Lumpy Bikes proprietor Charles Gregory (business location 79 Morrow St. Peterborough, ON K9J 1X3 [protected]) sold a bike he knew was critically faulty.
Mr. Gregory would only accept a cash sale and did not provide any receipt or any information about his company's warranty or repair policy, only a verbal "I stand behind my bikes".

However, when the faults became apparent shortly the purchase and he has contacted for a remedy, Mr. Gregory became aggressive and verbally abusive and refused to rectify the situation. Mr. Gregory relied on the the "policy" of his operation to justify refusal to rectify the situation but, as noted above, did not have any written policy nor was any policy provided with the sale.

This has left me, the consumer, with a faulty bike, having to bear the expense of repair, if indeed it can be repaired.

All and all a very shady and dishonest business.

I find it difficult to imagine that there is any legitimacy in the complaint.
All of my dealing with Charles have been good ones. Honest and fair.

The problem though when people vent a complaint publicly is that those that have not had dealings with a business may just believe them.

It is best to go see Charles yourself and you will see the person filing the complaint was just having a bad day.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Charlie and his wife and have no problem endorsing him as being an upstanding, and honest business operator.
To suggest that he intentially sold a defective product is ridiculous. He's just not that kind of person.
I hope that the Brown family and Charlie can put this horrible altercation behind them soon. Life is too short to waste on such hurtfull pursuits.

the truth remains that the complaintant ken brown of bolivar street peterborough, called us at six thirty on a friday night demanding I come pick the bike up immediately, when I told him I had drank my beers for the day he became irate, he did not ask me to repair the bike, however he insisted on a full refund. this is not our policy. Brown continues to post lies on the internet about our shop. Brown used the bible to intimidate me, saying, "I have judged Charlie Gregory incorrectly over the years" He ranted on about helping old Fred Maybee as I had taken up Freds cause. Brown was even hired as the violinist at the wake of one of my deceased brothers which shows what a close relationship we had that has become mired because of a few rubles.I really do forgive Brown for his indiscretions, his unmanageable anger and repeat for all to hear, we will fix that bike if it is brought to us or we will replace that bike with one of similar vintage and quality, we have sold thousands of bikes over the years, our reputation is near flawless. I can't fathom this herculean effort on Browns part to discredit us...we pray for him and do forgive.

Charlie Gregory was a compulsive liar. This "standard policy" is something Charlie pulls out of his ### as he goes (which is why it's so easy to "stand behind"), surely he can provide record of the existence of this standard policy prior to this posting of this complaint. Maybe the roof does leak at 501 Bolivar, I can't say I've looked seeing as my family has never lived there, and my father certainly doesn't live there currently, city records will confirm this. City records will also confirm that my father does not own any property downtown, he owns 1 well maintained triplex outside of the downtown which can be viewed here if you are interested in renting http://www.ptborentals.ca/photos/457/ . Surely if these "poorly kept houses he rents throughout the downtown area" exist, Charlie can demonstrate this? Most children leave home by the time they are young adults, it is interesting to call this "leaving [your father] to grovel". "Kellerman" is a non existent doctor, the name Charlie is failing to remember is Robert Kamermans who owned a clinic in Coe Hill, form your own opinion on his http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/how-one-doctor-made-500000-as-canadas-top-medical-marijuana-provider-until-police-came-knocking . Obviously the comments about growing illegal substances are completely slander, and again I issue the same challenge to Charlie, can you prove this? Can you prove any of YOUR slanderous accusations?

501 Bolivar does not belong to my family and never has.
My dad does not rent any property in the downtown.
Kids leaving home is normal, this is not a family leaving a man to wallow in a hole.
And Dr.Kellerman doesn't exist.

Is this the kind of guy you want working on your bike? Someone who can remember addresses or names and lies compulsively to defame his detractors?

The fact that this thread even exists, should make you question Charlie Gregory's business, and personal character.

The bike purchased was for me, It was faulty, broke down after a few days, not in need of a "tune up" as Charlie euphamizes. This overly amicable "I did nothing wrong" attitude is 100% what you will get if you buy a faulty bike from this guy and bring it to his attention. The crankset blew out of the bike after a day of light use. We are talking about a cruiser here, a bike that hasn't been taken off a curb let alone threw a trail or any kind of terrain. This is 100% the result of lazy work. But hey accidents happen, so we gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked for repair or refund at which point Charlie did nothing but cuss, and refuse to repair the bike on grounds of his drunken stupor (told us he's 4 beers deep when we called). Unprofessional, not worth supporting. Buy your bikes at Wildrock, the crew is great, the bikes are better quality, or buy online direct from distributor, or go to Fontaine's or Spokes & Pedals (less selection than Wild Rock but solid repair jobs). Always thought Charlie was a decent guy, but seeing the way he has treated my father (the OP) my whole family is appalled.

Wow! What planet is this dude from? My wife, myself and our four children all ride Lumpy Bikes bicycles. Every one of us are all satisfied customers and all the referrals for friends we have sent over are all quite complimentary about this friendly neighborhood service. In reality, even brand new bikes from established downtown bike bike shops virtually all need fine tuning after riding them for awhile. Yes I have needed a little warranty tuneup on one of my bikes, wish I could do it myself but I have two left hands so to say and it's been done on the spot with a smile, friendly chatter, a story, a tour of vintage memorabilia and some cute artistic displays around the shop, (Don't eat the Liquorice. LOL) while my children enjoyed a free Popsicle and played with Buddy.

I have donated bikes that my children have outgrown, ones neighbors would like to dispose of, that are too good to throw into a dumpster and don't know what to do with them. Why? Because Lumpy Bikes fixes them up and gives away (Yes Free! With Locks!) to the less fortunate Street People of Peterborough. Look at the Kijiji adds of all the smiling faces of people who just need that little extra boost of confidence that somebody cares, to get them around town. I think it's about 80 bikes a year get donated, locally. Yes drop off your extra bike to his shop that you would like to see someone get lots of miles and smiles out of...who is in need. That somebody in Canada will benefit from, rather than half way around the world. And yes he does fix their bikes when they break down as all bikes, cars, autos and even people do.

Complaints? Probably like anywhere. Like any business. Some ignorant arrogant SOB waltzes in doesn't want to pay for quality or is trying to swindle something for free, thinks the customer is always right attitude, They think some one will listen to them, they know more than the experienced mechanic does and are just too impotant to self realize they are on a Trojan Horse that just went off the short end off a long pier. Hey Bud! I listened and I disagree!. I know because in my business these type of people are a dime a dozen, every day, 10 times a day and some of the time they work for a competitor to get a better deal. They are trying to start their own bike buisness Or? They "Musta Notta Gotta Lotta Last Night" type and are looking for some little guy to blow their load on. Who knows? Who Cares? Personally I have told ignorant arrogant people that I don't need their business that bad to listen to verbally abusive uneducated comments.

This guy amazes me at how un-insightful he is towards this friendly neighborhood shop.

Cheers Wilbur. Keep up the friendly good work in our community..
