. I am a former full time employee. I worked here while going to college and took full time until I got a job in my field to pay my loans and bills. Its true, Menards treats there employees like dogs. The computer scheduling system is not good, and I also had mutiple problems with it. It had me work mutiple times working 10 days straight (no OT since it was in 2 different weeks) which violates Illinois law where you can't work more than 6 days straight if full time, no set schedule as a full timer, and they schedule you less than 8 hours between shifts if you close than open which again violates state law. The long hours they schedule you for (10 or more hrs) make you burn out very quickly, and they keep the stores understaffed or have everyone working the same time so nothing ever gets done and your forced to stay after your shift is over to finish projects because of this. It was fine at first getting some OT, but it got rediculious after a while. The managers are very unprofessional and agree most of them don't how to manage and lack any business sense. I want to know who picks some of these managers becasue some of them shouldn't be in these positions. This is why you guys have such high turnover. This place is a joke and is ran by a bunch of greedy, heartless people who don't value their employees hard work they do for them. Oh well, just glad to not be working there! My advice for someone who is thinking of working here is to stay clear of this place!

I think Menards is too big for its britches. The infrastructure cannot keep up with the growth rate. The issues with the computer scheduling system are ridiculous in a company this size. I have had nothing but problems with scheduling since I started. Computers are supposed to make things easier, not harder! I had an much smoother experience when I worked for a small company that had a manual time punch system. And I belong to a relatively small department! I cannot even imagine what some of the larger departments are dealing with. I agree 100% with the statements about the manner in which team members are treated. I think the company must think that since they are offering profit-sharing, they can therefore treat employees like tools instead of human beings. We must show up on time or we are docked points. However, we can be sent home early or kept late regardless of whether or not we have plans or needs. Expectations are two-way: a company has expectations of employees, but employees also have expectations of a company. Wake up, Menards, or all the profit-sharing in the world will not garner you the retention you need in order to be truly successful!

I started out loving working for Menards. It was during the winter and the two departments I started training in (Millwork and Building Materials) were pretty easy to learn. What I cannot stand is the unfair treatment of certain people and management's lack of patience with some of their employees. I think it is unfair to be scheduled 13 + hour days with a half hour lunch break (if you're lucky) and that's it. There is no direction from any of the managers if you need help with something and it's pretty obvious that some of these people probably shouldn't be managers at all. I think that their anti-union stance on things will hurt them in the long run because of all the employee laws they end up violating on an everyday basis

Apparently, this is the training that store managers get coming down from corporate as this is the same treatment offered at Hodgkins, IL. Employees schedules are changed without a day's notice, call, email, etc. Employees/students are scheduled ten hours days on week-ends and are ASKED to stay? No they are told they have to stay until the store is ready regardless if they end up working 12 hours per day total, lunch is whenever if your lucky...maybe on the tenth hour.
I thinks its time for a class action lawsuit for unfair practices much like Walmart!
