Great American Reader False claims

Very misleading and down right nasty. I was told I would be able to cancel my subscription at anytime without any hassle and that I'd receieve a $1000. gift card. So, I took the bait and accepted their offer. I must say the stuff they offer is stuff that can be found in any secondhand store and you ended paying more in shipping than what the item was actually worth. And, as for canceling without hassle is a bunch of BS. I'm a full-time college student and currently unemployed and have attempted to cancel my subscription and they refuse to honor my request. I have received phone calls or more like threats stating, "Its in your best interest to call us back at ..." from them. I just want to put an end to this craziness. So, don't fall for this scam.

Great American Reader Unauthorized charges

I am a college student and I am having problems with a company called “Great American Readers. They first called contract me with 1, 000 shopping spree, If I purchase 39.95(offer the student discount) monthly payments for year of magazines. It didn't sounds bad, So I give them my account information.. Also, I was suppose to receive a paper for rules, account information and website to shopping for products within 3 to 5 days ( I was promised by the company). But that was the beginning of March.

I still have not receive anything, included the five magazines. The company said I have to wait for a other month (early may) before I have my magazine and information. But, they are ready took money out of my account for the 1st payment. They kept calling about making the next payment for magazines that I have not received, yet. Then They finally send me two magazine and information about the shopping spree. In which its not worth it! I can't pay them, because I don't have the money. Also I try to canceled my account with them, but The Company said its to late. And I did a background check on the company over the internet and I find a website that people are complaining about the company stealing their money out of their accounts!

Great American Reader Scam-magazine subscription+ Shopping spreefree gift card

I received a phone call in evening today, 1/20/09. They said I have been selected for shopping spree 1000$ free gift certificate. Then they said they will also send 5 magazines, visa-master card company has paid the fees for 60months. And the operator told that her supervisor will call to check her attitude and that conversation ended there. After few min, so called supervisor calls back, explains more detail and they start asking to pay 49$ for the subscription, which is actually around 3$/wk but i have to pay it in advance so i do not have to bother about paying 3$ every week for magazines. Meanwhile, i have been asked for info like my age, DOB, address etc. I asked about their company name which was " Great American Reader'. They said they are in florida. The biggest hint came when they asked my credit card no. I said i am not comfortable giving that. Then lady explained me that they are valid, certified company otherwise Visa and Mastercard will not support them. Still i did not agree to give credit card info. She tried to explain further and meanwhile the lady from the first call started talking rather then the supervisor who start conversation. At that time I realize that something is wrong. When I said third time that i will not give credit card no. they hung up before i complete the sentence. That was the big indication that it was scam and i am realizing now that how slowly i was going to be put in bottle and ripped off of money. I search internet and found this and thought of witting this to aware other people.

I was to get a free $250 giftcard then they wanted the rest of my credit card numbers, which they already knew except for the 3 number code. Sure, I thought, ok just to get at the giftcard, and I could cancel anytime. They immediately charge your card for the first month and there is no getting that back.Their phones numbers change day to day.San Antonio, Texas

I was scammed by this company in May, 2011. Now they don't promise a $1000 gift card, but the way they presented the subscriptions at $3.35 per week totally confused me. I stupidly gave out my credit card info and chose five magazines. After I hung up, I realized how much money $3.35 a week for 20 months would be and I nearly freaked out! I called back to cancel and they said they had taped my agreement to participate and I could not back out because they had already submitted my order. Now this was a matter of 10 minutes later tops. I do remember them saying they were going to tape my response, but I was just not catching on to what was happening. They agreed to shorten the subscription length to 20 months and charge 'only' 24.95 a month instead of 49.90. I agreed to try this. The next credit card statement had a charge for 49.90. I called immediately and said I needed to cancel the entire thing. After going around and around with them, I finally agreed to pay one payment of 49.90 and no more if they would cancel the whole thing. Now I have received 3 different magazines that I would never have chosen, all saying I have subscriptions until 2014. I called again and they say these are free samples the companies want to entice me to subscribe to. They have cleaned up their act somewhat, but I still say to all...don't be stupid like me and get hooked on an offer over the phone! I'll be sure this never happens to me again!

So, I agreed to this back in November and credit cards were cancelled a month later. Now they are calling and saying they are going to sen us to collection if we do not pay! Does anyone believe they will actually do that? We do not want to pay them anything and do not want to be sent to collection. HELP!
