Hertz $2,036 overcharge

Our son didn’t do the right thing and returned his car (on
time – no damages) at a different Hertz facility 65 miles away from where he
should have (Rental #[protected]).
Hertz provided him no receipt – stated everything was okay –
and then took an additional $2, 036 out of his credit card account with no word
or warning.

The details are in our BBB complaint - Case # [protected]
(we also filed with the FTC) but the gist of this is:

1)
No receipt, communication or indication there
was an issue – had our son been informed he would have taken the car back to
the right facility
2)
If the same stunt is pulled on a 1 day rental
for the 2 facilities involved, the overcharge is about $100 – not $2, 036 –
Hertz essentially raised his rate big time because he had a 2-month rental

3)
None of this is in the rental contract, web
site, emails, FAQs or any communications that Hertz provides when renting a car

4)
The bill submitted by Hertz (when we forced this
through a bank action) appears doctored, does not align to the rental contract,
and provides no indication that charges were changed due to the drop-off
location (despite the fact that their web site claims “transparency” for
additional charges between estimates and actuals on rentals)

5)
His copy of the estimate (although we are not
disputing what was estimated) has a forged signature on it

Our claim is that this vendor
is operating in a highly dishonest manner and hiding audit trails of their
billing practices. The BBB has them with an F+ rating, another consumer agency
has them flagged as “consumers warned not to do business with”.

At minimum, we would hope you
would warn other travelers or at least discourage them from longer term rentals
as that appears to magnify their dishonest billing practices. In addition,
corporate travel agencies and businesses that use Hertz may want to examine for
inflated billings and charges – the amounts may be significant. Having
personally traveled for decades in my business using all kinds of car rental
agencies to get around, we were extremely appalled not only at this deceptive
practice, but the total lack of response and treatment for a customer that
rented a car in good faith for a an extended period and then had that used
against them to vastly inflate rental charges.

We can provide copies of
Hertz estimate, actual bill showing fraudulent charges if needed.

Hertz fired local rental manager

I am a Presidents club member and have rented from this location for about 4 years. I the manager (Steven) was always friendly and always greeted me by name. He is a young man in his 30'S? with young children. When I went in to say hello on Friday they said the district manager just fired him for not meeting sales goals. Well I have run into this prima donna before and he has about as much personality as a rock. I called and left a message for him and said I would be dropping Hertz and he could say good by to over $10, 000 a year in business from my company.

Oh, brother..."President's Club" hahahahahaha ... like you are really in a position to cost Hertz more business than your occasional trip over 50 miles because your hoopty won't make it. You're a complete nobody, "Wayne Trigg, " and Hertz doesn't make personnel decisions based on your uninformed opinions.

It's the policy of Hertz, apparently to insist on sales "goals." At least that 's what I have heard of late. Myself, I stopped renting from Hertz a few years ago after they treated my youngest son coming home on leave from Iraq like dirt. Avis treated him very well and we have been with Avis ever since. Try Avis.

Hertz thieves

I rented a car for one day in Germany, Frankfurt Hahn. I booked the car in Internet for early morning at 4 AM, but in office was no one. I waited 3 hours, very tired, was cold, when I got the car, I saw tiny scratch. I took photo just in case. When I went to home, week later Hertz got form my credit card 200€ and one week later got letter, where was wrote that I must to cost 460 more.
I was shocked! Wrote to Hertz and sent photos, but they don't answer! Called to Hertz, but they ignore me. Every month send me letters with bill. Already I try to back my 200€ five month. it's useless :(

Hertz admin fees for car fines

In early january my visa statement showed hertz italiana spa roma charged me €341. I rang visa and had payment reimbursed as no explanation or authority from me (Visa did write to state that if payment was legitimate they would re-instate the debit)
On 14th feb hertz italiana spa roma sent me 8 letters each for 42.70 'admin fee' for alleged traffic violations - some of which separated by minutes (E. G. 14/08/2013 17:19, 14/08/2013 17:28, 14/08/2013 17:42).
I am horrified - how could I 1) incur so many traffic violations and 2) how could hertz's system be allowed to charge as tey have.
Hertz claim they have 'sustained' this cost which utter [censored] - its a system generated revenue generator.
See you in court hertz - I have been renting cars for 20 years and never seen such a rip off attempt.

I got the same… Car was rented in Pisa in September 2014, and the 42, 70 EUR charge was already taken 2 times (January, February 2015)… If this keeps repeating I will have to block the card. But this is something fishy… Someone knows the adress of the HERTZ Italia to clarify what is going on?

Hertz Italiana Spa Roma made a 42.70euro charge on my visa card and I dont know what it is for. We paid account in full on 3.1.14. This charge is dated 23.4.14. What is going on. How can I get it reversed?

On January 3rd 2014 Hertz Italiana Spa Roma has charged me for EUR 42.70 (Nota nr. 45829). I sent my first complaint about this in the middle of January, but I have not not heard a single word or argument from you. More than half a year ago I payed you the total sum for renting a car in september in Treviso Airport. I have made no traffic offenses with your car, since I have not had any fine or complaints from the Italian police. So what is the sum EUR 42.70 for?

Hertz bait and switch tactics

Stay away from hertz! We rented from hertz because their website was the only one that claimed you could rent "this exact model" and due to the number of people on our trip, we needed a specific sized car. Upon arriving at the rental desk, we were detained for more than an hour while one of their employees strolled around the rental lot looking for a car for us. We were astonished they had no list of the cars available and kept us waiting that long.in the end, they brought up a much smaller car. It became clear after we left that is was indeed a smokers car and one of our riders had to ride with a carryon bag in their lap the entire time due to the small trunk. We smelled of cigarettes each time we emerged from the car. It was clear they had sprayed something in the car to neutralize the smell long enough for us to leave the airport. Upon returning, I called hertz about the bait and switch tactic and was told manager todd plancon would be calling me back. It has been almost 2 weeks and no call. Mr. Plancon must not be concerned about his companies failures or is on the verge of retiring and simply doesn't care. When I called back today, it was another huge runaround and no accountability. We will not ever rent from hertz again at this point due to their irresponsible methods of doing business and their failure to provide what was promised and follow through at any level.

Received a letter on 12/24/13 which was dated 12/13/2013 that there was a $.30 toll violation in Illinois. My EZ Pass bill shows multiple toll transactions while driving there yet this one was not paid and they are now charging me a $17.00 Administrative fee. A call to the Illinois Tollway office could not find a violation against the vehicle I was driving.

Hertz misrepresentation of rental agreement

Good Day
I went to the Hertz location in Palm Beach, Fl. to pick up my mid-sized car only to find they did not have one. The agent explained since I am a "GOLD MEMBER" that I was being upgraded to a mini-van. I explained that I have a 7 hr drive and a mini-van was not acceptable. I viewed the parking lot and found a 4 dr Toyota. I asked if could have that one and she said it was already rented. I asked her to explain how that person can get the car they requested but I can't. She could not. I told her the Gold Member status was truly a joke. Do not be fooled by that classification. The previous Hertz rental I had which had all kind of mechanical issues and when I got to the drop off destination and explained the issues they immediately rented it to a customer because they had no other cars. The time before that the aux power plug did not work for your phone charger and he was explaining to me how to try and locate the fuse while I was on the road. These cars are not being inspected properly and are being leased out with the same issues. My company likes renting from Hertz but I am hoping with all the complaints they are getting they will change.

Hertz hertz charges

I have just received a charge to my debit card of EUR -43, 00 plus a second charge for the same amount the same day 27.11.13. . There is no explanation for this charges. The car was returned in Rome, Italy on August 5, 2013. I have a feeling this a scam and feel unprotected.
Please help me to find out the reason for this charges and obtain the corresponding credit

Hertz unreasonable charges

I have sent 2 mails to Hertz Gold Service but no any reply, Please check mail below:

My Golden Card No. is : [protected].

I have rent a car in Frankfurt Airport on 1 Nov 2013, and return on 3 Nov 2013.

I got a unreasonable charge in below description, please check attachment for detail info.

“SCHADEN/DAMAGE VORLAEUFIG 290.00”

When I return the car to service, they said there is 2 little scratches on one wheel which is not record in system.

But I have put my comment when I return the car, I never create any scratch during my driving period.

When I took the car on 1 Nov 2013, I saw the scratches on all 4 wheels, and it is a lot, and I saw the paper reception given to me, maybe I’m not check it very carefully, I thought she already put X on all 4 wheels.

So it is unreasonable to charge me 290 EUR for these 2 little scratches which is not created by me.

I’m very disappointed for Hertz service, even it is my fault to not report it earlier, but it is unreasonable for 2 little scratches at 290 EUR. Not mention I’m the golden member of Hertz.

I strongly required to give my 290 EUR back, this unreasonable charge should be canceled ASAP.

Please give your fastest reply according to below mail, if this matter cannot get fair and impartial treatment, I will keep complaining to high level, for Hertz, just so you know, it is not just lose one golden member, if you know what I mean.

My wife in CC is also a witness that seeing the scratches on all 4 wheels when I took the car on 1 Nov 2013. She checked and told me: “do we need to report these scratches, some serious and some minor, they are on all 4 wheels, ?” I said: “the service already marked, it is like this.” I think all the foreigners should have this kind of fault to not report it earlier as it is sort of self-service to pick up the car.

Please be justice, you can give me a warning this time for not report it earlier, but not without any confirmation from me and charge me 290 EUR for this 2 little scratches on wheel which is not created by me.

As the partner of Huawei, we need to trust each other, and then the cooperation can go further.

We took the car from Frankfurt Airport. Even we got the charge. When we took the car, We haven't observe with microscope for any dents. Now they charged us with 200 EUR. May be this is standard charge for every silly thing. May be the previous service man had not checked and when he checked when we returned, he found it. Its unacceptable but unfortunate that we couldn't prove any thing.

Hertz money taken from my credit card

A payment has been taken from my Access Account without any notification or explanation. An amount of €42.70 has been deducted by Hertz Italiana Spa. I hired a car in May this year and paid my bill in full at the time.It is now the end of October and Hertz decided to take money from my Credit Card details which they would have on file. Please help me with this dilemma.

Hertz misrepresentation

I recently booked a hertz car rental online without any extras included. On arrival at the airport I was asked by the representative whether I would like additional liability insurance. I was travelling with two others and we discussed this at length between us and the representative and decided that we would not like this cover as the cost was more per day than the deal on the car itself! We did take the prepay fuel option though and I signed the agreement before leaving. What I didn't realise was the representative had added the liability insurance to the agreement. Tired after a long journey I should really have checked the agreement fully but after such a long conversation with the representative, I certainly was not expecting an error like that to be made as our decision couldn't have been made any clearer. After returning the car I was notified of the charge on my credit card and immediately contacted Hertz head office about this. They informed me that I would have to contact the airport desk direct and gave me the number. Every time I tried calling, I was auto redirected back to head office who again told me I had to speak to the desk! Even when transferring me directly, I was again redirected back to head office! Finally I was given a number to call but surprisingly enough, nobody at the desk answered after calling time and time again. I complained again via email and hertz would not budge as I had signed the agreement etc etc.. This to me is blatant misrepresentation and at a cost of $350 to myself, the representative made a small percentage commission so good for him. I wil never use Hertz again, never.

I had rented a car from Hertz Car rental in Cologne and at the time of rental i had informed them that I would be travelling to Austria and would return the car at Austria. They had not informed me anything about Toll charges on entering Austria and due to this we got fined for not taking the toll sticker and paying the toll. Hence I would like to complain about Hertz service and request them to make the payment of the fine.

Not Hertz that made the mistake... You signed without looking over everything first.
As far as the employee making a commission on the sale? I use Hertz all the time and I am a Hertz Gold member. I have found that they are by far the BEST of the rental car companies. As far as I can see, they do not get paid commissions on the INSURANCE. They do make commissions on upgrades and the actual rental. It is also possible that the location gets incentives for TOTAL sales BUT I do not think that the $350 made a large difference.

Hertz made me wait 1:15 for an rsvp I confirmed

I reserved this car at 301 East 69th St. Last time I visited the kiosk there was broken. I notified the office at East 76th street of this 3 weeks ago that it was broken. So I called in advance to confirm 1)they had my car and 2) that the kiosk worked. I waited 25 minutes on hold. I was told they couldn't confirm either. So I arrived at 9: 05 for my 9 AM RSVP. I was told 1) that the kiosk was still broken and 2)they did not have my car. I spent another 25 minutes on the phone with customer support (my family waiting). They told me to go to 25th Street. That's 2 miles away and would have been a $20 cab ride. The garage attendant told me a car would be on the way from Queens. Finally--at 10:15 AM--my car arrived. Is this what I get for being a No. 1 Club Gold member? What kind of service is that? Would you pay someone to have to wait one hour and 15 minutes for a car even when you've spent 25 minutes calling in advance to confirm. Hertz clearly doesn't care about customer service. I'm extremely disappointed. I don't know why I chose to join this program. People who care about other people don't treat them this way for a living.

Hertz over charged

I rented a vechicle for a week from July 27 - Aug 3, 2013 from San Jose, Costa Rica reservation #F84326471D6. Nobody could tell me how far it was from Sane Jose to my destination to Guancaste, Liberia when i booked the flight or rent the car. When we arrived at the airport an hour late they shuttled us to the rental place to pick up our car. My kids and i were already tired and were ready to get settled in at our destination but come to find out that we had to drive 4 hours to get there. When they brought out the car it was a stick so they had to switch us back out because all 3 of us cannot drive a stick and they gave us a map to follow and it would cost us to go through some tolls. We didnt start out until after 4 and ended up finding our place in the dark hoping my time share place was not closed. I was furious to say the least. Already my vacation was ruined. However the gentleman that handeled the reservation kept saying we had to have this we had to have this. So i also prepaid for gas because not knowing where gas stations are within that country we had to make sure we had to have enough gas to make it back so we would not miss our flight. I had one bar less than 1/2 a tank and i did not get reimbursed for the gas left in the car and little to my surprize the total was $857.16 for the week. My 2 kids and i at home pay $1, 200 every six months. How does a rental of $254.00 go to this ungodlly amount for a week. Nobody would rent a car for that price. I found out that one of the girls from the place we were staying took a bus and it was $45 one way. We 3 could of took the bus back and forth for the price of the rental considering all we basically used the car for was to travel the 4 hours to our destination which we could of avoided since we were tired to begin with because we mostly took excursions that included the transportation to where we going. They had golf carts that we could rent by the day or a taxi for the few kilometers we had to go. One trip was to Nicguara which we left at 5am and got back at 10pm so we didnt even use the car at all. I will try to fax you a copy of my receipt which i can hardly read or mail it to your company. I cant believe that Interval International which i booked through which i have been a member for years that they did not ask me if i had any coupons. I have a discount card t should of used CDP#334505 when i booked this reservation. I believe this amount is terriably high. My first vacation out of the country litterally made me sick over this. I would like to get this resolved so i can pay the reasonable amount that i owe or i will never rent from Hertz again.

Hertz illegally charged for damage

I received a letter in the mail from Hertz Australia claiming I am responsible for windscreen damage & charged $200. I explained to Hertz claims dept. -a Agi Tsarouhidis by email (they don't like to take calls and never return calls) there were two chips (not one as they indicated) and if I was not already half an hour away from the airport I would have returned the car. Several emails & still no reply.
I have been a Gold memeber for fifteen years, have always treated a rental car as my own & have never incurred any damage.
Clearly this is a scam Hertz have going. Send out blanket bills for damage with the expectation most/ if not all will pay. A shameful organisation that does not deserve your business.

Hertz irregular charge

I lost the car keys inside Premium outlet mall and I called Hertz, where I rented the car(RR [protected]), for assistance. After 30 minutes waiting an operator answered me and I explained that I lost the car keys. I explained that my English wasn't perfect, because I am a Brazilian, and asked her to be patient with me. After a while she said she was going to send me a locksmith to help me, and I said I could leave the car and grab a taxi home, she oriented me otherwise telling me to wait for the locksmith she would send to me and that I should not pay for this service because I was covered. When I dropped the car off at the airport I received a bill with the amount due for the key $589.00 US DOLLARS. That is not fair. I need someone to help me show this company service is not acting correctly. They have a site WWW.HERTZ.COM/CHARGEEXPLAINED for explanation of the charges but it never works. I can't afford to pay this amount for a key, I could have waited for the next day that I am sure I would find the key, or even rent another car for this amount. I am certain the call has been recorded to comprove my history. I am trying to get in touch with them but it is almost impossible.

NEVER AGAIN HERTZ!
Misleading, overcharging, especially in Germany - Duesseldorf Airport. After 2 weeks returning from my trip, my credit card shows additional charges without any explanation. Phone calls from USA to Germany Hertz office is impossible, as they hang up.
NEVER AGAIN with HERTZ!

Hertz over billing

I too have learned the hard way to stay away from Hertz and, for that matter, AAA as well. I was over billed for insurance that AAA Alabama said I had upon opening a Visa acount with them. When I got to the Hertz counter at Frankfurt, Germany airport I was told I had no insurance. It seems a matter of no one willing to accept any responsibilty for the outrageous amount that I paid for insurance. Be smart by booking your vacation or trip yourself rather than using AAA and, absolutely, stay away from Hertz.

Hertz mistreatment

I am a frequent traveler renting around 20 cars in different places of the word per year. Today I has the worst experience I ever had in renting a car, from Hertz at Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens. . I am an Aegian Airlines Gold Member and I was told I was entitled to a discount and to free upgrade. I asked for the category before last with same day return. I was given the keys of an automatic Peugeot 107 and was told the exact spot and told to pick it up. No mention for any damage or need for inspection. When I went there I noticed that the all rims were damaged and the car was dirty. The colour was a "taxi" yellow not quite appropriate for a 54 year old businessman going to a meeting. There was nobody at the delivery station at 12.00 noon and I had to wait for 10 minutes until somebody appeared in a car saying that he has to go somewhere and he will be back in a few minutes. I told him that I was in a hurry and he came out and checked the car and noted the damages on the form. When waiting I called at the office and told an employee of Hertz that the car seem to be very small for the category I thought I was entitled to, and it was dirty. He told me to tell the employees at the delivery station to change the car but he himself was not willing to do so. I complaint about the whole treatment and he said he was sorry and that the manager was going to call me in about 10 minutes. As I was in extreme hurry to go to a meeting I was afraid of loosing more time and I thought I could do with a dirty car. So I got in and hit the road. I then noticed that the car was in a very bad condition. Around 33.000 km with obvious signs of wear and tear. On the road it was unacceptable. The automatic element was not working properly especially when gears were changing. The air-condition was not working adequately and I had to put its fun to full speed that produced a terrible noise. I arrived at my meeting sweating. Of course the manager did not call me until now. Worst of all, I felt mistreated and like I was dealing with a third world company. The car I was given was not up to standards by any means. I got the impression that instead of upgrading an Aegean Gold Member as per the scheme, HERTZ behaved like I was there for a free ride and I was given the worst of all. When I checked on the internet I assumed that HERTZ might have placed the Peugeot 107 in the same category with Smart which is too far fetched.

I really wish to bring this incident to your attention because I was expecting a better treatment from a company that claims to be of the leaders of the sector.

Hertz charging my credit card without reason

I rented a car from www.rentalcars.com which is a car rental agent. I paid them directly at the time of booking. I received a car from Hertz in Geneva from 30th March until 7th April. The car was duly returned fully tanked and at exactly same condition as before rental period. A week later I found out that my credit card had been charged by Hertz Geneva 665 CHF. I did not receive any notice and I dont know why this amount is charged. They charged without any notification. I called rentalcars.com but they had no idea why this was charged and they advised me to call Hertz in Switzerland as they were the one charging my card. Then I called Hertz. After being routed to many different people finally a guy from customer service (name Stefan) said I had rented a GPS with the car which I did not return. This was totally rubbish isaid. I had not received any GPS and ask them to check their inventory list. He promised to check and get back to me. Even I gave my email address again. A week later, nothing happened and I called them again. I was once again passed from one department to another department. Finally I came again to customer relation. This time a guy (Name Owe who was extremely rude) said he doesnt know anything about the charge as there is only one word in their report which is "Damage". When i asked him several times why they charge my card without any proper report, reasoning or notification to me, he just hang up. It has gone 16 days since they charged my credit card and still I have no idea about the reason. I thought Hertz is a well known and reputable car rental firm> But it seems they are extremely careless in customer management.

Hertz poor customer service

Car rented from sacramento, ca. airport. had comformation number for car two hours prior. apon arival I was informaned that they did not have my car. let the one week nightmare begin. they stuck me with a new cadillac that I didnt want. nothing worked on the car. customer service is non existicing, another 2 hrs. of waisted time. I got lost at least a dozen times with a non working gps. the free xm radio did not work. the car controls needs a rocket scienctist to figure out. this car was one problem after another. hertz customer service is worthless and non existing. I will never rent from these people again. I will also let everyone I know, do not rent from hertz, they are unprofessional scammers.

If you e-mail the regional manager you will get some if not all of your money back! I've had an issue with them before at the Pittsburgh Airport as well.

Hertz on line reservation not accepted

Imagine arriving at 1100pm into Merida Mexico, noone around to help, no other car companies open and your online reservation is not accepted at the Hertz counter. The rep tries to strong arm you for $500 extra dollars to get the same car you booked through the company web site. Now make it worse - you have your whole family 2 kids and spouse. Even worse - corporate Hertz will not help.
That was my Christmas vacation in Mexico. I'm warning everyone to never rent from Merida, Mexico. I'm also warning that Hertz Corporate is worthless.
