I got a new GE Side By Side Refrigerator in 2010 the Ice Maker Dispenser worked for 4 years the one of the plastic blades on the auger broke and the ice maker would not function anymore. I got a original GE part listed above. Installed and it worked a little less than two months. I looked for entire replacement made out of metal (won't break) but none exist. This auger is very poorly made and be prepared for it to break often on you. My understanding is this auger is used in many GE Refrigerators. It is junk. Be prepared to replace it often. If you DYI the parts costs about $30.00. Making one entirely out of metal would solve the issue.

It just happened to my wife. She makes a smoothie for breakfast every morning. The plastic is not detectable with the ice and she ground up a piece of the plastic and ingested a few pieces before she figured it out.

Can you see the broken piece in the bin?

Well... It's 10-years later... Has GE taken responsible for this problem?

I purchased a GE Profile 29CF SXS in 02/09/2011. We love the refrigerator and the ice maker works great except for the darn plastic auger. The ice maker has been replaced three times since purchased because the auger breaks. Lucky I purchased the extended warranty but runs out 02/2016. This issues is a real safety problem. The second time the auger broke, a sharp thin splinter of a piece came out with the ice into my 9 year old daughters cup. Thank goodness I was there and saw the piece. I could have easily ended up stuck in her throat! There should be a recall on this device and the auger switch to 316SS metal.
