I strongly suggest that people close their accounts immediately they realise they've been caught up in this scam. I spoke to my bank and we agreed it was the best thing to do. I also went to the police, who weren't much/couldn't help, but have sent a scam report to the UK government consumer site, and they'll pass it on to Trading Standards.
Closing your account down is a pain, but it's the only safe way to ensure these bastards don't get their hands on (any more of) your money. If it's going to take a day or two to be finalised, then make sure your bank blocks your card, too. For me, it's been a lesson I will never forget. We keep getting told to be careful with our bank details, and I know now how careful I have to be!
