Dollar Rent A Car charges taken from us for something we were never asked about

Hired car 25th March-8th April 2017

I recently returned from a trip to LA where I'd hired a car out there from Dollar for 2 weeks. Upon collecting the car which I'd already paid for online, I was asked to sign to add my husband as a driver and was also asked to sign to allow a deposit to be taken from my card which would be refunded on return of the vehicle. I had to sign a little screen.
We were asked the usual questions about various extras to which we said no to all, as we always do.
When we returned the hire car we were given a receipt which we assumed was showing the amount taken for the deposit which would be returned. However on further inspection after having received an email as well, we realised that Dollar had taken £200 from us for Road side assistance which we were never asked about and would have declined if we had been.
Sadly for us we found a receipt in our bag highlighted with my signature in it saying the roadside assistance and something called PEC had been accepted (funny as we'd not been given the choice) but at no point do I recall seeing anything highlighted when I signed as my attention would have been drawn to it. I suspect it was highlighted afterwards. All I know is that we were asked to sign for the deposit and the second driver, we were never told we were signing for anything else. Dollar of course are being extremely unhelpful as we signed it and that's that as far as they are concerned.
I think they know that people are stressed and tired after having just come off an 11 hour flight and totally take advantage of that situation to make themselves some extra money. I think it's disgusting and will certainly never use them again.
I searched google and it seems it isn't just a one off issue. I just want people to be aware so they don't get scammed like we did. Sadly, it wasn't the end to our holiday we hoped for.

After especially poor customer service in your Washington National location, I filled out a customer service survey. A Charles Paige responded from Hertz the parent company with an offer of $200 worth of coupons for another car rental in the future. I was very pleased with your offer.
However, no coupons have ever arrived. I have tried to contact Mr. Paige as well as the location manager Tangela Simmons several times but have not received a return call or email.

I appreciate your attention to this matter. I simply want the coupons as promised.

Dollar Rent A Car fuel charge unauthorised on my credit card

I hired a car in Los Angeles LAX. I did not agree to a refuel charge. On returning the car, the inspector did not want the receipt of my refuelling from a gas station within 10 miles. He noted the gas was full and said he didn't need the receipt. When given the all good, I was directed to the shuttle bus area with my two kids. Whilst waiting there, I read the paperwork again and saw again that it said to provide a receipt . I walked all the way back and demanded that he take the receipt and put it with my paperwork . When I noticed the $50.34 AUD charge and $1.51 AUD international fee charge on my credit card on 20 March I rang your customer service number and spoke to Donna and she assured me the money would be promptly refunded. It has not been refunded and I have now sent two emails about this that have been unanswered. I would like someone to contact asap and organise immediately then return of $51.85 to my credit card. Dollar Rent A Car no car available after booking

ON 3-1-2017, I booked a premium car, upon arrival I was told that the car was not available. The rep proceeded to ignore me as I stood at the counter for almost 30 min. Finally she decided to downgrade my rental for more money. I asked for a Manager or Supervisor, but was told there wasn't one available. your service at Memphis Int. Airport is ridiculous and very unprofessional.

Dollar Rent A Car auto insurance

I rented the car through Travelocity for six days (midsize) for a total of $168. Charged to my debit promptly. When I picked up the car I made it clear that I didn't want additional insurance since I have that benefit for full coverage on my license.
I declined any and they said they'd have to put a $280 additional charge while I had the car and it would be
reimbursed. The woman spoke with an accent so I had a bit of a hard time understanding everything, but
made it clear that I didn't want extras. I signed where she told me and off I went. When I returned the car the guy at the intake garage printed off a piece of paper that read $243 charge (Atlanta airport). I was under the
impression that they'd charge my card for the difference of the $168 I already paid and the $243 on the receipt. Nope, they charged the $243 two days later it showed up on my account. On the same receipt it showed everything I declined, but the really expensive insurance I supposedly accepted. When I called I was told that I had signed an agreement and there was nothing I could do. I asked to speak to a supervisor and of course was told that wasn't an option since they have a signed agreement. I asked for an email copy of said agreement and I couldn't really understand her very well either. Talked fast and low. It sounds like this is the standard operating procedure. Why would I rent a car for six days and pay a grand total of $411? That' more than my airfare. For that price I could have driven down and back with my own car and sucked up the additional 10 hours.

Dollar Rent A Car not giving exact car or similar car and enforcing to hire a higher class car with over charge

I made rezevation (itinerary number: [protected]) from Dollar through your web site I paid for compact car as Ford Focus but when I went there, one guy told me that they dont have Ford Focus and he offered me "Nissan Versa" with two doors as compavt car. I said that this is not compact car and we are 3 people. He insisted on that Versa is compact car. Normally; if they dont have compact car; they would offer higher class as free of charge. Due to the smallness of Versa, he offered me Camry with additional 60 USD/day. I should accept because we are 3 people although the price is very high. Then I paid additional 180 USD for renting Camry. Please contact with them to give 180 usd back.

Dollar Rent A Car overcharged from what I was quoted

I had a reservation for $37.69 for one day of a Mid-size - Toyota Corolla or Similar and with all other stuff the charge was to be $58.25. My pick up was LAX (Los Angeles, CA) and drop off at FAT (Fresno, CA).

When I returned the car I was charged $175.32 (Car for $42, Service Charge $91.2 plus all other stuff).

Dollar Rent A Car lost item that was found went "missing"

Left expensive sunglasses in car and realized it right away. Left a note for them to call me when they opened (had a real early flight) and they did and confirmed they had them from the car. Once i got home i called to confirm they still had them (i described them) and they said i had to send a prepaid box which i did. I got the box back and they send me some very cheap broken glasses that were not mine. When i spoke with the female supervisor and explained how i was mad and asked what she would do her response was "i shouldnt have lost them in the first place" and she just kept repeating that like i child. No one else says they can do anything.

Dollar Rent A Car scam! lied to!

I prepaid for my dollar rental on Nov. 21st. I purposely did this on the Dollar website so if I had any issues I could discuss with them directly. When I arrived to the counter to pick my car the attendant asked me if I had insurance I said yes from my credit card. She said THERE IS A NEW LAW IN TEXAS SAYING YOU HAVE TO HAVE SECONDARY INSURANCE ON TOP OF THE INSURANCE YOU HAVE WITH A CREDIT CARD. I asked her how much that would cost. She said with the car rental fee, it would cost a total of $277. She said I was not charged yet for the car rental and it would be a total of $277 only. She also said your credit card will only show a charge of $277. I said well that is only a difference of $141 more than what I agreed to pay so i said ok. I also asked about tolls...if I could purchase a toll tag. She said no they will charge you in the end.

A few months later I got charged $136 for the rental then $277 for additional fees and $164 for toll fees. I was told the contract states if a toll tag is not purchased you will be charged a $15 fee on top of each toll.

I later found out she lied to me. There is no law stating you need secondary insurance. I later found out she makes commission on additional fees and that is why she probably lied to me.

I am currently contesting the charge with my credit card but it makes me worry who else she has done this to. Dollar would not let me speak to the location and told me since I signed it there is nothing that can be done. The dollar attendant scammed me.

Dollar Rent A Car car rental

One day rent 01/12/2017 for a compact car to tour the island. They operate a pick-up and drop off service from our hotel. We were picked up from in Old San Juan by Gabriel. He could speak english but hardly communicated throughout our journey and, more importantly, barely communicated throughout the rental process back at the Dollar office. We had to ask questions about the rental, for example Toll charges, fuel policy. It was quickly apparent that he was just rude. He didn't even answer some of our questions and ignored us. When we asked when we could bring the car back he said we had rented at 9.47 so we bring it back at 9.47 the next day. We said we may want to off-hire later that day and he said that he closed at 5pm. We asked if there was a key drop and he said no, he had to be open. When we said that we had never heard of a car rental company working from 9-5 he said that we could take it back to the airport but they would not return us to our hotel. A cab would cost us $30. He checked the car for dents and fuel. The agreement was full and full on return. As we drove off we noticed that the fuel gauge was down by two bars. When we told him he said it had been noted. Because of the late start in our day we did in fact return the car at 4.55 that day. He never spoke. We said that we had filled the car with fuel and reminded him that it was two bars down on collection. He said nothing. We waited by the shuttle bus for our return to our hotel. He went into the office. He then returned and asked us to also come in to complete the paperwork. If he had asked us initially to follow him in we would have done so. He did not ask us if all had been ok or if we had had a nice day and when we asked for the shuttle back to our hotel he looked shocked as he had gone past his 5pm close time. He did take us back and again never spoke. We will never rent off this company again. This man Gabriel was the rudest person we have met in a long time. If we could have walked out in the morning and gone somewhere else to rent we would have but the office is outside the tourist area and it was not possible to find another company at short notice.

Dollar Rent A Car unethical behavior - charging insurance even though I clearly informed counter agent I did not want it

On september 16 I rented a vehicle from dollar. I clearly told the counter agent I did not want insurance - in fact I told her that I had checked with my personal auto insurance and was covered by them for rentals. She said she understood. Even though I had prepaid when I made the reservation online she said she did need to run my credit card in case of additional charges. They charged me an additional $186 including the insurance on top of the payment I had already made. At the time of this transaction there was a line of 50 people - all carrying baggage and trying to get out of the airport. I realize I should have looked at the contract but the agent had been very assuring about my requests. My efforts to discuss this with the company have been useless.

Dollar Rent A Car toll charges rort

We rented a hire car from JFK from 28 October until 4 November. They offered a Toll Charge device at the time for an extra charge of over $100. The Assistant at Dollar advised us against this as he said the tolls would not com to that amount. We paid cash at every toll point we went through. We returned to Australia in mid November. On 14 December Dollar Car rentals charged our credit card 143.90AUD. A letter arrived at our address yesterday claiming we did not pay any tolls. I am in the process of attempting to retrieve these funds but this is not the point. I want to bring some sort of charge against this company to stop them exploiting tourists. It is fraud and it is theft.

Dollar Rent A Car unethical behavior

I rented from Dollar at Ohare and gurned down the extra insurance and they put it on and charged me an additional $200.00 which I got removed by the nice people at Hertz in St. Charles, Il which is a great office/company store!
The people at Ohare gave the car I was supposed to get to the customer ahead of me so I e brought the car back and we switcned bags.
Soon as we finished switching bag's, someone came out and said we switched cars so I took my bags out and we switched them back the way they were. Very unprofessional group and that started what turned out to be a nightmare! !
I asked the girl what the ugly metal mass was on the inside of the windshield and she said for tolls and was told to leave as cars were behind me.
About a week or so .ater I received a letter asking for $97.05 for tools.
$7.05 for tools and $90.00 for administration fees. Now, if someone had told me I owed $7.05 in tolls I would have paid it on the spot but rather than do, I was a a victum of highway robbery and elder abuse as well.
I was on my way to Wisconsin as my youngest sister was on her death bed, and did die the day before I leff for home in California.

In looking at the complaints Dollar has against them I wonde why a company like Hertz would have bought such a company! !

I'm 79 years old, living on Social Security and a $97.00 hit before Christmas hurts, especially this time of year I will also see what our family lawyer would suggest but right away I will alert everyone here in Sun City to be very careful not to rent frome Dollar and have already had a person switch from Dollar to Enterprise and there's more coming or going elsewhere,

Dollar Rent A Car overcharged for car repairing and theft

I rent a car from dubai international airport terminal 2 on 11th of october and returned on 15th.

İ paid extra money for full coverage and there was small scratches around all of the car when I rent the car.
I didn't hit or cause any damage to the car until I returned it, and when I gave the car back your staff said everything is ok and made me sign on a tablet.
But they charged me 2.000 turkish lira (2400 aed-700 dollars) for those scratches that I didn't caue. i called your branch a airport terminal 2 and they said ''i did it'', and I had to make a police report ; if I hit the car I would call the police and make a report because I paid extra money for the full insurance to not pay anything for these kind of things.
And your staff on the phone hung up the phone because of there was a costumer in there and he said he was going to call me in 10 minutes and he never called me back (it has been 2 days)
I am attaching the agreement to this mail, please be institutional and professional and return my money back on my credit card.
And I forgot a bag in the car at airport there was an expensive professional digital canon camera and 2 piece of women clothes that I bought as a present from guess, and the said they didnt find anything in the car but I am sure I left it in the car !

Dollar Rent A Car admin fee for toll road

I wanted to file a official complaints about the Admin fees they charged for using a toll road. I haven't been notified about the $15 admin fees per transaction. There was a toll charges of $1.35 and they charged me $46.35. There was no toll booth on the road otherwise I would have paid that amount right away. I reported that to rental car staff and they said that it would be charged later. I checked my credit card today and they are saying that I drove 3 times on toll road for $0.45 cents per trip and $15 was the admin fees. I feel like I have been robbed on road by them.
I request you to look into this case and process to refund the admin fees. The transaction ID is 24493986304026462818941.

Complain about Dollar Rental at LAX
Hello there, I have rented a car through Rentalcars.com from Dollar Rental at LAX. My Booking Reference number is [protected]. When I came to pick up the car, a lady gave me an invoice for additional 257$ that she claimed I have to pay for picking up the car. I requested clarifications for this invoice, she tried to show as if I have paid Rentalcars only a portion of the required payment. When I insisted for full clarifications, she said it is a road break down insurance and for a Tank of gas. When I refused to sign, she took her revenge on me, by not letting me pickup a car from the ECAR line, but by bringing me a key for the smallest and probably the worst car they had, in which I could not fit my big suitcase in the trunk. When I told her that I reserved a car to be able to fit one big and one small suitcase, she said that will cost another 10 Dollars a day and if I am not happy than I should complain to Rentalcars.com. The steering wheel of the small car I was given was vibrating when I drove around the 60 Mi/Hr on the highway. (This car was replaced for me at LAS office, by me picking up the car I wanted from the ECAR line). Please help, for this happened to me only at the Dollar Rental at LAX office, and it is the second time I had been intimidated if I do not buy the extra insurance from them. I picked up a car from LAX office twice and in both cases I had an issue. It did not happen to me when I picked up cars from Dollar rental in San Francisco, Tucson AZ., or LAS airports. I do not know whether the LAX office has something against Israelis or it is just their method to punish those who do not buy extra insurance from them. Please investigate this issue and let me know the outcome. Thank you, Avi

I hope somebody will look at it and take corrective action. It could be that the office is run by some palistines who give very hard time to Israelis or people who want to sell extra insurance and if you do not buy they take on you their revenge.

Dollar Rent A Car customer service

After returning two cars which clearly were substandard I have entered into an escalated complaint with dollar.
Our first car made awful noises once we went over 35 mph
The second car was worse as the tailgate lost its hydrolic capability and my husband was hit in his head. The third car had no washer fluid which we only found out in the middle of a storm and we were trying to remove grease marks from wipers
We have been in correspondence with...nobody since July 17 i.e. Noone answers emails .only spoke to someone 24th sept but he didn't know what to do

Dollar Rent A Car i'm complaining about very poor customer service

9/23/2016 i had a rental car reservation for 12:30am when i got to tampa int airport the rental car setion was closed which was first problem second issuse was there was sigins stating to go to the other side of airport to the 2nd level where you return the car to do renter car pick up i walked with a 1yr old baby to the location that was on the sign that when the dollar renter car employee told me he had no car and i needed to return the first initil renter car pickup down stair on the other side of the airport because that where the manger was and would be able to help me need less to say after walking down there a 3rd time the office still remained closed after i walked up stair when he saw me coming back he went behind then counter then that when ms. Lisa assisted me i walked around the airport for 1 hour and 13 mins before being help the correct way i did not get service til 1:47am which cause me to miss out on a proposal for my best friend then when i call this morning i was transfered 26 time and on the last time is when the person hung up on me i realized that dollar in house and over phone customer service sucks its very poor and the prices is very high but yet they give u garbage customer service

and all i get after making a complaint is i do apologize

Dollar Rent A Car car hire extras not asked for

Arrived at Dollar desk having pre-booked car hire. Stated we didn't want any 'extras' as we wouldn't be using the car much and just wanted what we had prearranged. We were given a form to sign and took charge of a dirty car full of stains and crumbs of food. On our return home we received a charge from Dollar of £365 for extras we had signed for. They have refused to repay this as the form had been signed. We thought the person at the Dollar desk had been capable of understanding our simple refusal so can only assume he chose to dupe us. Will NEVER use Dollar again and intend to video any similar situation where there is a long queue and not much time to read the fine print.

Dollar Rent A Car unethical behavior

I work in Emergency Management and rely on rental cars for transportation when I am deployed (usually 100% of the time!). Recently (5/30-06/20 2016), I rented a car from Dollar Rent A Car (Albany Airport, Latham, NY). Per government regulations, I'd reserved a compact car. However, when I was in the store to pick up the vehicle I asked the representative (Dave Johnson) who I was working with if he could "upgrade" me to a larger vehicle (since I truly do not feel secure when riding in such small cars) at no charge since upgrades are not a reimbursable expense; initially, he said no. At that point, I told him that I would not move forward with obtaining the rental car from them and go back to Hertz since they (where I usually rent and have been renting from for the past year STRAIGHT) usually upgrade my car at no charge (probably because I am a loyal, consistent customer). Dave then stopped me and said that he could put me in a larger car. After some small talk with Dave (about my job, how he'd lived in my hometown of New Orleans for a few years, etc.), I thanked him and drove off in the upgraded car! Low and behold, fast-forward to yesterday, when I was preparing to submit my expenses and noticed a $217 upgrade charge on my receipt! Although, I was not happy to have to deal with going back to Dollar to "find Dave", I wasn't worried at all about him reversing the charge because I knew he'd remember me and the "situation" because we'd talked in GREAT LENGTH about my job, the car restrictions, New Orleans, etc. Well, as you may have guessed, Dave remembered me and our chat about New Orleans..but didn't remember that I'd CLEARLY stated that I could NOT incur ANY additional charges (and why)! I was STUNNED, to say the least. I guess he had to cover himself by lying. As I told him, if I was willing to pay additional money, there would have been NO need for all of the dialogue that we had about it. He then told me that he didn't have the authority to reverse it because I didn't report it within 24 hours and, at this point, only Management has that authority. After a long hold (he was filling the Mgr in, I'm sure), a Manager (Paul Peluso) spoke with me and told me that there was nothing he could do. I should add that he'd clearly already made his mind up before he'd spoken with me. I could tell by his nonchalant, unapologetic tone. Needless to say, I will NEVER rent from Dollar Rent A Car's Albany Airport location again (this was my FIRST time renting there). And had I read all of the other negative reviews BEFORE I rented from that location, I'm sure I wouldn't have. My advice to anyone who rents from that location, READ the estimated receipt BEFORE you leave. You can expect lots of smiles when you're renting, but terrible customer service if there's an issue after you return the car. Apparently, they often charge extras that are not agreed upon (take a look at other reviews). My next call is to corporate. Hopefully, they'll take the time to review my rental history to see that I have NEVER paid for an upgrade during this entire YEAR that I've been renting from them and refund me my money.
