Magic Jack does not have a customer service rep when you call, they try to force you to order on their hotline. They tell you it works with DSL, sure, it does, but you still need your phone service to use your DSL, therefore, you still have two bills. one for their product and one for your dsl. If you have a cable modem, then you may want to get it, but if you google: Magic Jack complaints, you may want to think twice, because the internet is full of complaints from them. Which is how I found this site. BUYER BEWARE!

"They have NON-EXISTENT customer service."
Their customer service live chat people are arrogant...they keep on saying they have zero technical problems and if there is any issue it's always user error. They said they only have customer issues every few months. They didn't give me the phone number I selected when I registered and it was too bad for me, I would have to pay to change it. I started the support chat within minutes of registering, to nip the problem in the bud right away. They said they had never had a complaint ever like mine. I work with clients all the time and have to deliver a high level of customer service. I should stop expecting to get good service from anyone ever. I guess since it's so cheap they nickle and dime you to make money, judging by my tech support live chat and comments I have read from other users, I would say it's company policy. If I treated my clients like they treat you in the chat pseudo support I'd lose my job.

Ok, you do realize MagicJack is NOT a downloadable product. It is a device that is plugged into your USB port and allows you to connect a standard phone into it and make calls over the internet. The fact you talk about it not connecting to your landline makes me think you do not know what magic jack is since no land line is needed, just a broadband internet connection.

411 is supposed to be free. When I called I got a "Verizon" ad and kept getting looped back to the ad. When I went the route of the answer page I got some tech named "Ryan H"(with photo)asking me if I wanted to "pay" $18 or up to $58 to get an answer from him. I thought 411 was so-called free. Iam contacting the FTC and getting a cell!

Well you can give your old MagicJack to a friend or relative so they can use it before it expires. Now get a new MJ for your area code. Make sure you tell everyone that you are changing phone number.

I have magicjack and it works great. Voice clarity is crystal clear, never a single dropped call on a call to a landline (so you can't automatically blame magicjack if a cell call is dropped) and certainly never "wreaked" a computer.

I've had lots of trouble with computer gadgets but Magicjack is one of those that I didn't have issues with.

I didn't know the charge for shipping and handling is $9.95. But if they are going to shoulder the S&H themselves then they might increase the price of their service.

Even if you can not ditch your phone companie (witch i can) but i decided to keep em and still saving a bundle of money just by doing my long distance with the MJ.. As for why i kept my original phone company... Well the number supplied to me by MJ makes it that everyone local would have long distance charges to their phone bill.. Same also applies to my wife when should would call home from her cell phone.. Now that would be the only problem i see with it.. Let's hope they make their phone number range wider for this to not happen..

I'm inclined to agree. My sister had a Magic Jack and EVERY time she would call me or I would call her the call quality was so badI could never understand a word she was saying. It ONLY saves you money folks if it works!

I found a website very helpful with email addresses that hopefully you will get somewhere if you send a group email . Just the first email on the website is no longer valid since the person no longer with them.

BAckground: ATT Elite DSL user. Have newer Tower computer, with Dual N modem and router. Canceled phone service now that ATT provides for DSL service only. I am paying Elite DSL service at $35 monthly because it is bundled with my ATT wireless phone service. In San Jose, Ca ATT starts charging .10 a minute for calls 10 miles and beyond. Go figure. Long Distance costs? Well, we all know...

Analysis: Anyways, first time magicJack user and calls/receptions have been no different than if I was on a landline. I bought a good headset with volume controls and it makes a difference. Plug magicjack and headphone into an AC USB hub, not one on the computer. Friends have been pleasantly surprised by the clearness of the voice calls. (ATT sure tried like heck to get me to keep the landline service.) If the computer is off, phone service is off, but calls will go to voicemail. Not a problem, magicjack generates an email with the voice attachment and it is forwarded to my Iphone. Click on the attachement and listen to the voicemail, no problem. Save it, delete or forward it. Tech support is in chat form. So far, faster than the using a phone with endless voice prompts and messages...I have 4 phones through out the house on a wireless set up. Caller Id, and all. Calls are easily made and received just like the hardline setup. I recognize that I have ADSL service only. ATT does not surcharge voip call service. So people should relax on that. I agree with the opinion that one should look at their computer set up, modem/router and speed of their ADSL. Collectively, the newer, faster and cleaner setup should make a difference. Sure does for me...Best of luck everyone.

Call me naive but doesn't the use of DSL over the MagicJack presuppose an existing internet connection for the MagicJack to work at all? For it to work, at least to my mind, it would seem that the DSL/MagicJack relationship would be like a dog chasing its tail - you need DSL to use MagicJack but DSL requires MagicJack to operate in the first place. Boggles the mind. Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

When i first recieved my Magic Jack a year ago I did have audio problems on a Windows Vista computer. After downloading the patch from the site and following the suggestions it still did not work well with Vista. I then moved it to another pc in the home running Windows XP and at the same time switched to a corded phone. It now works great and the audio is much improved without the skips. For 20$ a year phone service its a deal.

I ordered one from infomercial and got an automated lady, that took my e-mail address wrong, even though she made me spell it out for her. Well, they took 47.90 out of my account and it is pending. Then I contacted them on the internet and they would not change my e-mail to the correct one. so I called the bank and they gave me a phone number but I got another automated person who then gave me another phone number to call and they kept me on hold for an hour and 15 minutes and nobody ever did answer the phone. So, I got back on the live chat with them and then they charged me another 23.90 and it is pending, so I can't get my money back and I still do not have a magic jak or a conformation e-mail. They are rude and extremely stupid on the chat line. If I don't hear from them soon or get the magik jak soon, I am making a complaint with the BBB and getting a lawyer. They need to be sued big time, what a ripoff and if it does come I am going to send it back right away if I can get a return number from them and then they said if I send it back, I might have to wait for two billing cycles to get the money back in my account. My bank only sends me a statment once a month, so are they talking about I have to wait to months to get a refund or what is a billing cycle. I am not putting that thing in my computer and getting spyware I wouldn't care if they paid me to take it. I got just one word for them IDIOTS and scam artists.

Sorry Ktoot, but it appears it won't end OK. As you can see from other experiences (above), you're basically screwed. Buy if it's any compensation, had you actually been able to get the dumb thing to work, it wouldn't be working for very long, and while it did work you'd have the ### hit & miss phone system in Montana.

Been using magic jack for over one year now. Works great for me.
One of my pioneer dsl customers had no luck with it so she gave it to me and now my daughter enjoys magic jack calls also. We have ATT DSL service and it works great.
Thanks ATT and Magic Jack.

This technology is not ready for prime time. I have had two units fail within 2 months of operation and the only answer service could give was to buy another unit.

Try a different usb port and make sure you're not running any applications in the background like limewire or anything that will use up your bandwidth...I had a similar problem and shutting down any unnecessary applications seemed to do the trick.

Well, it happens every five minutes on even the major websites like Google and Microsoft Live, and gets passed over for common error but when you are using a phone or any other type of sensitive communications device through the internet on someones connection to an account and it interferes with the service that in my opinion is a darn big interference.

yes this is true for those living in my area as well. I understand completely what you are saying. They are not saying they expected their dsl to be free dumb ###. what they are telling you is that they cant cancel their phone service and replace it with magic jack. They have to still pay for a phone line to get the DSL in the first place. So if you are going to already be paying for a home phone line, then there is no point to pay for magic jack as well. This was the case with me as well. I thought i could replace my current phone service with magic jack to save money, but turns out magic jack wont work with my DSL because when I cancelled out my phone service my DSL would no longer work therefore making magic jack not work either. In my area there is only one DSL company to chose from and they require you to have both the phone line and the dsl. They wont let you have either or.So for those of us in this predicament magic jack will not work for us. I guess it depends on where you live.

I dont have DSL so I wont comment on that. I have broadband (through comcast) I have had magicjack for quite some time now and I have NEVER had 1 single problem with it. I even use a wireless connection and a wireless phone and it works flawlessly. Magic Jack is not a scam and dont forget you paying $20 per yr for this service that comes to about 41 cents PER WEEK. Going into this I thought even if it only works part time or has some dropped calls I always remember that you get what you pay for and for 41 cents per week magic jack is great.

This company is a joke!

I was just in a chat session for 30 minutes with NO resolution what so ever! I was trying to order the magic jack and it kept saying my cc was declined. Well, I checked my bank account and there are four different pending transactions for $2 which PROVED my card is NOT declined through my bank.

I could not call Magic Jack b/c there was no c/s number listed so I click on the 24 hour chat. I talk first to one rep. that ends up saying she can't help me so I have to be tranf. to a higher up. That person was just as useless! They were asking me for my order number!

Hello! Didn't I say I couldn't place the order b/c my card was DENIED by Magic Jack? They do NOT listen (or read, I should say) since they would not answer my questions or respond to my statements and then they would ask me or say something that was already addressed. I've decided to not even bother with this company.

If I'm having problems BEFORE even getting the product, I'll consider it a sign to not even bother with them. I would suggest other people steer clear of them as well since I've heard nothing but horror stories about this company now that I"m looking them up. Bad Business.

I have been on their "customer service" chat 6 times with the same problem. I purchased 2 Magic Jacks at the same time. One works great, the other keeps resetting itself over and over. Have put the problem unit on two different computers and the results are the same. The other good unit will work flawlessly on the same two computers. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that the problem unit is broken. Can not get any help replacing the defective unit.

Very, very poor service after the sale.

I must admit I was excited on getting this product but when I ran into problems getting it to work. I spent hours on the chat as well with several representatives who then informed me to purchase a new ge phone. I spent money on a new phone and the product still didnt work. I explained this to the representative for hours on a chat. The problem was never resolved. I could never reach a supervisor nor speak to one on the phone. I rather pay my regular voip company (Lingo) 21.99 a month and actually get a live person who cares to resolve my issues as soon as possible. You get what you pay for.

Unfortunately, my phone company, through which I get DSL service, will not provide me with only DSL. I have to have basic phone service as well; at least a $50 per month charge, plus the cost of the DSL. So I cannot, as the infomercial for Magic Jack states, "fire" my phone company! Some phone companies, I understand, will allow customers to pay for only DSL, but I haven't found one yet. It would be great if Magic Jack made it clear that this is not often an option, and that their product will not save money for those in my situation. The informercial says nothing about the potential problem, and I have yet to find anything about it on their website. I understand the issue...just don't understand why it isn't made clear, and I wonder how many Magic Jacks are needlessly ordered by people in my situation.
