Firestone Complete Auto Care - overcharge

Shopping trip to Hagerstown interrupted by a split rear heating hose. Told the mechanic/rep at desk that it was a ruptured hose and where as I had looked under the Tracker/vehicle and saw the problem. Told there was no problem, was going to get it taken care of very quickly, next car in slots, and would have a writeup on it in a moment. "Just sign here so that we can have a look at it". Encyclopedia salesman move of holding down paper for me so that I could easily sign OK for them to work on it...to see my signature applied to a charge as part of my final bill of 19.95 for PRESSURE CHECK on a vehicle I had just told him had no fluid in it, and had a split in rear hose of which I specifically asked to be replaced. The speedy job I was promised, being next vehicle in line, with the rep knowing my sense of urgency being that I had 90 minutes to pick up my children from school 30 minutes away, turned into hearing, after 30 minutes of wait...that my part, a common hose, would arrive at the shop within about 30 minutes. To be brief; I ended up paying $90.91 for the $17+ hose and labor. Once the part got to the shop, it took the mechanic a little over 7 minutes to install the hose and fill my radiator/system with recycled ($10) fluid. An 1/8 hour of work resulted in $50. of charges.

Ultimately my children had to wait after school with their principal, and I learned another of lifes little lessons. Get a full quote first with a time guarantee and never at Firestones in Hagerstown.

Four Spark Plugs
Four Spark Plug Wires
Fuel Injector Cleaner
$381.90

That's right, $381.90 was charged to change 4 spark plugs, 4 spark plug wires, and to add fuel injector cleaner by Firestone.

Yesterday, December 9, 2009, my fiancee brought her Hyundai Elantra to the Firestone Complete Auto Care in Covington, KY, because her engine was running rough. She's been a regular customer of theirs for 10 years and they had taken advantage of her in the past. But, yesterday, they put the computer analyzer machine on her car, then determined the problem.

They charged $21.99 for "Vehicle Inspection", minus a "discount" of $1.10. Then they charged her $79.99 for "Computerized Engine Analysis". Spark plugs (4) $5.99 each, $23.96 total. Ignition wires, $89.90. Labor - spark plugs $42.50. Labor - ignition wires $42.50, minus $5.69 and minus $4.25 (special discount).

Then "Ever-Wear Fuel System Maintenance", $39.99 (fuel injector cleaner) and "Fuel System Service Labor", $55.00, minus $8.42 and minus $11.58.

Total parts - $139.74
Total labor - $221.05
Supplies - $12.01
Tax - $9.10

Total $381.90

When my fiancee came home last night, she wasn't happy and I asked her what happened. She handed me the invoice, # 079012, and after I looked at it for several minutes, I called their "Customer Retention" toll-free number, [protected], and spoke with a young lady, Maricel, who is in Canada. I gave her all of the information. She attempted to resolve this by putting me on hold and calling the store, but the store manager was not there. After she got back on the phone with me, I gave her instructions that in no way did I want this resolved through the store, but only by Firestone Corporate Headquarters. I asked her to let me know that this conversation was recorded and to make sure that it was heard by management. She assured me that their Corporate Headquarters would call me "within two business days". But, I decided that I couldn't wait. So, I looked up their website and discovered who is the president of retail and called. The person I tried to reach, Larry Magee, was in Japan, so his assistant handed me off to another person, Keith Rahonin (I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling).

Mr. Keith Rahonin stated that these costs were in the same price range as their competitors. He also stated that they have a full year warranty on their parts. But, so what! Spark plugs these days normally last much longer than one year! I've had the same spark plugs in my car for three years and counting! Firestone Corporation refused to do anything about these ridiculous charges. So, I told Keith that I would bring the invoice to Mr. Howard Ain of local Channel 12, who does his "Trouble Shooter" segment and also to Mr. John Matarese of WCPO Channel 9, who does his "On Your Side" segment. I also told him that he should take this seriously, since my fiancee just recently met with both men in relation to another scam (see below). There's approximately 10 Firestone repair centers in the Greater Cincinnati area and they should see their business adversely affected due to their outrageous costs for simple repairs. Hell, I can get a timing belt or both CV joints replaced for about the same money they charged for just

4 spark plugs
4 spark plug wires
Fuel system cleaner

My fiancee also had a problem with another company called National Dealers Warranty Inc (Google them), a total scam company that takes your money, but does not honor their extended warranty contract, and she contacted John Matarese with WCPO, Channel 9, who does his "Don't Waste Your Money" segment, and also Howard Ain of Channel 12, who does his "Trouble Shooter" segment, and did interviews for both of them. Howard Ain's report broadcast today, 12/10/09.

If Firestone does not resolve this situation, I will broadcast this repair bill in all of the Greater Cincinnati area for all to see and do as much damage to their business as possible.

Firestone Complete Auto Care will rip you off at every chance they get. So will National Dealers Warranty Inc. Avoid them both.
