Life Time Fitness 30 day cancellation fee

I signed up back in January of 2011 and at the time was told during the "pitch" that it was no problem closing the account at anytime in the future. They really stress no contract! After checking other fitness centers I decided paying 75 bucks a month was rediculious and when the May payment was taken out of my checking account, promptly went in and cancelled the membership. The gal at the desk told me they couldnt refund the may payment because of the 30 day cancel policy. Which is a scam since they are a business that is selling the use of equiptment and it shouldnt need 30 days to cancel your membership! just cancel it and delete my member number from the computer! well, I left and resigned the fact that I wasnt getting my 75 bucks back. When june came around, I was astonished to see another payment taken out! I called the corp office and was informed since I cancelled on May 3rd, (the first business day of May) and June 1st was not 30 days, I had to pay another month! I would tell anyone to stay away from this cold hearted in it for the money only company! They will never get me back as a member!

These people are ridiculous. I will start by saying this, when I signed up with Lifetime Fitness I had every intention on staying with their gym, but sometimes people have emergencies and can not continue.
I had to leave an abusive/violent relationship in the middle of my membership. I called the Lifetime office and spoke with a gentleman, told him all about what had happened. He told me not to worry about it that he will cancel my membership. I had to go into hiding immediatly, did not have time to write a cancellation notice and run it up there. I left with all of my children. About 4 months later I started receiving phone calls from Jackie in their corporate office. Telling me that I owed them $300. I emailed their corporate office telling them of my situation. I received a phone call from the Austin office, a lady named Tara. She told me that I just had to provide court documents and a cancellation notice and she will waive my fees. I was able to go into the gym and provide all of my paperwork and she told me she would put me on a flex account, $10 a month, for only one month and waive the past due amount and then my membership will be canceled. I thanked her for her help and that I was so grateful. Two days later I received a phone call from Jackie, corporate, saying that I have to leave my credit card number in order for them to waive those fees. I told her that I had to close all of my accounts with my ex. She did not care, she wanted my credit card number. I told her no, i dont have one. I called Tara from the Austin office and Tara told me that there is nothing they can do, that she is going to re apply the past due amount unless I decide to stay with the gym. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! They are heartless and cruel!

Life Time Fitness hot tub rash

I got Pseudomonas Folliculitis...also known as Hot Tub Rash from the hot tub at this club. It is a nasty pimply and irritating rash all over my back, chest, abdomen, arms and thighs. This is a serious staph infection. Management seems unconcerned and not willing to take any responsibility. Beware of hot tubs. They are disgusting bacteria germ infested places...esp the ones in Parker at Lifetime.

Life Time Fitness I contracted a bacterial infection called hot tub folliculitis

I went into their hot tub. My first hot tub visit in 20 years. Shortly thereafter I started itching. I thought I had an allergic reaction to something so I tried treating as if it were an allergy. Finally after a rash appeared and became painful I went to the Doctor and he immediately identified it as Hot Tub Folliculitis. Which according to the CDC is from poorly kept hot tubs. When I got anyone to respond to my attempts to warn them so others would not get infected from the tub --- -their answer was we check the hot tub every 2 hours. I was in the pool area for 3 and not a single employee took a water sample. I spoke to an employee and he seemed shocked that they said it is checked every 2 hours. Impossible for me to contract it if it is checked that frequently. So, to me, if they are dishonest about that - --- what else are they dishonest about keeping up with.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002431/

For two weeks my calls and emails went without response. Then the legal department gets involved and of coarse complete denial.

Where is the "I am so sorry this has happened"----"Where is the Customer Service Skills". One lady I left three messages for when she called I told her that the person I FINALLY spoke to yesterday said she already spoke to me. I confronted her and said are you claiming we have spoke ---- she said "I thought we did". I laughed and said there is no way. What happened was I left you three messages and the last one stating how rude it is for you to not call me.

I can be itching for a MONTH, Horrible horrible itching and be left with scars. What did I get. the pleasure of getting more and more pissed off from being ignored.

BEWARE of cleanliness. Protect yourself --- do not count on them keeping up with any health standard.

Life Time Fitness membership services

This is a complaint on behalf of myself, but mostly my mom. I am visiting her for the weekend and she had the idea that we could go work out at the local lifetime fitness club, a club she has been a member of for over five years. Upon entering, I had to fill out some paper work and show my license, which was understandable. After this we were told to wait for a guest services representative. After several minutes, another group of members that had guests got to walk in and use the facilities after filling out the paper work. When we asked why, the woman at the front desk told us it was because they were from out of town.

Apparently, since I still have a Minnesota driver's license, it is company policy to try and sell me a membership, even though I only want to use a treadmill for an hour while my mom does yoga. She has run into similar problems when she has brought guests and she had had enough. So she asked to cancel her membership. The membership services representative who was supposed to meet us "right away" came to disparage her to no avail. Finally, while trying to cancel her membership on his computer and telling her she was "wrong" and that I might be interested in a student membership, "Philip" told her that his computer had frozen and he could not cancel the membership.

For being a membership services representative, 'Philip' was able to provide absolutely NO services. But this is only part of the problem. Customers should be treated with respect and graciousness at all times...members should be treated that way ten-fold. My mom has been a member of lifetime fitness for the better part of the decade. This means that she has made a commitment to this company and it is guaranteed payment once a month. Yet she gets treated like dirt when she tries to bring a guest every once and awhile, and when she goes to the salon, the staff constantly up-sells her, often without her knowledge. I understand the company need to try to generate more business, but in doing so they lost a once faithful member, one who will tell every friend and family-member that there are better health clubs out there and a "membership" at life time means little to nothing else then being preyed upon every time you walk through the door.

The entire situation really sounds like an overreaction on your mother's and your part. Unless your mother has a membership solely to bring guests along. But from what you described, they didn't treat you badly at all. They were maybe a little slow, and maybe pushed their sales a little too much, but it just sounds like a typical gym.

Life Time Fitness free pass fraud...

Lifetime Fitness is an upscale ripoff in many ways. First they try to suck you in with all kinds of promotions. But once you are in, it would take a lot of effort to get out...that is if you miss the cutoff date by a month, you will be billed for another month.
In my case, I was offered a free month pass for a guest and my guest used it 3 times. Obviously, free is not synonymous with Lifetime and they wanted her to sign a waiver every time she visit -just to harass her. After she jumped this hoop during her 3 visits, they introduced another hoop -are you a resident of this city? Actually the city they are in are just 6miles by 6miles and a lot of members are outsiders to begin with. There you go, she wasn't and they told us that she can't use this monthly free pass anymore -though she has about 20days left.
However, they would still have the sign "Monthly free membership" just to cheat. In fact, none of these rules were informed to us or was in the fine print.

BEWARE OF ALL THEIR FREE PRODUCTS AND FINE PRINTS, that changes frequently and at whim.

Life Time Fitness money scam

I joined Lifetime Fitness is Dublin, Ohio after my gym (Sawmill Athletic Club) closed for over a year for renovations. Lifetime seems to be a comprehensive gym that offers cardio, weight training machines and free weights, personal training, group classes, 2 pools, sauna, showers, a spa, a decent cafe, and various other features.

I'd been a member here for 3 years. The facility is very nice and large, but after a while I realized that no updates ever take place. They have the same hodgepodge of equipment that they've had since they opened. There is plenty of quality cardio equipment but the weight training machines are breaking down and there aren't enough of them. The free weights areas are way too small and crowded, and are frequently filled with personal trainers.

Immediately upon joining you are given a free "fitness evaluation" which amounts to a high pressure sales tactic to try to enlist you in personal training. This is an area where they make more money, so it's a priority to them to have as many trainers and clients being actively trained as they can. The trainers, of which they are way too many hanging around, are unfriendly, unhelpful, surly, and generally unprofessional. They engage their clients in programs that are "trendy" rather than beneficial, and appear to be too difficult for their clients to keep up with. The clients usually look pretty silly and frustrated trying to do the "latest and greatest" exercises. They also will cordon off an area to work with their clients, and hog 2-3 machines at a time. Some nights it takes 2-3 times as long as it should just waiting on and avoiding the trainers. I do not understand their unfriendly and unhelpful demeanors. If they're trying to enlist clients, shouldn't they try to be approachable? In particular, a tall skinny older trainer there named "John" will definitely give you an annoyed attitude if you interrupt one of his conversations or web surfing when he isn't working with a client. You can't expect help from them at all unless you're paying them.

Overall the place, from reception right on up to general manager, has become rather cocky, as if they feel as if you should be honored to be present in their club. A quality service organization should always make you feel as if THEY are honored to serve you, not the other way around.

My kids really enjoyed the outdoor pool at first, but it's nearly impossible to find a place to sit on the weekends during the summer. They need to double or even triple the patio space around the pool. They have the room, it's just concrete, right?

Although fairly new, the club is not really adequately cleaned. The steam room is pretty revolting, as are the showers, especially on the weekends. The cleaning seems to be mostly concerned with cosmetics, rather than thoroughness.

The overall impression that I have is that they will do anything to sign up new members, no matter how crowded the place is already, but do just enough to keep them. That seems naive and short-sighted to me, as any quality organization will tell you that it's more expensive to attract new clients than to retain existing ones. The gym is too crowded, which is causing dedicated members to leave and be replaced by those who only seek nominal participation in a fitness club. Eventually the casual members leave too because they aren't using it enough, which will lead to membership churn and more overcrowding as the sales team tries furiously to replace those that leave.

I have canceled my membership, as have many of my acquaintances there recently. Many of the members that I speak to there are becoming fed up with many of the things I list here, but mainly the overcrowding, lack of updates to the facility, and the overall churlish and apathetic attitudes of most of their staff.

I may rejoin some day after they have fired their GM and get their trainers out of the way.

Life Time Fitness unauthorized membership charges

A membership was opened last summer for my nanny to enable her to bring my daughters to the pool at Lifetime Fitness. Upon opening the membership for her, the salesman at Lifetime agreed to set up a two-month membership for her that would end prior to her leaving to go back to school. Lifetime continued to charge their student "flex rate" to my credit card each month, and it wasn't until I cancelled my own membership that I realized they were still charging me a monthly fee for my nanny. I notified Lifetime immediately, but the salesperson ignored my emails and the customer service rep would not credit my account. The customer service rep will only cancel my account with a hard copy signature delivered to their center, despite multiple emails indicating that continuation of the membership past July was never authorized by me and despite repeated requests to immediately cancel the account and refund previous charges. The salesperson was willing to promise anything in order to obtain the original membership agreement, and has shown that they will use dishonest techniques to establish accounts but will not even follow through to resolve issues and attempt to deal with dissatisfied customers. I do NOT recommend Lifetime Fitness and caution any consumers to be wary of promises made by "schmoozy" sales reps, read the fine print and watch your credit card statements carefully to validate that you are only being charged what you agreed to.

they took my money out of my account, that i MADE VERY CLEAR to the woman when i signed up I DID NOT WANT ANYTHING TAKEN FROM THIS CARD. i paid cash up front every month(not to mention i made the mistake of joining on the 26th[80$] and was charged again on the first, they never told me that.) so two weeks after signing on to the 60$ a month RIP OFF, i was temporarily laid off for 3 months. i canceled, and had to pay a cancellation fee, on top of my NEXT MONTH as well. so i couldn't pay then and told them that i would make payments, a few weeks later i had filed my tax return and recieved my tax return of 424$ on april 22, 2011 @ 10 am, THREE HOURS LATER, LIFETIME SNUCK INTO MY ACCOUNT THAT THEY KNEW THEY COULDN'T USE AND TOOK THE 160$ OUT OF MY ACCOUNT WITH NO AUTHORIZATION. when i called no one would call me back regarding the situation.

Life Time Fitness rude member service

We were made to quit lifetime fitness because of the unfriendly and disrespectful manner an employee treated us. This happened at Warrenville, IL.

We have been members at Lifetime for more than 4 years in a different state and we recently moved here. We have had good experience at the previous club, so we decided to keep the membership but just downgrade it from family to single. And since we have had member services at the previous club, we know how a member adviser talks to a customer. This particular member adviser at Warrenville office was unhelpful in having us understand about making changes to the membership and did not offer any extra information.

The worst part was the Senior Department head that was brought in to answer our questions, who was very rude to us. While we were still talking, he simply walked away saying "you have a good day, buddy." He simply left! What kind of a customer-oriented business does that? We were simply asking about changing our membership status from family to single and were inquiring why there is a fee to downgrade which we were not aware of from our lifetime fitness club in the previous state and this guy simply walks out. For this kind of treatment, we felt is necessary to rather quit the club rather than having to work out in such an unfriendly place.

Lifetime fitness Warrenville, IL made it most difficult to do business with. They made us basically quit the club, because they did not care to explain the club policies and fee. It seemed like they did not care if we were members or not.

Life Time Fitness - badly run club

I am a previous employee of Lifetime Fitness who recently quit after 2 years of working there. Although I was not in a manager position at the club (I was a lifeguard), I got to observe all of the horrible things going on firsthand at there. When I first started working there, I thought it was great that I got a free membership along with working at the...

Life Time Fitness lifetime bait & switch

Lifetime Fitness offers a "Couples" membership that's an upgrade from a "Single" membership, but is not a "Family" membership. Supposedly, it's for two people.

After going to the Omaha Lifetime Fitness facility and signing up for a Couple's membership ($109), paying the signup fee ($99), and authorizing the first monthly membership payment, I received a call from my Lifetime Fitness agent the following day.

Seems like they "forgot" part of the membership process, and that in order to qualify for the couples rate the couple in question must not only be a "couple", but also provide proof of cohabitation. This proof, I was informed, must be a marriage certificate, shared names on a mortgage, or shared names on a checking or savings account.

Well, if you're married, you're married. But just how many non-married "cohabiting" couples are co-signing a mortgage, or have opened a joint check account? Very, very few. So effectively, either you're married, you're married, or you're married.

I provided various letters and bills sent to both of us at the same address, and those were rejected as being insufficient proof that we were in fact a couple and living together. We were not, according to the aforementioned signed contract, a "couple with a shared financial obligation".

Since I was unable to provide the proof needed for a Couple's account, Lifetime would, however, be more than happy to split the account up to two single accounts, each paying $59/mo... for a total of $10 more per month.

So Lifetime advertises a Couples account (not a Family account, and otherwise known as the Bait). They sign you up for said account, and then inform you after purchasing that you don't qualify for it. They then offer to up-sell you to two, more expensive accounts (the Switch).

The fact that only married couples can possibly qualify for a Couples account is false advertising. The fact that they use it to up-sell you to more expensive services is classic bait-and-switch advertising.

Beware.

I ran into this problem with my fiancee. The manager even suggested we open a checking account just for LifeTime. I downloaded my bank statement in PDF format (thanks Wachovia) and added "and ****** ******" to it. Sailed right through. Right now I've got us both on there for $69/mo, so I can't complain too much about price. It's still overpriced though.

Life Time Fitness customer service

Jamie Blair "" Life time Fintess in warrenville has a very horrible customer service commitment. Peter Janunas who is a member advisor there laughed in my face after he denied my guest entry on the weekend. The embarrasing experience I had there has forced myself and others to cancel my membership because the turned away a paying customer who has recommended many of their members to that facility just to find out that they do not care about us as customers. I would have thought for the type of inconvience they gave me, it would of came with atleast an apoligy and not arogant smirks from a member advisor. I understand if a guest policy changes, but to deny my guests while at the same time post on their website for first time visitors a 1-day free pass ages 18-21 which were the guidelines my guest also fell into?

Life Time Fitness bad cancellation policy

Lifetime Fitness required me to come into their facility to cancel my membership. I went in on 7-22-10 informed them that I needed to cancel because of loss of income. They indicated that they would charge me an additional month on 8-1-2010 which is apparently standard practice. I called their corporate office and the local club to see if this additional payment would be waived but they would not waive this additional payment. The local club said they would check to see if they could waive this final fee but never called me back. Repeatedly when I called to speak with a manager I was forwarded to a voice message box that had not been set up yet and could not take messages. I had to call back only to be forward to this mailbox again and again. I had no trouble with the club as a member and were I financially able I would have continued to remain a member.

Life Time Fitness denied 24 hour access

I joined the Atascocita, TX Lifetime club about 2 months ago. While signing up, I specifically asked the salesman, Johnny, if my whole family would have 24 hour access to the club. Johnny said, "Yes!" Last Thursday evening, I could not sleep and neither could my 15 year old daughter. So I suggested we go work out. My daughter thought that would be a good idea and we were off for a 20 minute drive to the gym. When we arrived at 11:30pm, we were greeted at the door by Lifetime employee, Jessica. Jessica said, "She can't come in here!"(referring to my 15yr old daughter.) Jessica went on to say, " We have a policy that states members under 17 years old cannot come in after 11:00pm." I was surprised at this policy and asked if my daughter could enter this one time...she would be with me the whole time...and we would be gone in 45 minutes. Jessica said "NO!" So I had to drive 20 minutes back to the house to drop off my daughter...then drive 20 minutes back to gym to get my 45 minutes cardio workout in.

I have sent emails and left voice mails withe the sales rep, Johnny, and also with the General Manager, Ryan. I even called the coorperate customer service rep and finally talked to Bab. After 4 days...I still have heard nothing.

I even saw Johnny signing up more people hours after I left a voicemail with him.

Bottom Line...Lifetime is interested in taking your money only. They want to sign up new members but they don't want to address issues with members they alreay have.

I am canceling my debit card and filing a membership cancelation form AFTER I cancel my card.

I bet they call me then...when the money stops...ROTFL!

STAY AWAY FROM LIFETIME FITNESS!

An update to yesterdays complaint...

Appearantly it is due to the city Curfew here, but is not a corporate policy. It is due to incidents that occured.

I had been promised 24 hour access, in fact is why I purchased my membership.

Luckily, I was dealing with a wonderful member advisor, who got it cleared by the department head, and has noted my account, allowing 24 hour access. Very pleased with the outcome. Thank you Lifetime Fitness.

I just signed up 3 days ago, and am 16. LT is double the price of my previous club. The reason I purchased the membership was because of the 24/7. The "Member Advisor" Johnathon, also told me I would have access to the facilities 24/7, and I also showed up last night, to find out the same thing. I had been dropped off, and luckily the employee at the Front desk was very sweet and let me in, but if they do not note my account as she said they would, I will be canceling it. I have two weeks money back guarantee.

I experienced the same thing tonight at the Mansfield, TX location. I have three kids, 16, 15, and 9. While I am working out they normally play soccer on the indoor field. We arrived at the club at 9pm and were told that my 9year old could not come in, no kids are allowed after 9. I asked where this policy was. The very rude lady walked me over to the service counter and proceeded to hand me the hours of the facility, unfortunately for her, the turf hours were not listed, but she said they were online and she would print me a copy. I asked if this is a policy why is it not posted and why was I told my family could use the facility 24 hours? Her response...it's online.
The facility is in a family suburb full of families. I pay for a family membership, but family hours are very limited. If I choose to take my kids with me for a hour workout and they want to play soccer, what's the big deal?
I agree they only want the money, promise all the can to get your money and then get rude and defensive when you expect them to provide the service that you not only pay for but were promised as a main selling feature.

Stormwatcher,

We appreciate the comment and we apologize for the situation you had to encounter at the club late that evening. A representative from Life Time Fitness will be reaching out to you to discuss this further.

In general, there are a couple of different reasons for this policy of no minors between the hours of 11pm and 5am, with the biggest of them being our need to honor local curfew ordinances, which are often in effect regardless of parent/guardian supervision. Because of this, we had to adopt a club access policy for minors. When someone from the club calls you, they can explain this is more detail.

Thanks again for the comment. We are here to listen and help when we can!

Regards,

Bob Stanke

Probably, the reason they do this is because they don't want fitness zealous people dragging minors to the gym at all hours of the night. I think, however, that at 15, your daughter was old enough and maybe they need to revise the policy to no children under 13 after XX:00 or something like that. That is just my opinin though. Definitely, their policies need to be in writing.

They need to rewrite they state policy. It should not matter when the mom/dad is there. If the teen was along, I could understand. But having the mom or dad, its just a plan dumb policy.

Life Time Fitness contract policy is ethically wrong

My husband developed a really bad skin infection in March. It was so bad that he had to go to a doctor immediately. It was a staph infection.
The doctor hypothesized that one of the reasons why he developed this infection may have been because he was in a pool/or hot tub on several occasions. The only hot tub/pool that he was in was at Lifetime Fitness.

He went through hell.

So, I called Lifetime Fitness to cancel his membership on April 1st. The woman who answered the phone said to me that my husband had to be the one to cancel the contract. However, she said, ‘he could mail a letter and sign it. And the letter has to be postmarked by April 5th.’ She gave me the address on Higgins Road and I was all set to go.
The only problem was that she neglected to inform me that the letter had to be “certified.”

I mailed the letter on April 2nd with the date, my husband’s membership #, a written statement saying he wanted to cancel his membership, and his signature.

When May 1st came around, I was charged again for another month! I was (and still am) furious!

How can this be? After everything we went through?
I did everything that Lifetime Fitness requested and I’m still paying?

Ethically it’s not right.
Now, it’s about principal. A multi-million dollar company doesn’t have $59.95 to refund a client, who may have gotten sick from their waters?

The moral of the story is that whenever signing a contract make sure you know EXACTLY how to get out of it, if you have to.
Lifetime has bad business practices and sooner or later it will be their demise.

I second that motion to contact the local Health Department and call a lawyer. Also, all I read is complaints about the lifetime contract and not able to get out of it or lifetime canceling memberships for nearly any reason and believe me, they can cancel you just for making a sarcastic remark to an employee.
All people need to do is turn the tables. You want out? Call the general manager any bad name, swear at them or flip them off - you will not be charged from that day on!

At lifetime there is a sign on the wall that says first come first play. That is there rule they put up the board however because there is a group of younger guys who either work or have spouses who work at the gym that has been allowed to decide who can and who can not play.

Oh please, I, too, had a Lifetime Fitness membership for a month and couldn't wait to cancel it! Horrible people, louder than Grand Central station, the trainers could care less about the members unless you pay them an exhorbitant fee for personal training. It's a freaking zoo at every location. They kept calling me long after I begged them to take me off their d*** call list! Rude, nasty, overbearing, obnoxious snots! It's nothing more than moving as many people through as possible. I've had memberships all over the city of Atlanta for 25 years ... Lifetime Fitness, by far, is the worst club I have ever joined, and thank God, I cancelled. NEVER AGAIN! STAY AWAY!

People need to be less careless. When you sign the membership papers, it states that they aren't responsible for lost or stolen items. Their jobs are not as baby sitters to watch to make sure you don't forget anything. People need to take some responsibility for their own mistakes. It must suck to have your things stolen, but at least after this, you won't make the same mistake twice.

Life Time Fitness cancellation

I had a life threatening motorcycle accident and tried to put my membership on hold. When I went back to the club 5 months later even though the doctor told me to wait 6 months STU the club manager informed me I would have to pay all the back months that I was injured in order to return to the club. This in spite of a sign in front of the club that says free memberships? I haven't returned and they keep billing me even though I told them I wasn't interested in continuing my membership.

you likely have to give 30 days notice for cancellations or provide medical documentation when you had your accident to freeze the account. the gym and your doctor are not affiliated so what kind of a [censor]tard would think that just because your doc said 6 months, your gym somehow magically knew about this and froze it for you. and you can't just say you "told" them. wtf is that? you entered into a legal binding agreement with the club for a membership you purchased, and you signed. i'm sure there are printed terms on that thing you signed which states all the proper procedures for freezing/cancellations. as with all other ADULT responsibilities in life, you can't just get out of something the way you want. you need to follow the terms you AGREED to in the first place.

lesson: READ WHAT YOU SIGN PEOPLE, and IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH SOMETHING, DONT [censor]ING BUY IT/SIGN IT
