Deplorable customer service

On July 14, 2009 I purchased some items for my grandson's birthday that included a $50 gift card. When I got home and ready to wrap the gifts and the gift card, the gift card was not in the bag with the birthday card. I immediately returned to the store to get the missing card. I talked with several store personnel and a manager. The manager basically told me he had reviewed the video and that the card had been in the bag. I explained to him that the card was not in the bag and that it did not leave the store. He stated he and the store are not responsible for merchandise once it leaves the store. I said but the card did not leave the store because if it had, I would not be back there asking for the merchandise I had purchased. I told them I live alone and no one had access to my car and the items I had just purchased. He again said he was not responsible and walked away. I returned home to again check thinking that I could be wrong about not getting the card. I went through the entire house even though the bags had only been in my car and my dinning room. There was no card. I had the receipts and the rest of merchandise. I took the merchandise I had and returned to Target. I asked them to invalidate the gift card using the code on the receipt and was told they could not do that. They had to have the card to invalidate it. I again told them I did not have the card and that if I had it I would not be there asking for it. I spoke with a different manager who indicated he knew all about what happened and he also stated there was nothing he could do. I asked for the telephone number for corporate headquarters and was told that the number was not available. It was clearly indicated by both managers that I was trying to pull one over on them and despite being asked to invalidate the card, they basically walked off. I am very frustrated by the fact that I am out $50 and also because of the way I was treated, in view of the fact that I just wanted the missing card invalidated and a refund for that card. Target will never get my business again and I will certainly make sure that I tell everyone I can about this incident so they can be aware that Target does not value their customers or stand behind what they market.
