Failed to deliver the standard of training advertised
Complaint Rating:
Company information: The London Hair Academy Midford Place, 114-115 Tottenham Court Road Greater London, England United Kingdom Phone: 0207 096 5011 thelondonhairacademy.com
I took out a substantial loan at the beginning of these courses after being made redundant; because of all of this I have been unable to become self-employed and start my business. My health has suffered because of the lack of professionlism or process regarding my complaint and refusing to acknowlegde and resolve this issue in a satisfactory way for either party. I am now working part-time to try and repay my loan.
The whole venue is a nightmare when you eventually reach the top of the stairs. All surface and no substance. The only W.C. access is through the beauty training room and no designated office or kitchen space. I really do not know how they have got it all passed with risk assessments. The hair basin/seating unit was not attached to the floor or wall and when anyone sat in it they experience a whiplash effect and fell out rather than got out; it was a health & safety nightmare. We were using dirty towels on and off all week and having to rummage in the bins to find those. Waste bins overflowed with hair and food waste and rubbish. There were only 2 cutting combs and one had half the teeth missing and very cheap scissors. Hairdryers that the nozzles did not fit and we had to fix them on with loo roll and masking tape. I would have expected to be presented with at least one new head block to work on and produce 5 standard cuts on during the week. This was not to be. There were only 2 of us enrolled for the week and we were expected to use old heads full of very bad hair extensions and complete with various hair cuts. When models came in I was embarrassed to have to use dirty gowns and towels. It was professionally demoralising having experienced an excellent standard of training in the past.
If you or your employer have got lots of money to waste and don't care if you pass (because you will anyway!) or not then enroll on this course! I was embarking on various courses with LHA after being taken in by the content & claims of their website regarding their training provider status and facilities. I wanted to refresh my skills and become a mobile hairdresser and needed a package of courses to enable me to have the confidence to become self-employed and start operating professionally again. I arrived on the first day to find what I had expected to be a colour course had been changed to a 5 day cutting course but the first day had become a blow-dry course and a ghd course and the cutting did not start until 3.30pm. Unfortunately this set the standard for the rest of the week. We had a different tutor on day 2 - Drew. He was fab and a total professional and if you live in London and can track him down I would suggest you do. He should be running his own academy because his standard should be the norm if you are paying LHA prices £1, 495 a week. At the end of the week I was asked if I felt stretched and challenged by the the week. Yes I was but not for the right reasons. I had experienced a standard of training that I wish I had not and if this was to be the same for the colouring, hair extensions and barbering courses that I had booked too then I wanted my money back. I later went on a SAKS week's cutting course and it was true professionalism from start to finish and cost £990 and that included 1 day barbering and 3 new head blocks to work on and bring home. You only passed if you met a certain standard and received a full report at the end of the week with professional guidance for improvement. I am now £4000 out of pocket and have tried to get my money refunded amicably by Claire Mitchell who ignored all my efforts to communicate with her directly I am going through the small claims court and have lodged another complaint with Camden Trading Standards Office and Westminster Health & Safety Executive and alerted Habia to the practices of the London Hair Academy. Donot part with any cash before you visit the premises or speak to someone who has been on one of these courses. They are reluctant to produce invoices for anything and 'cash' seems to be the preferred method of payment!

| I agree with the above comment totally. I have unfortunately just been on a cutting and colour course. They do not deliver what is on there website. They also ripped me off by cashing a cheque for £2000 when I told them not to. The cheque took over a week to arrive due to postal strike so Claire Mitchell demanded payment by another way. I paid through the bank but in the meantime the cheque arrived and she cashed it without my permission and did not tell me. I have been trying to get the money back for 6 weeks. I am now taking them to court. DO NOT book any courses with LHA. Claire Mitchell will only lie to get you on the course and then you never hear from her unless she is chasing you for money!! Very bad experience and I want all my money back. |

I could not agree with you more. I would advise any one interested in taking this course to think again and not part with any of your cash!
I would be interested in getting in contact with you both, it might be beneficial to our cases, let me know how that might be possible. |

I agree with all three of you. The whole experience was dreadful. Totally unprofessional. Severe lack of models. Lack of clean towels. Lack of products to use, very little hair tint. Ran out of tint whilst colouring a clients hair, had to wait 25 minutes for the receptionist to go to collect some more. Had to water down A 12%peroxide to get the correct strength of 6% needed as there was not any 6%. This is a very basis neccessity to colouring. Poor selection of styling and finishing products. On my last day after cutting a textured style on a young man I needed to finish it with either a wax or moulding paste. My tutor and I had to explain that we did not have any. The only products available was Boots hair spray, a heat protecter or a detangler. They didn't invest in a range of proper salon products. I.e Bed Head. Aveda, Sebastian, Redkin. This affects training as you need to these different products to acheive the desired results. Walk into any reputable salon and ask them if they would buy boots hair spray and if they carry more than three products.
The head blocks to practice on were chopped into and therefore was difficult trying to learn a bob when the block had been already cut into a cropped hairstyle. We were supposed to get hand outs but because the tutor whad been paying to photocopy ithe information himself and London Hair Academy failed to reimburse him for it we didnt get the handouts.
I was told lunch was provided with the cost of my course but 3 weeks into my course this stopped. No one spoke to me about this and when I asked where my lunch was I was told that they had decided not to provide this anymore.
I did the 6 week fast track course and I can not competently cut and colour hair like I was told I would be able to within salon specified time and therefore am not employable by a salon.
Do not undertake any course, hair or make up with The London Hair Academy. They just take your money and fail to deliver.
The tutor Drew was really nice and did the best in the situation.
The web site is a complete lie. Claire Mitchell lies to you all the time and does not return phone calls or emails.
I am taking them to court. I want a refund. I would also like to contact the above students that have complained. |

| Everyone who has had these bad experiences with LHA and Claire Mitchell should complain to Trading Standards. The more people that complain will make a better case for Trading Standards to investigate them. Claire Mitchell should not get away with ripping anyone else off!! |

Hi Everyone
Just to let you know where I am at legally with the London Hair & Beauty Academy.
Through Money Claim on-line a judgement was issued against them and they ignored. This ended in the bailiffs’ trying to recover my training costs which was unsuccessful. I am now at the Fast Track pre-court hearing stage where I have to prove that I am doing everything in my power to resolve this amicably without further litigation. I will add I have been doing this since July 2009. This means I and Claire Mitchell and Ridma Perera the other director have to follow and adhere to a series of formal legal protocols this includes The London Hair Academy formally responding to all documentation that I have sent by recorded delivery to Tottenham Court Road, Preston Road and both their home addresses within 7 days which they have not. They now have until 29th December 2009 to refund my training costs plus interest at 8% which is £5000 and this I have asked to be paid directly into my bank account because I will not accept this any other way. This is unlikely to happen if previous non-communication on their part is anything to go by. I tried to contact Claire last week and left a message on her answerphone saying that I was not about to let the matter rest.
On the 30th December I will move it to the next stage and submit all documentation to the Judge who will then allocate the appropriate course for my case. At this point it will have cost me £400. I need to submit dates that both parties cannot attend court. Unfortunately Claire has chosen to ignore this request to. If she or Ridma do not attend the Judge will decide without them present. My claim will also include a refund of my training costs, loss of projected earnings and business set up costs a total of £16, 000. All this was built on the basis that the London Hair Academy would provide the necessary training over a period of courses that would enable me to start my own business. This they failed to do and I base my claim on the Consumer Act of 1974 and their failure to deliver the goods advertised and act in a reasonable and fair way.
Because of all this I cannot share any documentation with you because if I do I cannot submit it to court without The London Hair Academy agreeing for me to do so; but with your agreement I will put a copy of your complaints posted here in with my documents for the Judge.
Personally my health is a mess because of all of the stress of the past 7 months. I am in £12k debt because I could not start my business and have had to take a totally unrelated job to pay off my loan. The time that I have spent pursuing Claire Mitchell has become a part-time job! I will do everything in my power to stop anyone else ending up in my situation.
I do have a couple of ideas that I will share with you via personal email. Dorset/Camden Trading Standards, Westminster H&S Exec, HMRC and Learning & Skills council are all aware of their activities. SAKS are well aware that they have copied and pasted text from their website. I was taken in by the whole professional image that the website gave.
So I paste this update as a warning. I tried to post something on the website Hotcourses but they would not publish it and BABTAC have not acknowledged my complaint either which I felt was disappointing. That is why it is so difficult to find negatives about any of these training schools because those that should be giving advice do not!

| Hi all was just wondering if any of you have had anything resolved or received compensation from this disastrous company. after many chances for them to give me my money back or the equipment i have paid for ive decided to take it to court, they are a disgusting excuse for a training academy and if anyone is interested in making statements i am contacting bbc watchdog regarding this matter. the more people sharing their story the more likely they will be to name and sham this awful company. |

Hi my name is Linh
I recently put down a deposit for LHA, and now your comment has made me very concerned,
I dont know weather I should continue or not becuase the course is in april,

Please, please do not go ahead with this training go to SAKs (I had a fab week there for £990 on their Simply Saks cutting and barbering week) or another credible training provider. Over the years I had already received training from Wella, Andrew Collinge etc and achieved my City & Guilds and I can assure you I could provide you with better facilities and product knowledge having been out of the trade for some years than you will receive from the London Hair Academy. Other students and tutors have emailed me personally with their stories of the total unprofessionalism of Claire Mitchell. Just look upon the loss of a deposit as a hard lesson learnt would be my advice.
The only time Claire Mitchell parts with cash is to set aside a court hearing! I know this because this has happened on Monday. I doubt even that she will show
Good luck with your career |
