The EBT card should be for food only, how come people use then to go and get 17% Sherry cooking wine at the groceri store and get away
with it? They are drinking up the EBT cards that way!

I work hard and can't even get help with anty benefits cause I work!

Somebody needs to look in to this fast, this is my tax money they are drinking up!

Thanks!

By the way, my friend is an alcoholic and this is how he gets drunk on the 1st every month

I agree with you SP. If your not doing anything wrong, than who cares who searches your house. LA County Law Enforcement, besides New Orleans, is I believe one of the worst in the country. To many criminals get away with murder, child molestation, abuse because of a technicality. In child molestation cases, a sexual predator is only charged with one out of four child he molested. I have gotten counseling for domestic abuse, not because I had to, but because I wanted too. Do you know that most men that abuse their wife/girlfriend and children, don't serve any jail time. If they do, than it is a short stint? If a stranger came up to me and beat me up leaving bruises all over my body, they would be charged with assault. But many women, who's men abuse them, and want to leave their abuser, still get beaten up, or the abuser will kill them. I was told that, if you call the police you have a fifty fifty chance of a police officer that abuses his wife/girlfriend. Not real reassuring. The laws in California now, punish the women more than the abuser. In many cases the children are removed from a home where abuse is happening, but the abuser in most cases spend no time in jail, and are rarely charged with anything, or even required to take classes, besides anger management. The women have to take abuse classes, have monitored visitation, need to find employment... I am not saying that is wrong, but the abusers usually get off scotch free... Most even get visitation rights even though these men have a long history of domestic abuse.

I think it is a good idea that the laws force women to leave their abusers and the children are removed from the home. What I don't agree with, is that so many men get away with it beating up their women, with little or no consequences. What I don't agree with, is how the laws more punish the abused... Laws should also support these men from stopping this behavior, forcing them to stop doing drugs/alcohol, and try to stop the cycle of abuse all together. What these men will do is move on to their next victim... By not stopping the violence on both ends and forcing the abuser to be held responsible for his actions also, their just stopping part of a huge problem. Instead these men become empowered because like my ex, they feel that they can get away with anything...

SP,
I did fight back and kicked him in his junk a couple of the times he hit me. But than he would beat me up more. Domestic abuse is a horrible situation for any women. I was young and naive. The abuser brings drama, manipulation, and abuse into your life. When I did end our relationship, he became more abusive and mean. My ex was good at chipping away at my support network, and making me feel isolated and alone. Eventually you start to feel like you deserve it.

To this day, I hate law enforcement, because I did get a restraining order, called them when he left bruises up and down my body, and they didn't do anything at all. I also don't believe in our justice system, child support system. Been screwed by both one to many times... It takes years to rebuild my life. The only good my ex boyfriend did was give my children. I hope that I have raised them to respect women, not to ever hit a girl at all! I have always been honest with my children, and had long discussions about the past. So, they hopefully will show the wisdom I didn't when I was young. Now that my son is almost seventeen, I can point out that I was pregnant with him, to help him understand the consequences of not using reliable birth control, and also being in a unhealthy relationship. I have to deal with a man that ruined my life for the rest of my life...

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.. It has me. I was lucky that my ex didn't kill me. Many years I thought he would. The sad thing is four months after my second child was born, my looser ex had another child, whose life he ruined. The mom is so stupid that she stuck around hoping he will change, and they can have happily ever after... With men like that, there is no happily ever after, just heartache and pain. In not moving on with her life, and finding a healthy relationship, or receiving counseling, she has chosen to also destroy her daughter's life. In a few years, her daughter will be knocked up by some looser that is just like her dad... How sad for her..

The difference between her and me, is I didn't want my children to grow up and be abusers, or think it is okay not to be a dad.. I wanted better for myself, because I deserved better, and my kids deserved to live in a safe environment. My oldest son remembers the abuse, and he is having emotional problems because of it. So, for the four years that he dealt with his father and the damage that was done to him because I chose to bred with a abusive low life. Can you imagine the trauma that his daughter is going through?!

I am the lucky one that escape my abuser...She still has to deal with his drama and abuse... : (

I wish I would have Sp. I was terrified of him, and what he would do to my children. Law enforcement is a joke in LA county, and if I had blown his head off, I would have ended up in jail, and my kids wouldn't of had a mother. He will get his, I believe in karma, and he will one day understand and deal with the consequences of what he did. He has to live with the fact that his oldest son hates him, and will never forgive him. I cannot even imagine how it would feel to have your kids loathe you. I suppose he will. It made me stronger, and one day when my kids are raised, I want to go back to school to help abused women.

Drug test everyone who receives EBT.

Make adjustments to the EBT system: make it like WIC. Restrict purchases to only foods with nutritional value.

Audit anyone who seems suspicious.

Leave the EBT funds for people who really need them. People who work hard, yet still don't have enough to eat.

The women I was talking about had a new Escalate, this ladida was before the recession, and my kids were young. The ignorant [censor] I was referring to had a drug dealing boyfriend, that was making bank. How ethically can you possibly think that someone that is driving a brand new Escalate could possibly be eligible for benefits! Her was brand new, with the thousand dollars rims on every wheel, and everything! She is one of those women, that uses the welfare system! I don't think a twenty year old benzs in anyway constitutes the same as a brand new Escalate! An Escalate is the vehicle that OJ drove! That type of car is worth some money! My mom worked for the district this happened at and I did hear her life story! How is it okay, for anyone to use foul language in front of my three children, cussing and acting ignorant?! Yelling on the top of her lungs like a total uneducated trash! Not to mention her own six year old child! That day, my kid was ill, and I was taking him home! I had to hear her total lack of consideration for anyone else in that office! She so overwhelmed the receptionist, I had to wait until her tirade was over before I could sign out my kid from school! It isn't ever okay to cuss and yell, and scare young children with her foul mouth!

How is that an attack on you? I don't like people who use the welfare system unethically like that! I to, am honest about everything, because I don't want to end up in jail! I am obviously not doing well in this recession either!~ Or did you miss the part where I am unemployed?! So, yes this recession has effected me, and I am all for using whatever resources are available. How do you know, if I have not gotten food stamps at one time of my life too?! I am getting my health insurance from the state of California. If, I didn't live with my boyfriend, I would be getting food stamps too! Stop assuming I am attacking every low income person, that is having a hard time. I know lots of people who have been on welfare, food stamps, and medikaid! I have friends that have used it to go to school and better themselves, and I am all for that! I just had a friend graduate from college and get her B.S. in business administration. I had my ex leave me with two kids I had to support. There have been many times that I was on Caloptima or Medi-cal! At one point in my life I was on welfare, because my ex boyfriend was stalking me and would get me fired from every job I would get! If it wasn't for welfare, my and my children would have starved, and had no place to live! Eventually, I found work at home, so he couldn't do that anymore!

What I cannot stand, is people like that women. Who thinks the world owes her something. If her and her low life boyfriend are making bank on drugs, than I am sure that he can support his girlfriend and her daughter! It is a slap in the face to have to deal with a low life like that to families that are truly struggling to survive. Or do you think it is okay that she was getting with welfare fraud?!

Your judging me, so let me tell you something. My ex-boyfriend was extremely abusive. I lived in fear of my boyfriend killing me and my children. On top of that, try his stupid [censor] getting me fired from every job I could get, and dealing with him beating me up in front of my young kids! So, your not the only one that had it tough in life! And yes, I did call the police, who refused to do anything! Welfare was my means to pay my rent and bills at that time, until I was safe from him! So, your judging me, let me make this clear, I have had hard times too... So get off your high horse!

actually, statistically speaking the recession is over and ended in 2009. The Index is above the recession level of -0.7 but below its long run growth rate. Thus, the economy is growing but slowly.

my mom pays my bills and rent at this time because i live in a very small city with very little opportunity, sometime ago i was let go from my job because the company left the area. i have been receiving benefits and feel that i would starve without them. i don't know how anyone makes ends meet these days its very difficult. i am very grateful to receive assistance at this time and don't feel i am taking advantage of anything, i too am honest on my paperwork that is required in making the decision for who is and is not eligible to receive the benefits. i drive a benz too! now what? it's a 1997 and my MOM payed for it years and years ago! so don't always judge a book by it's cover, makes one appear to be ignorant and you really don't want that do you? good luck to us all during these difficult times, we are just beginning to see how bad things are going to be, you'll see...and the very people here complaining will (hopefully not)likely end up using their own EBT cards, be careful and THINK b4 you talk or comment about thing, one good characteristic in people is the power of being objective and unbias, try it you'll liike it. peace.

I am not sure... It was a Esplanade! It was more her complete rudeness to the staff at the school, and her complaining about a free lunch. My kids also receive free lunch. It is the same as if you pay for it. It isn't like you stand in a different line or something! She was one of those ignorant, rude, stupid people you want to slap. Yelling her ignorant mouth, to the school staff in front of anyone who happens to be in the office! She was trying to insinuate that because her child got free lunch, her kid didn't get the same quality food as a child that pays for it. That isn't true at all! Schools really try and eliminate embarrassment for children that get free lunch by using codes, or their school ID number. In kindergarten that is one of the first things they want kids to learn. In CA, is strict about receiving food stamps. If she had reported that car, than she wouldn't be able to receive food stamps. I am on Caliptima right now. Which is Orange County's version of medikaid. They want to know everything about you. They found some stocks my dad had for my oldest son! I had no idea about them. When I lost my job, and tried to see if I qualified for food stamps, my income did. But since my boyfriend made to much money, I couldn't receive them. She was lying somehow... Hope one of the office staff turned her stupid [censor] in for welfare fraud. She deserved it!

maybe they got the car before they got the food stamps. if you make payments on a car and are honest about it to DSHS you can still qualify for food stamps. I'm sure she had the car first. I can totally see how that made you feel that way. but in all fairness you never know. maybe they lived in that car

You can make complaints against people abusing the welfare system. In CA the government really started cracking down on that. Look on line for a 1800 number on the welfare fraud, usually there is a website, or on the welfare website for your state. When I lost my job, I actually can qualify for food stamps. I was honest about how much my boyfriend made, and thus couldn't get them. In these hard economic times, many families rely on Food Stamps.

I don't agree with families ill using food stamps, it is wrong, especially when the tax payers are flipping the bill. Food stamps should be used for healthy food, that benefit everyone in the family. I don't believe that even with a EBT card that food stamp receptionists could get any kind of alcohol. In CA, that is forbidden, and you wouldn't be able to use your EBT card for that purpose.

mommykids2010,
There is nothing wrong with using what resources you have to to feed your family! When times are rough, you use whatever means to feed your babies. God bless you and your family!

SP,
I also agree with you, when my son was younger, he went to school with this little girl whose mom had a expensive car. But yet she was receiving food stamps, welfare, and her daughter got free lunch at school. One day her ignorant [censor] came into the school, driving in her 100, 000 dollar car, and in front of everyone in the office made a complaint about the "free lunch" her daughter was receiving and how she would get a stomach ache over it! How is it she can afford a car like that, and yet be on welfare, food stamps, and free lunch?! I working my [censor] off to support myself, my kids, and I drove a run down Jeep!? I have no idea why someone didn't turn her welfare fraud [censor] in! If I knew her I would have! What a [censor]! I don't understand how people like that live with themselves?!

Food stamps do serve a wonderful purpose, it provides food for people in need of it. I do agree that it should be more regulated. I am glad that I live in a country that provides this. It would suck to live in a country were if your poor and cannot afford food, you starve...

Hi.

There was a time my husband lost his job from the school system and I was only working 20 hours a week, and an hour drive to there. We had maybe $50 a week to feed 4 people, sometimes less.

I found out about Food Stamps, applied and got them. Thank You God. I was so excited to take that card and buy food for my family.

After several years, we still qualify and both work FULL TIME jobs. So we accept the food stamps. We don't eat out but have high daycare costs, so the food money wouldn't be there w/out our EBT card.

I am so thankful we have money every month. We still add to it with our own money and budget it out.

It is sad when people are abusing it but we do not.

well. i can see how you would be upset that you are paying for someone else's lobster. I'm not saying be foolish with the money. I'm just saying that if i were down and out and felt like i couldn't get out of the [censor] hole that is my life. I might be inclined to purchase a good meal once in a while to try and make myself feel better. poor people aren't UNDESERVING or less of human beings. maybe some of them are, but again, i'm not referring to professional moochers. and STEALTH...sweetie...really you are a bitter woman. you do a whole LOT of complaining on this board and position yourself to be this high and mighty perfect person. i'm sure that if we were to investigate you, beyond your attitude, we would find some large dirty secrets and wrongdoings...

foodforthough you are so right life is not fair. there are people who abuse the system and there is nothing that you can do about it, so why sit and crab about something you are never going to change. if people buy junk that is there problem if they do not want to eat healthy and take care of themselves. they get a certain amount of money and once it is gone too bad for them they should have made better choices. it is not like when they buy lobster they get more money.

personally, i think that there should be limits to what they can get. honestly, the crap food is cheaper in America and so it makes sense to buy it because you get more for your money. I don't care if you get hot food or canned, but i do think you should get food. however, I also think that if you are on food stamps your life probably isn't that great. even though i think it's in your best interest to get food, Ultimately i think you should get whatever makes you happy. If you have money and you're scamming the system, well...then i'm sure it'll come back and bite you in the butt some day. White people buy crap with their food stamps too. just cuz you don't see it doesn't mean they don't. there are many things in this world to be mad about. life isn't fair. My house depreciated 70, 000 since i bought it... I cant do anything with it and there are people who don't make any money who live in new apartments bigger and nicer than my house. oh. well. ebt. oh well. you never know...maybe you'll be on EBT in the future and have a hankering for a lobster.

You need to shut the hell up. I am 25 a mother of two and my husband works 57 hours a week, and I go to school full time trying to get my nursing degree so I can better my childrens lives. So I do get EBT to helo us make ends meet while I am in school. So screw all of you that want to judge me. My husband pays his taxes too. Not all people are just sitting on their [censor] sucking off the goverment. I am a good person, I take care of my children and volunteer in my community. You people should feel ashamed for making people like me about cry everytime people see me using EBT. I know they are judging me and have no idea my story. You close minded people need to wake up and look in the mirror at yourself and stop judging people you dont know... Oh and just so you know I only buy healthy food so prepare wholesome meals for my children so [censor] OFF!

YouthInRevolt91 has way too much time on his hands for writing novel size comments about food stamp use. I smell a 19 yr old virgin aspiring to be a pharmacist in Walmart. Your 19 yrs old go have fun while your still young! Quit worrying about issues that will always be there. However, Ill give you a thumbs up for putting yourself through school and working hard.

Anyways, That couple that used food stamps to purchase crabs made me very irritated regarding their stupid "guvament" comment. I do agree that food stamps should be regulated like wic. Maybe that would eliminate ridiculous spending.

@youth I wasn't referring to you, so before u get into your "youthful" [censor] fit do YOUR research first before getting "hostile" I don't give a [censor] what u have to say which is why I got extremely bored reading half of the stuff you wrote. You reffered about billions being allotted, The taxes coming out of your little salary that's paying for your community college probably isn't going to welfare. So why put yourself into the argument? If anything I respect any kind of proffession a person does to make a living. So to sum it up, my comment was referring to someone on the second page bashing someone utilizing food stamps. So quit being the "defender of the people" and making it sound like your including everyone on "your" side. This is the first time I been on this site, so whatever reply u wish to throw back, don't expect me to come back and read it or even give a [censor]. I'm not looking to debate on food stamps. Good luck with your future and wish u success.

Who cares about this food stamp and ebt talk. I'm sure the lack of luxury in there lives provokes them to buy a little junk food here and there. Besides i don't think a person who works at a "grocery store" has any merit to judge a person on their financial situation. World would be a better place if we didn't get too distracted on little things like this. If you seriously did the math, $200 of that government expenditure doesn't really effect anyone, tax allocation on wars, prisoners having a bigger budget than students are more serious complaints. So for the person who started this topic, direct your attention to something more meaningful. The rich man studies every entrance and exit of every penny, the poor don't. Leave it at that.

My goodness! The ignorance of some of you people is UNREAL! I am SURE there are those out there who do abuse the system. It's true that everyone has an opinion but everyone also has their own story. It is WRONG it judge others using EBT on what they are wearing, driving or how many kids they have.

My husband was recently laid off because the government cutting contractor jobs. He is a veteran and has served his country in 2 tours to fight for your complaining a$$es. I am a full-time student and Mom of four small children, aged 5 and under. With no income coming in and rent we still have to pay...YES, we applied for Food stamps and got an EBT card.

When my husband was working he was making decent money giving us the ability to buy nicer things. So now that he lost his job, does that mean we need to sell our car and clothes...NO! The DSS gives EBT allowances based on your current income. You don't tell them how much you need. The money is put on the card and is there until you use it. So are you telling me if there was enough on a card to feed your family well...you wouldn't use it? If there is enough money on someone's card to buy crab legs, who cares, it's really none of your business. We have both paid taxes for years and WILL find other jobs and will go off of food assistance soon enough.

I shouldn't feel ashamed of using EBT benefits to feed my family WHATEVER I want. However, it's judgmental egotistical people like some in this forum that make those who need help feel like crap. We are human beings, people, lets have a little empathy for one another. I hope, for your sake, you never have the unfortunate situation of having to use these benefits and have nasty spirited people like you judge you. God is the ultimate judge and he is the one you will have to stand before one day and explain your disgusting behavior toward people. That includes those who are racist AND those who judge those in need. GROW UP and worry about yourselves!

I dont abuse it but people who judge what other people are buying with their bridge card really need a life my god, dont u have anything better to worry about. all i see on here is racists a bunch of idiots with nothing else to to do. there are rapist, pedophiles, murderers and so on. And if you want to complain about this dont bring race gender or peoples fat [censor] kids into it how dare you. Those are children that have no choice how they are raised or who their parents are. what a piece of work some of you are.

I am on both sides. I DO have EBT, and have since I got laid off for not being able come back to work after having my baby girl. My husband is working, and PAYING his taxes. We have one nice car and one beater. We had the nice one since before when i was working a ton of hours and paid it with cash. Now its worth a ton less than when we bought it, and we cant afford to let my daughter ride in anything that if we sold it to get money, we could replace it. Does that mean i should feel bad for riding pretty? No, its safe and gas effecent. I have sold half my wardrobe, and consign her clothes as they become too small, and buy used. SHould i buy crap clothes because it makes people uncomfortable i got my designer outfit for less than they paid for a shirt? No. Should i feel bad because my very sweet parents worry about me and got me a FREE nice phone and i pay them the whole $5 a month to have it so we can be safe? nope! On the aspect of WHAT you should buy, I do think there should be more tighter rules, but only when it comes to certain things. I do believe cooking sherry, energy drinks, ect should not be acceptable and its NOT. It is TANIF or whatever you call it in your state that is also on the EBT card. In my state at lest you can not buy hot food, liquor, energy drinks, ect.
I do think alot (not majority) cheat. I have seen it, and hate it. BUT what is the government going to do. They cant "big brother" us and this isnt a perfect world. It would cost them more to watch over and make sure every bite goes in our mouth and we arent spending a penny on non-necessities.
I have a friend that works part time (all she can find) has a hungry toddler, and only gets $100 a month. She has to eat the junk thats a dollar a pop, and feed her daughter the good stuff. I do "cheat" my card a little by having her babysit for an hour a week to go and buy her necessities (she wont take for free so she straightens my house and watches the kids, but i would do it anyway). I budget my card enough to help her out, and others think its "cheating". I have even been told by a family member that she was "paying my childcare" People dont look into the eyes of someone just wanting to feed their family, and help them. They look at their cart and say, "just another abuser"
Why dont we spend more time finding ways to lower the price of healthy food? maybe a few more ppl will be healthier, and a little less criticism from bystanders.

I couldn't help signing up on this website to say this: I am 21 years old, in college and work at academy. Not the best job but the economy sucks and so does our president. So any ways..I have a one year old, Abel, and his father does not pay child support and not a penny since he was born. I have been on the "system" about it but they just can't seem to find him even though i told them a countless amount of times that he is in the military which SHOULD make it easier to find him, but i guess not. Ok so, here is my point! I am on food stamps and so I know the system better than the bystanders and you may be surprised to know that I totally agree with the complaint! It is very true that people march into the food stamp offices with their iphones and platinum gold jewelry (and teeth may I add) and are allowed to go in the "emergency foodstamp line" because they do not have a JOB. So the people that are well able to work but just don't, have the privilege of going before the working people. What the system should do is to set boundaries and rules. When someone is jobless, the case workers do not ask why and they don't seem to even care, they just up your food stamps by a few hundred dollars! They should allow ONLY food to be purchased with it, and like wic they should show the foods you cannot buy or at least put a limit on how much candy you buy etc. Also they need to give us a certain amount of time to find a job and not just allow people to go on and on and on jobless with 5 kids or even one kid! There should be mandatory check ups and maybe even proof that the jobless people did apply at least one place a day or even a week! Or SOMETHING!? If they really do need the food stamps they would not mind abiding by these rules. I know I wouldn't.

Food stamps to these people are nothing.
It's free money to these people that can abolutely work!
They are healthy living people with a family and can speak correct english to get there [censor] off the couch and work.
But they don't.. why you ask? because they know they already get free money from the government.
And here we are working 40-80 hours a week to give away money to these disturbing people?
Can something be done here? Because I didn't go to school and find a job and work to support my family and to support the government to give away my benefits and my money to people that can be working just as hard.
Food stamps/EBT should be given out to people who are in disabilty, unemployment process, etc, not to people who can work!
Something has to be done. Food stamps should be all cut off or given to certain people.

Well here is how I see it. I worked up until I was 44 yrs old, had a terrible accident, ended up on food stamps and ssdi. Well I hated it so I went back to work because, still had a mind and arms and hands, maybe in a wheel chair but still able to do some work!

While on foodstamps, I saw it too. Big huge people standing in line before me with the new ebt card?/? is that what they are called? Anyway, back to huge big people buying all kinds of crap. It made me want to vomit most of the time. I did not even buy crap like that when I did not have food stamps. I don't think its just black people though. There were some mighty hefty whites, mexican, etc. You see everyone wants a handout from the government these days. And yes, most think they deserve it.

That is so what is wrong with our country. There are all kinds of jobs to do, americans simply don't want to do them. I think its pathetic. I so agree with her comment. People should be ashamed they have to get assistance not be proud of it! My God my parents would never think that was something to be proud of. Sitting around day and nite, eating the food the government bought you and your mind rotting away to nothing. Spoiled little americans, get your [censor] off the couch and DO SOMETHING.

Haven't most people paid taxes at one point in their lives? Even most people on the Food Stamp Program pay taxes, so why cry about your tax dollars? Furthermore don't we get that money back the following year anyway? Why should I feel I am better than someone because I pay taxes...? What would you prefer your tax money do? Isn't helping people buy food a good cause? I am so confused! I agree there are some people who abuse the system and although these people take pride in the way they carry themselves (wearing nice clothes) I'm sure tha doesn't negate the fact that they are working or trying to work to support the children they have at home.

Okay, so the point is people, when it comes down to pride or food, what would you choose. I could give a good F about what somebody thinks of me. My children come before anything, and anybody else. Those same people who are giving you grief about feeding your family wont lift a finger to help you if you told them you opted not to take the foodstamps. Survival, think about it!
