Cancellation Policy

Company information:
LA Fitness
Indianapolis, Indiana
United States

I have been a member of LA Fitness (Glendale, Indianapolis) for the past couple years. Due to hard economic times I decided to cancel my monthly membership. My monthly membership of $34.99 was being withdrawaled directly from my personal checking account each month. To cancel a membership you have to visit their website, download and print a cancellation form, and mail it to their offices in Irvine, California. I followed this procedure 3 months ago. To my surprise I found out that I was still being charged to this very day. When I called the local LA fitness they asked if I had received an email notification after I sent the letter. I said I had not. They said there was nothing they could do to reimburse me for the months I never attended the gym. They did suggest to mail in the same cancellation form but send it "certified mail".

That afternoon a went to the post office to send my cancellation form "certified mail". As I did this, the woman working the desk mentioned that I was probably the 8th person to send a cancellation letter to LA Fitness "certified mail" today! I was shocked to find this out. It seems to me that LA Fitness may be deliberately not canceling accounts and continuing to take former members money. Could this many cancellation letters really get lost in the mail? I think not.

This is a complete rip off!!!

In February 2009, our daughter (just turned 18 and a few days) signed a personal training contract with the LA Fitness located on Southport Rd in Indianapolis. Knowing that she would be going off to college, she wanted to know if she would be able to cancel the contract when she left for school. The person signing her up called Buddy (now a VP - I think I know why), who informed them that our daughter could do that if she sent a written request (never said anything about certified mail) along with documentation showing a new address. So far so good other than the fact that they are taking $120/month from a girl still in high school (without her parent's knowledge) on top of her monthly dues. FYI these charges equalled the sum of about 20 hours of work at her after school jobs. Now tell me, would a respectable organization sign a high schooler up for such a program?!

In June, our daughter submitted a letter to the local club as she had been instructed along with her college acceptance letter and her new address. She closed her letter by asking the club to contact her if something more was required of her. Over the next two months, she was in contact with one of the trainers who told her he "was handling it". Supposedly, he sent the letter to Buddy and called him a couple of times. Evidently, our daughter did not send it via certified mail or in an official format to "Corporate". NOBODY HAD THE DECENCY to inform her that anything else was required. Why should they? LA Fitness was getting more money.

We, mistakenly, were thinking everything was taken care of and that somebody was actually trying to get a refund for the month of August. At least that was our thinking until we saw new charges for $34.99 and $120 hit her bank account causing it to go negative.

My wife and I went in to find out what was going on and to get a refund (lol). While there, somebody called Buddy, who either denied or forgot the phone conversation. We ended up settling for a buydown of an additional $180 which the club felt was generous.

We were told that an email would be sent that confirmed the cancellation. When no email came, I became more suspicious. Since no email arrived, I went back to the club to have them sign papers acknowledging that no further charges would be incurred. To their credit, they did sign these.

More than one person that worked for LA Fitness acknowledged that they knew our daughter was leaving for school and that she had been working to get this taken care of in the manner in which she had been instructed. When asked why they did not call her if they knew she needed to do something else, they said it was "corporate policy". When I made the comment that it was blatantly obvious that this cumbersome (idiotic) cancellation policy is designed to get a few extra months of payments out of people, they kind of shrugged and shook their heads "yes".

As a side note, another woman came in to cancel her agreement and they told her that she woould have to send a letter by certified mail. They commented that it was no big deal, "only 51cents". SHE WAS RIGHT THERE!!! HOW IDIOTIC!

WHAT A RACKET?! I will do everything I can to spread the word of this callousness and injustice.

I agree, LA Fitness does make you feel trapped with their cancellation policy. Be warned about inviting a guest too. Harassment to join is on the agenda, even before your guest has a chance to enjoy the atmosphere. My guest was not able to enjoy his visit, why would he of joined? He had been considering it before we walked in.
