Home depot has decided to not give a discount to all military veterans. All veterans will get a discount on Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. Only retired, disabled, and active military members will be able to get a discount anytime. I think it is a dishonor for Home Depot to not recognize all the Veterans that served a short period of time to protect the freedom we have. Lowes will honor all Veterans anytime and so my business will be there from now on. I hope all Veterans will recognize this serious decision Home Depot has made during this time of war and the need to support and recognize all military personnel.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I am so disappointed in the military discount from Home Depot. My 83 disabled veteran father is not tech savvy. He doesn’t even own a smartphone or computer yet home depot is requiring an online application and uploading a document to prove his military status. Some of these veterans don’t have the ability to meet these demands. I called the HR department and they said their hand were tied and wouldn’t grant the discount without this newer system. I am saddened by this companie’s lack of honor for these older veterans. Lastly, you may not understand what the big deal is but to my dad who is so proud to show his military ID it is a big deal and it is defeating to feel that his disabled veteran ID is not good enough anymore.
Now you have to use your Home Depot app to get your VA discount, if it applies. The problem is you have no internet in our Home Depot store. Try doing a screenshot of the barcode for them and they said it had to be active no screenshots. Home Depot does not give you a discount on wood Plumbing electrical or appliances. It seems like they're making it just about impossible for a veteran to get a break I've never had this problem at Lowe's. And once you hit $400 they cut your discount off for a year.
I agree. I just experienced this yesterday. I specifically went to Home Depot this last weekend after calculating in the military discount only to find that they don't give the discount on anything related to building materials or improvements, applicances, etc. The associate demonstrated that they would allow the discount on a Snickers Bar. Just great. This was very disappointing. Back to Lowes and Menards.
I am an active duty spouse. This is crazy how they are taking everything away. I have put in my own complaint on this site regarding Military Discount as well.
This is something quite new to home depot. I purchased a few tarps and a 4 dollar small roll of insulation. At check out the girl said the insulation is a commodity and not eligible for the 10% discount. I asked how do i know what is eligible and what is not, her answer was just come to the register and the computer will tell me if it is qualifying for a discount. I sent a letter to home depot and the is the reponse this is pissing up your leg and tell you it's raining. This is dated may 26, 2014 and they say their computer can't doan over ride but for thepast seven uears all things got the discount unless it was a sale item. Home depot is on my slist and will only go there on my last resort. If you check the day i bought the small insulation it was memorial day. These companies treat us like dogs, they offer you something then they see they could make more money not giving a discout so screw you home depot. The cashiers and managers have no clue what items are eligible and could care less about us. Sorry this was a long email but go try to buy some items and see what happens.
Today i think i will fill a hand cart full of non - eligible items then when they say no discout i'll walk out and go to lowe's semper fi tom kubishin

I think the take home mensaje from the autor of this post is that only selected groups off veterans are getting a discount at home depot while lowes gives the discount to everyone who served. I guess we veterana fiel entitled at times when in reality hit was our choice to join and serve. Heck I Works at an a ir force base and many civilians employees fiel that they should get discounts.
I do not think that the question is whether you deserve the discount or not, it is a question of how the policy is worded. Most people who serve in the military are "Veterans" so why the distinction between "Military" and "Veteran". Also there is a grey area, for instance how about the WWII veteran who only served 19 years in the service(remember you need to have 20 years in to be considered retired, one of the requirements) he was in the war, why is he treated differently than active, retired, medical, dependents etc etc...Not to mention the inconsistency in how the policy is administered. This is influenced by store, time of day and employee, which means you can get the discount when any of those three factors fall in your favor...Not a good way to enforce policy...This only leads to dissatisfied customers who take their business elsewhere. For the most part it is good intentioned but I believe they would be better served by including all veterans...Just my opinion...
Starting August 2011 Home Depot has revised its policy for the 10% routine military discount and now requires specific ID's at checkout. Understandably this reduces fraud but here's the catch: For Veterans (not retirees or active duty personnel) unless your VA ID has the words "Service Connnected Disability" on it, there is no discount (exception: Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends). Home Depot reluctantly adopted their military discount program only under competitive pressure after Lowe's instituted one in honor of those who served their country. Now it is apparent that Home Depot does not care if the Veteran served his country, instead they care only if he is disabled. What a shame. I spend thousands of dollars at Home Depot annually, and that business just shifted to Lowe's this month as a result of the policy change at Home Depot.
The poster is a Lowe's employee. I am a veteran. There are many veterans working at Home Depot. All veterans, active-duty, reserves, national guard get the discounts. All you need to show is proper military or veteran's ID.
Honestly, I feel that if you get are going to boycott one store that used to have the discount and now doesn't, you should also boycott every single store that never had a discount. If anything, the stores that never had a discount are far worse.
But something tells me that the poster will not because then there would be barely any places to shop at.
@Jimbo, I apologize for not clarifying, though I did consider the draft while I wrote my comment and forgot to include it. Their complaint is invalid if they chose to serve. If they did not choose to serve that still doesn't make them entitled to discounts from a store. I don't understand that line of thinking. I know many people not in the military that have done equally brave or even more brave acts that do not get recognized for it (firefighters, police officers, et cetera). Our appreciation for those serving should not be measured in discounts.
Pobar, many did NOT choose to serve. There are many Vietnam Veterans who we drafted, WWII veterans still shop too. You have the freedom you have because of our VETERANS and they DESERVE everything a multi billion dollar corporation gives them.
I am really angry by people that get upset over this. You chose to serve in the military. While everyone is greatful for what you did, you are not better than those who chose not to serve in the military. You don't DESERVE anything. Kudos to the other commenters.
