Meetup Aberdeen food and drink lovers

This group charges £10 per head when booking a table and if you pull out later, they do not provide a refund. Furthermore, if a new person takes up the vacant spot, he/she is expected to pay a further £10. The £10 from the person who could no longer make is not refunded and is not used to put forward the bill on the night so it can be shared amonst others. The organisers easily make £50-£100 a year by doing this and divide into three. In addition to this, if someone agrees to come and fails to come even in an event where you do not need to pay any deposit for more than twice, they remove you. This is unfair because a person can be ill on the bed and forget to change the RSPV on time and; if they do not charge anything, then many people shows up so how would they know if a person is missing? I am Asian and not many Asians are around where I live, hence it is easy to spot me. I still think they are being too harsh. There are 203 people joined all paying £2 per year per head for nothing. Also, meetup is no longer reminding people that an event I signed up to is approaching, instead the website sends me the most useless e-mails.

This message is total rubbish. First of all the organisers make nothing out of the group! Any money left is used in January for our birthday party. The reason this person (I know who it is) is angry is because we made her leave as time after time she cancelled at the last minute (sometimes didn't even bother telling us she wasn't coming). Quite often because of her we had spaces at meals because it was too late for us to get someone else to come. The £2 everyone pays is for the cost of the website and certainly not for the
organisers!

Meetup Charges!

I have signed up for www.meetup.com and made a meet up group there. No one actually was interested so I closed the group. Used this site a bit and found it to be pretty useless, so I deleted my credit card details and cancelled my account.
One month later they charged me! I went online and found out that for some reason my account was still there even thought I cancelled it! I contacted customer service and said that there was a mistake, explained the situation and asked for a refund but they never replied! Called my bank and blocked these guys from any further charges.

Meetup Subscription fees charged even after closing meetup group and deleting credit card details

Hi,

I had started a meetup group couple of months back for a Kids sports meetup in my area. I closed the group about 2-3 weeks back due to no interest to attend meets from the members. When closing the group, I elected to close my subscription and also to permanently remove all members from the group (i.e. not to nominate anyone else as group subscriber to continue the group). I have written an email to the meetup billing support team today and hope they will refund my amount without any fuss.

Some complaints about meetup.com regarding closing a group:

1. I searched my email account and message section on meetup.com. There is no confirmation email/message about closing the group. If anyone wants to close their group, I strongly suggest to take screenshots of the closing process as there is no other confirmation.

2. I had deleted my credit card details from meetup.com while closing my group. My card has still been charged. I think meetup.com secretly maintains card details even though your account->Settings->Payment Methods section may show that there are no saved cards

3. If anyone closes their meetup group, I suggest check back your account after 1-2 weeks to ensure there is no 'Payment Due' notice.

meetup.com replied to my email, and refunded the amount in few days. The problem in original complaint still remains but the amount was refunded.

I'm currently going through exactly what "Chanaveer" above was dealing with. I too do not want to hand the site down to anyone and simply want it closed and no be charged. Although my credit card info was blank they're still attempting to charge my card which is in "Pending" status at my bank. My bank says there's nothing they can do until it goes through, but then of course there will be bank fees to fix it.

I've written several emails to MU and all they did was send me a Help document on how to cancel my account. It said to go to "Organizer Dues" on their website. This does not exist. I've written several other emails to them stating other things I've tried in order to cancel and urging them to reverse the charges. I've heard nothing back at this time.

The only MU phone numbers available are just recordings directing you back to their website, no live people to talk to.

I have the same issue, except that I've already been billed once and there is a "next payment" notice on my account. My CC company has said that it will be a long process to undo this mess. What EMAIL address did you get for meetup? I can't find any way of contacting them and every time i try to cancel my group and/or account, i just get error pages saying "Sorry, we can't do that right now" ...

Meetup Meetup group-bay area 40+ singles club

I attended a Meetup called Bay Area 40+ Singled Club and the event host, Liz, who is now the group organizer, severely harassed me. Basically, my constitutional rights were blatantly violated! Liz demanded to search my food bag when I was leaving the Meetup without probable cause and of course, without a search warrant. The U.S. Constitution itself protects citizens from unreasonable search and seizure. This woman, Liz, grabbed my food bag without my permission, searched all the contents without my consent and then demanded to know "Is that wine bottle yours?" (I had brought a bottle of wine to the Meetup which no one opened.) She basically accused me of theft without justification and in front of 3 other Meetup members, libeling and slandering me. I look somewhat Latino and feel this bizarre search was a form of racial profiling. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MEETUP WAS HELD IN EAST SAN JOSE WHICH IS 50% LATINO AND YET OTHER THAN ME, NO ONE APPEARED TO BE LATINO. Her actions will discourage Latinos from joining Meetup and since Latinos are now about 20% of the U.S. population and 40% of the population of the county I live in, a reputation for racial profiling will be highly detrimental to Meetup’s business. Please note that the City of San Jose has strict city codes in regards to any type of racial profiling and this Meetup was held within the San Jose city limits. Liz also violated city codes in that she was acting like she was a police officer. Meetup also allowed her to remove my posting about the incident so Liz is free to engage in this behavior again and innocent Latinos will be intimidated and harassed! I have not received even a traffic ticket in over 30 years and have never been accused of any crime, not even a misdemeanor and yet I go to a Meetup and am treated like a street criminal. This is very, very disgusting. The bottom line-Meetup needs to reprimand this organizer and re-post my comments about my experience on this Meetup site. California has very strict laws about revealing product defects to consumers and this form of harassment is definitely a product defect and should be revealed to consumers. What will Liz do next? Call the police on some innocent Latino and have them arrested on false charges? Block all Latinos from joining her group? The San Jose Metro has done stories on racial profiling here in San Jose and I do not think Meetup would enjoy being part of a news story on the false arrest of a Latino at a Meetup event or blocking all Latinos from joining major Meetup groups.

Meetup Write-on meetup writers group in davie florida

April 12, 2016
To Whom it may concern:
I have an important complaint about an arbitrary, capricious, and simply wrong action of Balam Abello taken against me and which I am appealing to the Meetup organization. This action has caused me significant distress.
Balam Abello is the acting and possibly now official organizer and leader of the Write-On group that meets in Davie Florida Tuesdays at 7 PM.
Balam is a dedicated leader with a keen intellect and considerable talent/experience when it comes to writing which what the Write-On group is all about.
From the action I am about the share with you, I think his leadership style is a bit shall we say Imperial. It is an action arbitrary, capricious, and wrong to which he will brook no appeal.
I have asked him to meet with me personally to work out a solution over a cordial cup of coffee as adult to adult, man to man. Balam has neglected to respond to that request as of this writing.
The issue is best portrayed by me sharing the entirety of last Sunday’s email exchange with Balam as well as my Monday morning email to him requesting a personal meeting to seek a mutually agreeable solution.
Before I paste in this “email conversation”, let me state that I do not necessarily want Balam removed from his post. I merely want the banishment of me from this group which is very important to me personally and professionally voided.
Perhaps Balam also should be instructed to have any individual complaining of another first take up that matter with the alleged offender rather than assuming he himself should take on the role he terms and rejects as “Baby-sitter” in this email exchange. Then play judge and jury and issue what I will term an “Imperial edict” not ammendable to reason or appeal”
My relations with other members have always been mutually courteous and cordial in every respect – even friendly. Previously, my interactions with Balam Abello have always been courteous, respectful, and even friendly.
I believe he may have unspoken motives for his action, but I will omit my speculation on them and let our exchange speak for itself: (
(I quote exactly only changing the font and font size to better be able to read it given my visual disability)
=====
Balam’s unexpected email to me which I received early on Sunday morning, April 10th:
=====
“Dear Charlie,
After a great deal of deliberation, it pains me to say this to you, but, as of today, you are no longer a standing member of the Davie Writer’s Group, (DWG).
DWG is a writer’s peer review group. Its purpose is to help its members to better their writing skills, and their current writing projects.
It is expected that its members conduct themselves with the utmost decorum and respect towards one another. Members should follow well-defined guidelines, which were established long before I became its acting organizer.
The group’s common good dictates that members help other members with their writing, by making helpful commentaries and suggestions about: content, topic, structure, inconsistencies, grammar and style, etc. In other words, contributions in the form of constructive criticisms, as well as written notes on the hand-outs, is paramount.
Additionally, members should realize that at no time should they interpret critiques leveled towards their work is a criticism of them, personally. Becoming defensive and/or aggressive about it is unbecoming and disruptive.
Please abstain from attending any of our meetings. Of course, you probably have develop friendships with members of the group. If you do so wish it, you can contact them on your own volition. My only concern is the groups wellbeing.
I wish you success with your current and future writing projects.
Regards,
Balam.”
=====

My response to Balam’s initial response sent Sunday April 10th :
=====
“Dear Balam,
I hope you will reconsider your position.

Despite my belief that a healthy debate of critiques is important to fully understand them and their merit to best be able to incorporate their message into my writing, I am perfectly capable of simply listening to reactions without comment or debate. If that is truly what you want, I can and will behave that way.

I think that will lessen the benefit of those critiques to me, but such is life. I have learned a great deal from these discussions/debates, but if that is what you want I can and will comply.

I do agree wholeheartedly with the purposes of the group. I personally have benefited immensely from both hearing the comments of others on both the work of others and that of myself. My writing has improved considerably as a result of this group.

I have on several occasions gone out of my way to praise written critiques of others which I felt helpful as I did with Jackie and Steve last week. It wasn't the first time.

I also went out of my way to thank Rick some weeks ago for us having a verbal debate on the use of shotguns in "Dana's Big Case". Without that debate (as I saw it) I would not have taken his comment seriously - a comment which - once fully understood - changed my entire book for the good.

Please, Balam, view the whole picture.

I cannot imagine that your concern extends to my verbal critiques of others. Aside from asking occasional clarifying questions my comments in group have always been positive and encouraging.

Indeed, I have heaped praise on the efforts of others when I thought it deserved. Also I have kept my mouth shut on occasions when I had serious problems with work some presented.

Most certainly others - particularly yourself - do not hold back. I know your comments are meant to be helpful and you are an excellent and knowledgeable critique for the most part, but your comments are often quite strong. (not really talking about your critiques of my work)

If any part of your proposed action relates to my lack of participating in written critiques of others, please understand that while I do not advertise it, my eyesight is such that I have great difficulty reading the small type most other writers in the group use.

I can focus on something written in small type briefly, but am physically incapable of comfortably reading extensive small type writings.

This is the reason I myself write in large type and read books only in large type. I cope with this handicap very well other than in writing group. I can find large type versions of books readily. I easily can use the zoom on my computer to read emails, posts, and webpages.

I cannot image either that you have concern with my interpersonal interactions with others in the group. Aside from the occasional, well meant, lightly put tease of some, they have been uniformly positive. I had significant success in life more because of my ability to get along with others than either my verbal or analytic skills. I like people.

Privately and quite frankly, I don't hold the highest opinion of one or two in our group, but I think I do an excellent job of keeping that fact to myself. I suspect from your hopefully provisional edict others are not so kind. I find such behind the back criticisms of a person reprehensible and will not engage in such behavior.

I will say privately to you that I often wonder at the reading comprehension of others in the group at times. (again I am not speaking in reference to my own work) I often hear questions that indicate the questioner has not noticed or remembered something one of the writers has written earlier in a piece. I do think a few are on occasion rigid and ill-informed and on rare occasion even intemperate.

Take for the example Lee and his advocacy of frequent somewhat arbitrary use of commas which I find contrary to writing good prose - a position I have often seen taken by well-known writers and teachers of writing.

As I recall, he demanded for me to show him the comma problem he had thrown out verbally the previous group and to which I had spoke. (Perhaps I should not have brought it up. No one is perfect.) Then he threw down my writing of the week on the table and for some reason went into a defense of his age. I had said nothing of his age. This, Balam, is destructive group behavior.

Perhaps, I have rambled too long already.

My essential message is that I will comply if that is what you want. I would like you to revoke your suspension of me which is in effect also a suspension of a blameless Carl who will have great difficulty attending group without the ride and friendship I provide him. Carl, like me, greatly enjoys the group and benefits from the discussions of his work. Carl's writing is a very important aspect of his life.

Sincerely,

Charlie

PS: I hesitated to bring this up, but perhaps I should air this so we can clear the air between us.

You wrote me on Facebook that we needed to have a talk on etiquette and asked for my phone number. I replied by sending you my number.

Later, I added a complaint about being "talked over" in the group by you and two others last week. I now understand perhaps you were exasperated with my proclivity for debate, but Balam you most certainly did cut off my explanation as to why the pre-sworn in fictional Trump was portrayed in a far less burlesque manner than you would have expected from me - and he is portrayed once officially the President. That is not a matter I need to discuss here, but I must say your over-talking rather than waiting for me to finish was not appropriate.

You also may have been annoyed by my private timing of folks last week. While I well understand we had more time because of fewer readers, it was something provoked by your actions in weeks previous where you objected to my large print, few words per page work on the basis of the thickness of my handout. I couldn't help but note that in these recent weeks you have been far more rigid with my time than that of others. Perhaps I am wrong in this perception but I think it is something we both should reflect upon.

It also occurs to me that the politics of my recent writing may be troublesome to other and/or to you. You have publically referred to my interest in the Donald as an "obsession". I know that my concern for what harm this man might do for our country is strong, but I do object to it's characterization as an obsession.

I know that you and I do not share a common political viewpoint, but I respect you and your right to have a different point of view. There well may be Trump supporters in the group that my recent writing upsets that don't express their upset openly but do express their concerns to you. Again I hesitate to propose this possible conspiracy theory of my own. However, if it has any validity, it is not the American way and not appropriate in this or any other forum.

LOL, perhaps I err in debating so long your provisional decision when your given reason for that decision was my proclivity to debate. I hope not.

I have not shown anger or engaged in abuse in this reply. My participation in this group is very very important to me for many reasons as it is to Carl. I wanted to make my case fully to you to allow me to continue attending group as forcefully as I could.

Once again, I will comply with a gag order on debating if you wish. Hopefully, we can continue on in a friendly courteous manner. I now know I will effectively be on probation.

CHM”

=====

Balam’s response to my initial response to his unexpected email. Received Sunday Morning April 10th:
=====
CHM: Sadly, I seem to have misfiled or otherwise lost Balam’s second email which was a reply to my first. Hopefully, Balam will be willing to share with us its exact contents. Let me reconstruct its message as best I can short of getting a subpoena for the release of that email.
======
Balam’s tone dramatically changed from “firm but cordial” to “hostile and abusive”
Even in the salutation I was now Charles instead of Charlie
Among the accusations he made were that:
I was selfish and did not even bring a pen to group to make corrections/comments on the work of others. He explicitly said in effect that I wanted a free ride. That is, to have my work reviewed while not helping others with their work.
This despite just in my second email to him I had written to him of my difficulties in reading the small type (small and hard to read for me) others use and thus physically could not provide typo/grammar/spelling comments.
I had also offered that I did listen intently and usually offered comments.
As you can see and my reply I later offered to write down my verbal feedback already given if he so demanded.
Despite this, this second email, he went on to accuse me of at times sleeping in group when others are reading their work aloud.
As you will see in my reply, I responded that there was one week when I dragged myself to group. though sleep deprived and may have dozed at times that one week. I didn’t say, but I had done so my friend, Carl, with no other means to get there could attend.
I am after all over 70 years old.
In his response Balam also coldly (and I must say heartlessly) accused me of trying to get sympathy and “manipulate” him by bringing up Carl - a good man and good friend with significant physical limitations into the picture - at all.
He also stated he was tired of “baby-sitting” the group for me and that numerous members of the group had complained to him that my behavior at group – specifically my tendency to debate critiques of my work – was disruptive. He further went on to say that at least two members had stopped attending specifically because of my presence
I believe it was at the close of his email when he responded to my earlier statement that: I and my work had benefitted greatly from group feedback and that had on several occasions thanked the group and specific individuals for their helpful feedback.
He responded to my concern with the following and this I can quote from memory accurately:
“If you need an editor, go out and hire a professional”
Hardly a comment consistent with the purpose and goals of the group he had quoted to me at length earlier in his reply.
There were considerably more negatively phrased words in his reply, but my mind is accurate but not photographic. I sincerely hope Balam will share with you and me this second email just as he sent it to me.
=====

My response to Balam’s response above to the second and absusive email Balam had sent in response to mine. This sent Sunday April 10th:
:
I WANT TO CONTINUE WITH THE GROUP.

(NO I AM NOT SHOUTING. CAPS WERE ON WHEN I STARTED THIS REPLY, AND I DON'T WISH TO TAKE FURTHER TIME FROM MY EDITING FOR THE DAILY NEWS TO FIX THIS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE A NON-ISSUE.)

THE OTHER AREAS I ADDRESSED NEED NOT BE ADDRESSED NOW OR AT ANY TIME IN THE FUTURE. THEY ARE SUBSIDIARY ISSUES TO ONE SINGLE OVER-REACHING ISSUE.

YOU SAID I AM TO DEFENSIVE TO COMMENTS ON MY WORK AND FIND THAT UNACCEPTABLE.

I SAID I WILL OBSTAIN FROM GIVING ANY DEBATIVE REACTIONS TO ANY SUCH CRITIQUES PERIOD. I WILL EFFECTIVELY ROLL-OVER AND PLAY DEAD. I WILL IN THE FUTURE NOTE ANY COMMENTS AND SAY ESSENTIALLY NOTHING IN RESPONSE BUT THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK.

WHAT FULLER COMPLIANCE COULD YOU WANT?

EVERYTHING ELSE I WROTE BACK TO YOU IS EITHER SUPPORTIVE THAT I WAS HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN A GOOD MEMBER OR SOME PRIVATE ASIDES TO SHARE MY FEELINGS AND IN ONE OR TWO CASES HURT FEELINGS. THESE HAVE NO RELEVANCY TO THE MATTER AT HAND.

i SAID I WILL RESPOND TO YOUR EXPRESSED CONCERN. WHAT MORE NEED I DO. ARE THERE UNSPOKEN ISSUES WITH MY CONTINUED ATTENDENCE?

I WANT TO CONTINUE WITH THE GROUP. I WANT MY DEAR AND BLAMELESS FRIEND, CARL WHO LACKS EASY TRANSPORTATION TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO EFFORTLESSLY ATTEND.

CANDIDLY I CANNOT FATHOM THIS SECOND EMAILS CONTINUED BANISHMENT WHILE THINKING APPROACH. PLEASE, EXPLAIN.

SINCERELY AND COURTEOUSLY,

CHARLIE”

=====

BALAM’S TERSE AND UNWAVERING RESPONSE TO MY EMAIL ABOVE RECEIVED SUNDAY APRIL 10:
=====
“Dear Charlie,
I want to acknowledge I read your email.
You bring up many issues, which I cannot address at this point in time.
For now, please abstain from attending the meetings. Upon my return, we can take up this issue again.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Balam”
(CHM: I assume Balam the return to which Balam refers above is the six week or two-month trip abroad he plans to start the end of May.)

=====
MY RESPONSE TO THE LACK OF FURTHER RESPONSES TO DATE FROM BALAM. (I had waited till Monday for him hopefully to be more objective) I SENT THE FOLLOWING ON MONDAY MORNING APRIL 11:
=====
“4-11 16 8:28 AM

Dear Balam,
I hope this day finds you calmer and more open to compromise.
My work day was destroyed by your “out-of-the-blue” email yesterday morning and the subsequent email exchange that ensued. This at a time I particularly needed to be focused on my work.
Carl and I met personally last night for an extensive discussion.
Carl had reviewed the entire exchange of emails. Carl agrees that your proposed actions and your emails supporting those actions are an arbitrary, capricious, and intemperate over reach of your authority.
He thought it unfortunate that he too would be deprived of the forum which has been very helpful to the elevation of his craft though he un-debatably is blameless.
From the first, Carl suggested you and I have cordial meeting face-to-face, mano a mano, adult to adult – perhaps over a cup of coffee at a Starbucks - to discuss this issue and come to a mutually agreeable solution.
I think he is on the money, and would like to meet with you soonest.
I hope you are agreeable and can meet with me sometime today or before the group meeting tomorrow.
Carl further pointed out that lacking such a meeting and a mutually acceptable compromise, I have a Constitutional right to confront my accusers.
If you are not willing to meet and work this out amicably, I will have no choice but to take counsel on my legal options in this matter.
I don’t believe that either of us would want to incur the time and expense of depositions from you and other group members which inevitably would be an early step in any such procedures.
You have my email. You have my phone number. When can we meet?
Sincerely and courteously.
Charles Meyer”
=====

There has been no response to this last email I sent to Balam early on Monday morning.
I therefore am filing this complaint with the Meetup organization.
Since I cannot reasonably expect an immediate reply, my friend Carl and I will attend tonight’s meeting just as we both have – missing only the occasional meeting – for more than a year.
I sincerely hope Balam lets this matter drop.
If not “I will serve” him with this complaint and offer to read it as my reading to the group of the evening instead of my work on my latest novel.
If that is necessary, I will abide by the consensus of the group publically stated and remain or leave as that consensus dictates.
If Balam continues to resist a compromise and will not allow a public reading of my charge against him, I will likely leave but bring this well documented complaint to my attorney for a civil rights filing. I may or may not prevail. In the court’s eyes this may be a trivial even somewhat frivolous matter given the bigger problems of law and order in our world of today.
However, with the filing of the suit, I will have a right to demand depositions of Balam and all the members of the group (perhaps current and former) to among other things determine if the Balam’s allegations of complaints and departures of members of the group because of my presence is indeed a valid one.
I regret and do not take likely the inconvenience and expense (primarily to me on the latter) this action will inflict upon members and former members of the group when subpoenaed to be deposed.
However, I will not let my civil rights be trampled upon by over reach of Balam Abello. And de facto my friend, Carl Felix, a potentially great play write and disabled stroke victim with no other easy means of transportation to the group. (which is something like fifteen miles from his home.)
The interruption of my work for a living – particularly bothersome at a time I have been working toward a tight deadline is enough.
I have not been able to concentrate to finish the necessary editing for publication that could bring me significant compensation as well as attention by the public.
What has turned into a time and soul consuming “appeals” process and my very upset state of mind by it have prevented me from doing any editing work since I received Balam’s unexpected email.
This editing is a job that was well advanced, and I had every confidence I would be able to complete on Sunday April 10. Then I got Balam’s email.

Sincerely,

Charles H. Meyer, Margate, Florida - April 12th 2016

Meetup Abuse and harrassment

I was a member for a long time now, but for no reason I have been unfairly removed from 2 meetup groups! Actually all that happened because some women were jealous of me and didn't want me there. They have tarnished my reputation with lies and have damaged my reputation. This started back in August and all these months I've suffering. They held meeting to degrade me and talk about me and shared my last name with men who could potentially be stalkers. I contacted Meetup support, but they did noting to help me. I'm very upset and disappointed.

Meetup Support

I have submitted two complaints to meetup.com regarding being removed from 2 groups because of rumours and gossip which are tarnishing my reputation and upsetting me immensely. My last name was given to people and my private life has been exposed and even meetings held to discuss my private life with members.. I am not paranoid and know this is all happening because of a woman who despises me because her ex-husband fell in love with me and was my common-law husband for 3 years. Support has said they have done nothing wrong... I believe they have violated my privacy and hope to have something done about it.. but they have dismissed my complaints and have been very condescending in their responses. I am looking for work in town and find that these issues may affect my reputation and integrity..

Meetup Lack of management of organizers

Avoid this group! They were extremely rude and when I tried to communicate with them regarding the issue, Trang To (one of the organizers) refused to have a professional conversation, continued to be rude, and then kicked me out of the group.

The events they run as "networking" events are a sham. They profit by booking a small space and then charging admission for a large number of people. You can't even move in the room let alone connect with anyone!

Meetup No one shows up for any events

Hosts and members do not show up for events.
There have been 3 events for this group I have attended over the past 3 months: P.F. Chang dinner night, movie night, and cooking class. For the P.F. Chang dinner night (8/23/2013), there were supposed to be ~10 attendees. The host never showed up or explained why, 4 of us showed up, we waited 30 minutes before seating, the restaurant had to change the table/seating arrangements. The cooking class was supposed to be at an event leader's home (~10/20/2013). Well, 3 women showed up on her porch, and not only was the event leader not home, the house was empty. Neighbors came out to ask us if they could help us. We told them why we were there, and they said that woman (the event leader) had moved a few weeks before. The event leader never explained why this event failed. All 3 members left. The movie night can be summed up as this: no one showed up except for me, and no one cancelled the event. The event leaders for this group obviously are not organized, responsible, and do not know how to run a meetup event. It's not that difficult. I have left this group as of today (11/3/2013).

Meetup Scam website

This site is a huge scam. Once you sign up you'll be harassed with endless e-mails, and changing your e-mail preferences is a major pain if you sign up to any of the groups. If you complain about the e-mail volume on their suggestion forum your account will be banned. If you say ANYTHING even slightly criticizing them on that forum your ENTIRE account will be banned. And if you paid money? Too bad, so sad, you voicing your opinions apparently means you're no longer entitled to the money you spent.

Not to mention the fact that if you don't give in at first and don't pay them to create a group, a few days later they'll send you a 50% off coupon. You have to be a pretty disgusting company to run your business like that. Trick people into paying full price but offer the reluctant ones HALF OFF. I mean, wow.

Aside from the unethical business practices the membership base itself if FULL of fake profiles. 90% of your members won't attend a meetup, won't respond to messages, aren't active in any way, and have stock photos on their profiles. Digging a it deeper you'll be hard pressed to find any of them are real.

AVOID THIS SCAM SITE AT ALL COSTS!

Meetup Absolutely terrible customer service

Terrible experience. Order a dog collar. 3 weeks later I emailed them asking where it was and they stated it was back ordered for 6 weeks but they would upgrade the shipping. 7 weeks later I emailed them again (as they cannot proactively let their customers know if something is delayed). They did not respond. Ultimately, I called and finally got ahold of someone and just had them cancel the order. In total, I emailed them probably 5 times (only got a response twice) and called twice (left a message and they never responded), My recommendation is to avoid this website at all costs. Absolutely terrible customer service!

Meetup - I quit because I could no longer deal with the psycho, creepy, and just plain crazy people that would come to my events

I was an organizer for hundreds of meetup events. I quit because I could no longer deal with the psycho, creepy, and just plain crazy people that would come to my events. After all of the work that I did... I agree with other former organizers on meetup.com that meetup is definitely for losers who do not have the social skills to make friends in real life.

Meetup People lie in their profiles, post pictures of cartoon characters or when they were 20 years younger and so forth

This is a great site by which to find social events and activities, but the good thing about meetup is also the bad thing: Anyone and everyone can join any meetup group. The people lie in their profiles, post pictures of cartoon characters or when they were 20 years younger and so forth. The groups get huge turnout when they are first announced and then after that, no one is interested and attendance fades to nothing after 2-3 meetings.

If you charge for workshops, even fewer people will come, and everyone is out for themselves from their own farming angle: if you go to a singles group rest assured the organizer has a singles company or website business, and so on.

Also, if you want to organize a meetup group, the fees are fairly expensive considering that most groups lose 90 percent of their turnout after the first two meetings or so.

So...there are pros and cons, and they're huge. Big turnout when your group is announced, only to have turnout drop drastically after one or two meetings as people lose interest and look for the next "new" thing that they can go to for free. The people lie and just click on whatever the "new" group is without reading group descriptions or requirements and meeting places are often expensive to reserve with no-shows a huge issue with meetup.

I've organized close to a hundred meetup groups at this point and feel very ambivalent about the groups, the people, and the company. Meetup has deleted my groups for no apparent reason and without notice, sending automated e-mails when I asked them why (you have to use very vague language in offering descriptions).

So I can take or leave meetup depending on the day of the week and how I feel.

Be very careful which groups you join & scrutinize the intentions of the organizers. In general, the organizers exist to serve their own interests. I have first hand knowledge of one organizer who's created various singles clubs to target the age groups of twenties, thirties, fourties, fifties. He also used fake personas of pretty girls as co-organizers, to...

Meetup It's very disappointing indeed that they have such a large disregard for their customers

While the service that Meetup.com provide is excellent, their Privacy Policy is not. It's hard to believe that an established internet company in this day and age would engage in sending unsolicited emails... but that's exactly what this company does. And they have quite a reputation for it.

Top tip: If you sign up -- Use an email address that you don't check!

It's very disappointing indeed that they have such a large disregard for their customers. You thought Facebook was bad? It's nothing compared to this company!

Meetup - I have major issues with privacy on meetup.com

I too have major issues with privacy on meetup.com. I had set all my account info, groups and photo to private. One day I happened to do google search my name and location and to my horror it returned ALL my meetup.com information, including my groups (which I seriously wanted to stay private). It also showed up the messages sent to me in meetup.com...

Meetup Scam

I have been to only one Meetup meeting. That was at the HobNob Cafe in central Phoenix, AZ. The meetings were held most Wednesday nights. A group of writers combined over coffee and discussed, contributed and generally enjoyed the efforts of others. My reaction? The KKK spirit is alive in well within this Meetup group, and having shared my experience with others, I found that my views are not isolated.

You can, for example, imagine my shock when– in the presence of a large group and a LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER– a Meetup group “leader” (emphasis) shouted my name then said,

“… hide your bong!”
I didn’t know what bong was. My bad! LOL I asked, then discovered that bong is a slang term for marijuana. Don’t misunderstand me, please? I don’t use illegal drugs, smoke or drink alcoholic beverages, but I understand that many people choose to use and I respect their wishes. In that case, during that particular meeting, the hard, undeniable facts are: a law enforcement officer was in the group, the meeting was located in one of the toughest parts of town, and during the evening hours, a person could look out of the window and actually see young toughs hanging on corners. In short, as the single minority male in attendance, I was put on the defensive and I felt that the remark, from a group leader was a personal attack; he intended to single me out and stigmatize me.

Here are the facts. If you are interested in a subject–any subject commercially advertised by Meetups –there are reputable institutions in your area that offer better information. If you decide to use the internet, there are outstanding groups offering a wide range of assistance, as well. Meetup, and my opinon is based on my personal experience, is controlled by local cliques. It’s a poorly organized group; and, it’s signature accomplishment is that the organizers form miniature klans that operate to select out, target and stigmatize those who fail to conform to their particular ethos.

Meetup They send too many unsolicited emails and there is no way to stop them

I like the site in general, but they send too many unsolicited emails and there is NO WAY TO STOP THEM. Believe me, I tried. I deleted all my "Interests" to stop their auto-generated "New Meetup Groups" emails, but that didn't work. So I even deleted my account, thinking SURELY that would stop the emails. But no! I am STILL receiving them. Which really bothers me because that means they still have my personal information in their database. "Privacy invasion, " anyone?

They offer NO CONTACT information for Customer Service. I.e., there IS no customer service. All they offer is an endless list of FAQs. I tried using their suggestion box but even that didn't work. I looked at their blog and message boards and tried commenting to postings from their programmers about "bugs" but couldn't. I am positively livid.

Brian Ruhe has created a new group www.ethos.com/ethosbc/ that I have no interest in subscribing to, now that I received some initial communications from the group.

I have unsubscribed previously twice in February and then lo and behold on March 1 -2016, started to receive correspondence again.

I believe Brian Ruhe is mentally unstable and do not want to directly engage with him.

All I ask, is for Brian to be instructed to quit this harassing behavior and if it continues I ask you block him as a user because he is violating privacy rights of Meet up Members.

Thank you.

I inherited a photographers group from a previous organizer that was running it for the sole purpose of meeting models. He especially went for very young girls. It took a year but he finally resigned as there were 200+ members but nobody would attend due to his perversions. The problem I have is that now some of us are trying to recover the group but before he resigned he and some of his friends posted bad faked group reviews. As the new organizer I thought that I could remove them since they were just done to mess up the group for those of us that want to bring it back. But after days of trying I am told that only the person who wrote a review can remove it. The group started out to be something great but after he became the organizer when the original one moved away almost every member became inactive after just 1 Meetup. I have changed the meetup name and was able to remove his images etc. But I can't remove the phony reviews. They should allow reviews to be deleted by the organizers or at least allow them to be reviewed before they are posted. I'm quite sure that many groups have had someone either disgruntled or perhaps just don't like someone in the group so they deliberately post derogatory reviews.

This is an actual copy of one Meetup groups rules: (edited on 05/05/2013)

Trip Payment Refunds, Exchanges and Transfers
In terms of refunds, CW has a STRICT policy of NO REFUNDS, EXCHANGES OR TRANSFERS unless the trip is cancelled by the CW Organizer and/or Host. This policy will ensure that the CW Organizer and/or Host can reduce their potential and actual losses. In addition, the processing of a refund requires searching through hundreds of transactions to find the transaction for which the member has requested a refund. Please be sure before you make your payment that you can attend or, if you cannot attend, that you can live with not receiving a refund. If $20.00 is a budget breaker for you.. then do not sign up unless you are sure you can attend. Note: If you have cancelled, your payment will insure that the CW Organizer and/or Host will not have to pay for your spot out of thier own pocket and, in some cases, will help subsidize a small portion of CW group activities.

No Transfers (i.e. member to member or non-member) will be honored. No exchanges (i.e. for another trip) will be allowed. The administrative challenges of handling transfers and exchanges is more than your volunteer organizers and hosts are willing to manage.

IF YOU INSIST ON A REFUND, WE MAY PROCESS ONE FOR YOU INCLUDING A MINIMUM ADMINISTRATIVE FEE OF $100.00. YES... THAT MEANS IT IS NOT WORTH IT TO ASK.. WE WILL SEND YOU A BILL. Seriously... if you harass, irritate, annoy, stalk or otherwise get on our nerves about a refund.. we are just going to remove you from the group. It is not worth it and we do not have the time to repeat ourselves over and over again about it.. irritating!

This is a copy of what those fees should cover:
The total trip cost per person includes a proportionate contribution to each of the following:
1. Campsite Overnight Fee (2 nights)
2. Campsite Reservation Fee
3. Processing Fee (PayPal or Amazon Payments)
4. Annual MeetUp Fee (Charged to CW)
5. Carrying Cost (interest for advance purchase by CW Organizer)
6. Host and Assistant Host(s) Parking Fee and Small Trip Discount
and this is a copy of an email I found that was accidentally sent from their discussion group and since has been "deleted" after I called them out on it:
. . . . "One of our attendees is not able to make it to Pigeon Point on Friday night ... and they have already paid. So if you or someone you know is interested in going for "free" (and you or they are not already signed up to go), let me know as soon as possible."

I guess the group's rule of NO REFUNDS, EXCHANGES OR TRANSFERS apply only to paying members. One trip alone will net this group a $350+ cushion for the 6 items after expenses are paid. It's my belief that the organizer and up to 5 co-organizers are enjoying great weekends at our expense?

Overall I like the site but after trying repeatedly to reduce the number of emails that I got from them, I finally deleted my account. They send WAY TOO many emails. I joined four groups and was receiving over a dozen emails a day. After trying to turn all notifications off, I still got 4+ emails a day.

Meetup.com is a scam. Avoid this site DO NOT sign up. You send them friends and family by driving membership to your new group, they proceed to take your money and then don't respond to complaints via email. You are left scratching your head trying to figure out how you could have been fooled into that. Try getting anything done by communicating via their support@meetup.com email. You won't get anything done as they just stop responding if you have valid points. After they have stolen your money in a false, deceiving way they will make references to their terms of service which are chalk full of conflicts and misrepresentations. Read ALL of their so called user forums. You will find a litany of people who have been scammed and irate with no way to fix it. You can do the same thing with a FREE Facebook group or page. Meetup is out to rob people make sure you're not one of them. Tell everyone to stay away, they broadcast your personal interests via Google search too.

Meetup For fools

Not talking about any local meetup group or meetup community. This is about the company and the platform.

They spread propaganda of "community" and "connection." But in reality, they leverage their paying subscribers called "organizers" by having them do all the work, assume all the risks and liabilities of practically running their own little companies, let them drive themselves crazy marketing their groups. This gives the Meetup platform high visibility, which in turn attracts more members many of which try "organizing" (and paying for) their own online groups. The cycle perpetuates. This has been going on for years.

Yet there's no service. The company is poorly run. In fact, there's no management. Their offices in New York is "organically" self-guided by teams where employees pick only what they want to work on. There's no accountability. There's absolutely no customer service. Organizers are neither customers nor employees nor independent contractors. Nobody answers the phone. No online contact. No immediate email reply (usu. 48 hr response by an intern who can't understand English). They censor their forums. They ban organizers from posting criticism. Their platform has always been buggy.

Now they abruptly change everything yet again to what they call "New Meetup" without warning nor instructions. Everybody is even more confused and pissed. They don't beta test anything. They don't listen to organizers who are their paying revenue base. They downright embarrass them. They use them as guinea test pigs. What pompous arrogant disrespect! Oh there's also a systematic diversion to another website called UserVoice to placate angry customers who try to offer suggestions for improvement. It's all an extremely shrewd, sinister and brilliant scheme. Most scams are.

Top management will continue cheering about themselves as a "tool" for "better communities." This is the most egregious twist. Their investors and parent company (eBay) must be proud. Yet the only source of revenue for them is actually the organizers. They continue to sucker their organizers into thinking their preferences matter.

No wonder their site traffic is going down month over month, year over year. While Yelp, Groupon and BigTent traffic keeps increasing. Check out SiteAnalytics at Compete dot com. And they still don't get it. It's just blind arrogance. They know they've got the organizers "by the balls" and they think that's all they need.

Absolute scammers. I was part of a group with a membership fee. The group no longer exists and I'm still getting charged. The phone number they give to contact is useless. The email they give us useless. I submitted several ticket requests online and they were marked "solved" with no actual response. Insane.
