Timeshare scam!
Complaint Rating:
Mayan Resorts Sales Associates tell lies to get you to purchase a timeshare.
Here's my story:
My wife and I visited Mexico last year for the first time. During the trip, we visited a nice (not very common) grocery store. While at the grocery store, we were approached by a very friendly local that offered to help us find some items we needed. While showing us around, he proceeded to ask us if we would be interested in simply touring a new resort in exchange for some free groceries and discount coupons for local activities. I immediately asked if the offer was related to a timeshare. He said no, so we agreed to meet him in the morning at our current resort. On the way over to the Mayan Riviera resort I asked the local one more time if this was a timeshare pitch, again he said no. We arrived at a beautiful resort and expected to simply receive a tour. We were brought into a very large room with hundreds of other suckers. We were greeted by a sales person who bought us breakfast and then brought us back to the large room where he proceeded to pitch us on purchasing a timeshare. I was skeptical early on, but then he proceeded to inform me that the timeshare would appreciate in value and that it was a good source of income because any weeks we didn't use could be rented for an annual profit. Sounded great!!! They initially tried to get us to purchase a $60,000 timeshare and one of his associates was very rude and wanted to know why we couldn't afford it. We settled on an entry level timeshare for $6,400. We purchased under false information and were given a complimentary trip to a water park.
When we returned home, I proceeded to advertise with an online timeshare company to see if I could find interest from somebody wanting to rent. It's been a year and no interest. I became frustrated and decided to try and sell the timeshare. Again, no interest and it's been over a year. The price has even been dropped to a fraction of what we purchased it for. I thought I would go ahead and donate the timeshare, but found out that a clause in the contract called for a $2,000 transfer fee. I'M STUCK WITH THIS SUCKER PURCHASE. To make matters worse, I still have to pay an annual maintenance fee. WHAT A DEAL!!!
If you're interested in a timeshare purchase, PLEASE go to the many online companies that sell them and purchase for a fraction of the so called retail value. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE MADE. The Mayan Riviera has unethical sales practices and I hope you're reading this BEFORE your trip to Mexico. We will NEVER return to Mexico because of this purchase and the fact that we got very ill the day after the purchase. I don't think Mexico has a health department. It took my wife six months to recover fully.
