Harrassing phone calls
Complaint Rating:
I received a phone call today about one of my neighbors. I asked the man on the phone who he was 3 times. Then he tells me he's wanting to get a hold of this neighbor. I told him I don't know anything about her as I had just returned to town after a death in the family. He said okay and then was very nice to offer condolences. I told him he should try to call her himself. He said thanks and hung up.
I see a lot of other people had an uglier experience with these folks though. I suggest you invest in an inexpensive tape recorder and record the conversations. I would even go so far as to say, "I'm recording this conversation to give to my attorney, so please speak clearly." (Might even work to get them to stop calling you all together.)
Legally they aren't allowed to call and harrass neighbors of people who owe money, whether it's legitimate or not. Know your rights! If you are still dealing with them after you've advised them you're recording it for your attorney, I suggest you really talk to an attorney about this. If enough people are having problems with them, a class action lawsuit can be filed.
I'm not offering legal advice here, just stating what I would do if it were me. Thankfully, one phone call is all I'm expecting, but you can bet I'll take my own advice if they ever call again!
