Company information:

I recently signed a contract with a company in your state called Master plans. The company defrauded me of $3850 to draft a business plan. The condition of their delivery was that I had to pay $1925 at the time of sign up and remaining $1925 before the delivery of their first draft. Basically, I ended up paying 100% prior to seeing my product.

I waited for their first draft delivery – which was of extremely poor quality. It was missing any and all valuations information. So, I sent them an email asking them to provide me that information.

On that night I started reviewing all the documents that they had provided to me. I realized that they had made some significant errors in calculating and they were showing my company profits to be above 90%.

I showed that to them and asked them that this was not correct. I sent them a different sheet, which they merely copied into their plan and sent it back to me and showed me that their review 1 was done.

The valuations were still incorrect. After talking with them, it was clear that they had absolutely NO idea about valuations. Their assumptions were completely incorrect, their valuations were totally wrong.

I then worked over 16 hours and worked out a valuations table based on VC requirements. They still did not do anything and showed me their own version of valuation table that was nothing but expected rate of return for investors. At that point, I still had multiple issues with their CF statement, their P&L statement – Their first year P&L statement showed that my first year revenues increased almost by 300% but the expenses remained same throughout the year. So then I set down again and worked out 5 year monthly P&L statements and assumption tables and I sent it to them. I asked them to review my numbers and challenge me but all they did was copied that numbers and returned back to me. This time they added a column for valuations. Obviously, incorrect one. Per their table, my projected revenue for year 5 is over 10, 000, 000 dollars. However, their projected valuation for the company for year 5 is 8+ million dollars.

From this experience, I know for sure that these guys have no idea about finance. I even doubt that the person who is modeling the numbers has finance or accounting degree – even less - an MBA as they claim to have.

This is just finance sections. The strategy sections were basically copied, cut and pasted. If you like, I can show it to you. It's poor quality at its best.

We have had some heated exchanges and they have told me that there's absolutely nothing that I can do at this point in time.

Not only that, the person I was talking to, Christian, told me point blank that even suing is not going to work as they have made me sign the contract that requires me to pay for their attorney fees and they will absolutely hire the most expensive attorneys and by the time I get done, I will be owning them more than $15000 dollar. The guy asked me to try it.

I just think that this is absolutely bad. Their work was really poor. They are robbing me under the contract and now they are challenging that I cannot do anything.

I used to work for this company but quit after seeing this type of thing happen over and over to customers. No one working on business plans has a Masters degree, and few have more than several years actual work experience. The contract is written to convince people that they will see their draft before the second payment. In fact, as quoted by Christian, "MasterPlans works on a performance based agreement. We break it into 2 payments; a 50% retainer to begin and the remaining 50% upon draft delivery." The phrase 'upon delivery' actually means, you pay full upfront, and then we deliver a poorly crafted document. They have a clean BBB record because they refund all clients who go this route. As far as I know, Masterplans lies to each client. It's the classic bait-and-switch tactic.

I very strongly agree with both of above comments. Masterplans is absolutely terrible company. After complaining to BBB and DA's office - they did return all my money. I think this company should be stopped as many people don't know finance and accounting very well and this people can rip them off.

I can't even begin to state how week thier financial plans are. I showed it to my accountant and he said that the person who wrote the plan does not even know Accounting 101.

This company was hopeless. They do charge 100% upfront and they do use templates for the plan. If you ask anything different than the template - you are in for disappointment.

Someone should sue master plans. As a former employee I would be willing to testify that this company has defrauded hundreds of clients of millions of dollars. There must be some way to stop this kind of unethical and illegal behavior. After reading the stories on this page I am actually embarrassed of my own unwitting complicity. I am sorry to everyone who has had a bad experience with master plans. Please contact me if you have any questions or require any information. I believe there should be some kind of business plan review process that informs business people of the consequences of buying a business plan with master plans. There are things I know about master plans that can't be mentioned on the web. Their lies are so thick that it can't even be mentioned in public. Everything, and i mean everything, is a lie, from the website to the promises made by the sales people. Take absolute caution when dealing with this business. They will make you feel like a millionaire during the sales call (believe me i know) and leave you a poor entrepreneur when the process is done. Please be carefule.

OMG! I cannot believe this and WISH I would have found this post prior to spending over $1800 with this company.

I knew that my plan was shitty! I took it to be reviewed and found that the number and percentages were totally wrong and disputed the charges with my bank. My bank sided with the company at first because Masterplans.com sent them all of the "emails and other conversations between us" but has since redisputed my complaint after I submitted a complaint to the Attorney General's office and the BBB. I have not heard from Masterplans.com yet regarding the second dispute but I am hoping it will go my way. I am also planning on sending a copy of this column to my bank and to the BBB and the Attorney General's office and hopefully recouperate my funds!

I just wanted to update my situation with Masterplans. After more communication with the company founder, Bryan Howe, I don't believe this company is in any way fraudulent or deceptive, but rather my engagement with them was a singular break down in their process and not the norm. In the end, they did right by me and I'm happy.

David, I'm sorry they found a way to mitigate your situation. You see, that's what they do. They wait until the last minute to resolve problems like yours so that they can avoid negative feedback, a poor BBB rating and all of these complaints people write on the web. The rest of the people like you are either too lazy or too intimidated to post comments or pursue the BBB and are basically left with a poorly written document and a credit card bill they don't want to pay. Believe me, there are hundreds of people who feel helpless and defrauded. They tried to mitigate me too, but I won't have it. There's no amount of money that can stop me from telling the truth.

"Whistleblower", please make up your mind. You state on this board of a willingness to testify against MasterPlans, but you tell me privately in an email that you are not willing because you fear the owners of MasterPlans. I do understand, in a way, but you cannot ever take something back that you say, especially that which you pen.

Dear Masterplansscam,

I feel it is in my ethical code to say that you have underestimated the reparations owed to those who have contracted masterplans. They should not only compensate all the fees stolen from past clients but also pay those clients for the time and money wasted during dialog and correspondence with this fraudulent company. It is my hope that no further fraud is committed and that clients view this company with the utmost caution.
