Craigslist rental scam

Fraudsters operating at Craigslist are trying to con those who are seeking a dwelling on rent. In a recent incident, a lady seeking rented accommodation in Juneau, Alaska was almost duped by scammers who pretended to be owners of a property there.
When she responded to an ad on Craigslist, fraudsters asked her to make a deposit and for some personal information to be sent via email. Keys to the home, they promised, would be sent to her as soon as she did as told.
The lady was saved from being conned when she decided to physically verify the offer made by the fraudsters. She was surprised to find the listed property happily occupied by owners who had no clue that someone had put ads offering their house for rent.
Craigs list Rental Scam now spreading wide
These scams should now be seen as a common ploy adopted by fraudsters. They take down particulars of homes listed for sale at online auction sites and use it to offer the same place for rent elsewhere.
Correspondence with prospects are often done entirely via emails. The email will claim they moved recently from their homes to wherever-they-are-now on missionary work. It will use flowery words and will tug at your heartstrings to cover the scam.
The scams have their origins usually in Nigeria. As is expected, they rarely ever mention their postal address. An early warning sign, in such a case, is a contact number posted in the ad carrying the Nigerian country code.
Apart from pouching the deposit, fraudsters also use information given away by victims to steal their money. If you handover your bank account info, they are capable of transferring money from this account into one of theirs. If you divulge your driving license or social security information, they use these to open credit accounts against your name and make purchases against the same. Ditto for credit card details.
A good rule against falling prey to scams at online auction sites is to only deal with local buyers and sellers. When renting homes, especially, it is a good idea to pay a visit to the offered space. This enables you to verify independently whether the offers are genuine or not.

Discriminatory practices- Craigslist is an easy way for people to discriminate renting based on race. I viewed 2 properties in Indiana and when I followed up with the owners to ask questions, neither of them bothered to follow up or tell me that they had rented the property already. There was no reason not to allow me to rent the home. I am a professional, PhD. I drive a rather new BMW which I drove so they could not speculate that I could not pay. I brought my teen daughter with me, no pets etc.

Second, they can get away with asking for a credit applications prior to viewing the property. I wanted to verify that the home is something that I even want to apply for. The ads are misleading. One such ad stated the home was for rent but then when I asked to view it, the condition was to complete a credit app first and then she stated the home was actually for sell and it is a month-to-month lease for $1, 000 rent plus deposit. All of the aforementioned details and criteria were omitted from the ads. Who moves into a house to may have to move out in a month or two unless you solicit a corporate apt etc.?

Craigslist the substandard people who have been given management of craigslist.

As most people of sufficient education know, who have used craig's list (That is craigslist.org) - the power-management craigslist site tools have been entrusted to poorly educated, rude people who are able to prevent those whom they have taken a dislike to from even being able to get an ad to post on craigslist.org.

I assume that this is done from having allowed these low iq weasels to have a site tool that can read and bar any individual permanent computer id from the site.

If that prevention to post tool is not the one these types are using on you - then they use an ad deletion tool to delete your ad from the site 'claiming' that 'others' have 'flagged you off for violation of the tou (terms of use) -
Or sometimes they will 'speculate' that some people "just didn't like your ad" for one reason or another and 'flagged ' you off.

After changing and reposting your ad 5 to 6 times, one begins to realize that this is a lie. No one is actually "flagging" your ad - it's just that some hooligan-level mind with craigslist deletion tools has been deleting your ad.

Have you noticed that all criticism of flaggers on craig's list is always deleted? Does that make sense? No. They are simply lying and are terrified to allow other people who have not been deleted yet - to see them accurately criticized..

Craig himself - either no longer cares or just doesn't have the time to insure that his "list" - (which at one time was the best thing on the net) is continuing to benefit people and treating all posters fairly.

So I am starting another list - *an alternative to craigslist* - that will begin from parts of states in the united states - until each state is mostly covered and then will have each state connect to the other 49 states.

You can help me do this by 'friending' me on facebook on the mark gordon facebook page - from where I am beginning a southern new hampshire page. So search for the 'mark gordon' from manchester, nh on facebook and join me in creating a new and friendly alternative to craigslist. Thanks, mark

Well Erin - I can't make up my mind about you. You could be one Genuine one that has posted against me so far. You have only 193 posts on here since March. And only about HALF of your posts are Attacking people using this site.

But QUESTION ? :: WHAT'S THE POINT OF DISPUTING PEOPLE HERE ON THIS SITE WHO ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT A COMPANY THAT THEY FEEL HAS WRONGED THEM - - - UNLESS YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN HIRED BY COMPANIES OR A COMPANY OR A CONCERN THAT WISHES TO INVALIDATE PEOPLE'S COMPLAINTS ABOUT COMPANIES ON HERE ? ? ?

WHY TROLL AROUND AND DO THAT ERIN ? WHAT FOR ?

THIS SITE IS FOR CONSUMERS WHO FEEL THAT THEY HAVE BEEN UNFAIRLY TREATED BY COMPANIES - WHY DO YOU TAKE IT UPON YOUR SELF 85 TIMES TO DISPUTE THEM - AS IF YOU WERE WORKING FOR ONE OF THESE COMPANIES ? ? ?

YOU KNOW ? THAT IS A HELL OF A GOOD QUESTION - ISN'T IT ?

BUT ...
- I -, ONLY COUNTER PEOPLE ON HERE WHO ATTACK *MY* COMPLAINT POST. I DON'T GO LOOKING AROUND FOR OTHERS TO CRITICIZE THEIR COMPLAINTS FOR THE FUN OF IT as you and the TROLL gang seem to (((Or do it maybe because someone is paying me too ? ay?))

BUT *YOU* ! YOU GO AROUND THE SITE HERE AND *FIND* PEOPLE TO DISPUTE WITH !

WHAT'S UP WITH YOU DOING THAT ! ERIN

YAWN - Blah Blah blah etc. Have a nice night.

We'll see. I have friends on FB who have a LOT of Friends. So we'll just wait and see.

And asking people to get together to End an immoral, dishonest situation - which has NO Monitory reward or aspect to it at All - is not 'Soliciting' in the sense of 'soliciting' for $ gain.

And I GAVE AN EXAMPLE:: Try reading accurately if you are capable. I said that "... poorly educated, rude people who are able to PREVENT those whom they have taken a dislike to from EVEN BEING ABLE TO GET AN AD TO POST ON CRAIGSLIST.ORG . "
That's a Complaint just in case you can't figure it out.

Plus I am already getting support in my mail from people reading these things. So you have been caught out on ALL counts sweetie.

In the meantime - I will check your record on here. Have a nice night.

NOW, GIVE ME A MINUTE TO THINK THIS OVER.
OK - THAT'S ENOUGH.
You 'Filth Pilot' have THREE THOUSAND, ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY POSTS ON HERE SINCE MAY OF THIS YEAR. 3190 ! WITH THAT AMOUNT OF TIME TO ATTACK PEOPLE ON THIS SITE I GUESS WE ARE ALL MAKING YOUR WELFARE PAYMENTS SO THAT YOU CAN SIT HOME AND TROLL AROUND HERE.

THAT'S APPROXIMATELY 230 DAYS THAT YOU HAVE POSTED 3190 ATTACKS ON PEOPLE MAKING COMPLAINTS ABOUT COMPANIES ON HERE.

That computes to 13.8 attacks EVERY DAY FOR 230 DAYS ! !

YOU'VE BEEN A VERY BUSY BOY ON HERE *EVERY DAY* FOR 230 DAYS 'Filth Pilot' Old boy.
HMMM'M AND YOU'RE STILL NOT TIRED OF ATTACKING POSTERS ON HERE AT THE RATE OF 13.8 TIMES PER DAY? WHAT A DEDICATED LITTLE COMPANY SHILL WE HAVE HERE - DON'T WE?

I READ THE FIRST 120 COMMENT ATTACKS THAT YOU MADE ON PEOPLE HERE. I DON'T THINK ANYONE NEED READ ANYMORE TO SEE WHAT AN "HONEST" AND "SINCERE" PERSON YOU ARE 'Filth pilot' .
So you can join the LIST of SockPuppets who are the complaintsboard User Attackers.
Now we have
'Stealth Pilot'
'gatortracks' &
'truthandhonestywillprevail'

Maybe ALL the same sockPuppet - or perhaps 3 different sockpuppets All working for the same Employer. I will OUT you soon on FB so people know that there are such types on these sites.
WHAT DRAWS PEOPLE LIKE YOU TO BE SO EVIL and DISHONEST ?

Update by Mark Gordon
Dec 23, 2010 7:09 am EST

WELL THEN - LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT -YOUR- RECORD ON HERE 'Stealth Pilot' - and then we will see what kind of a person YOU are. Perhaps you are honest and sincere. I will take a look and get back here. I am compiling a LIST of those who ATTACK people on here. Didn't know there were those kind of people on a site like this.

What is THERE INTEREST in criticising people who complain here - EVEN IF the criticisms they make of other's complaints are CORRECT ? ? WHAT WOULD PROMPT ANYONE TO STAY ON A SITE LIKE THIS - JUST FOR THE PURPOSE OF 'STRAIGHTENING' PEOPLE OUT AND CRITICISING THEM WHEN THOSE PEOPLE FELT THEY HAD BEEN WRONGED.

SO WHAT'S BEHIND YOU AND GATORTRACKS AND -truthandhonestywillprevail- HANGING OUT HERE AND ATTACKING COMPLAINERS ? SEEMS ODD TO ME, AY ?

GOT A 'GOOD' REASON ?

Update by Mark Gordon
Dec 23, 2010 6:34 am EST

Take a LOOK at the RECORD on this Complaintsboard.com site of this person signing in as
GATORTRACKS. He/She has been on this site only since AUGUST of 2010 and he/she has POSTED 187 snide remarks -- almost everyone of which, is insulting the complainer and in favor of the company complained about or the agency complained about.

This site is here to HELP people deal with being mistreated by a commercial or government agency: - not to TROLL around exercising a pre-high school mind that just never got enough attention when he/she was a little boy. :)

Question :: Who is behind this guy ? Clearly there is no mind of honesty or intelligence behind this poster. I would say answer every trivial post of his/hers with the world "IGNORE".

To Stealth Pilot - I thanks for that, because I have the feeling that the CL CLIQUE Flagger-Deleters are going to gang up together and attack my Complaint.

And my Complaint is true and it is just to make it. If I go to another computer and use ANOTHER EMAIL I can get on CL . But if I use my own Email OR my own computer - the CL Deleter weasels will block my AD EVEN BEFORE IT CAN GO UP TO BE SEEN.

Update by Mark Gordon
Dec 23, 2010 6:01 am EST

@gatortracks - Probably a CL agent of sorts. Because he LIES. gatortracks says, "So you don't actually have a complaint..."
That sounds about at the mental level and the Dishonesty of most CL 'flaggers', TAKE A LOOK readers.
NOTICE how QUICKLY this lowlevel type like 'gatortracks' imediately inserts HIS STREET LANGUAGE like "###" ? ? Well you know the type and level of such 'real' posters. Of course he's not an 'agent' SHILL is he ?
If he can't tell that the BELOW post from my complaint is a COMPLAINT - then I suggest 'GATORTRACKS' take a remedial reading course until he can read the English language adequately. ::

""...craigslist SITE TOOLS have been entrusted to poorly educated, rude people who are able to PREVENT those whom they have taken a dislike to from EVEN BEING ABLE TO GET AN AD TO POST ON CRAIGSLIST.ORG .

JUST IN CASE YOU CAN'T FIGURE THE ABOVE OUT 'gatortracks' : The ABOVE IS A "COMPLAINT".

And yes, I am asking people to join together with me to DO Something about CL types LIKE YOU and CL. Don't like that ... go complain to your FLAGGER buddies.

The fixit, auto, housing, flag help & feedback forums are prime examples if you are curious about where and how the forums are manipulated and embedded gay troll/s (paid spammer?) textbok Aspergers behaviours, pedantic, officious cliche's bordering on Vaudevillian ###tia! For example, Fixit forum has Kenzz, alleges an expert in refrigeration, yet asserts refrigerators are not heat pumps, compresssors use 75 wayys but you cant run 2 refrigerators on a 20 amp corcuit > why if so who knows, he cant name the model # of anything he asserts thats ridiculous as a 6000% efficient heat pump! 60 times cheaper than heat strips ? insane actually ###ed to say and 250v service to his home, which plus or minus 10% will be 275v max! and our 220v equipment takes 242 volts max and he said this after I said I never see 245v in the field which he attacked me as often done almost every time using ###ic assertions he cant verify, yet via old accts, IP proxies and CL's lackadaisacal ways he can flag off posts even accts as his go for years abusing! see Kenzz, fedguy, Bobmobster, JburnswhenIpee, holigansdog, auldshaman, scram, nightowl, curmugeon, bh7, and on.
Amazingly all the various handles/sockpuppets are gay and equally clueless, possessing a veneer of actual knowledge yet keeping links and data as if obsesssed but makes statements that anyone who really works with power for a living knows is wrong, often dangerous! power gives no 2nd shots and he posts dangerous advice daily via many handles, many 6-8 yrs old with no history, just used to flag, vote, neg etc via IP proxies.

Update:

After posting ads on

Final list of johnjustice recommended craigslist "alternatives":

a) ebay classifieds
b) backpage.com
c) pennysaverusa.com (very good)
d) www.olx.com

it seems that none of them works. So craigslist is the only game in town but is run by abusive people who abuse their market power: the result is that the American consumer loses as there is no real alternative.

Clarification: Google Checkout requires credit card registration and that is why I eliminated it from my list of possible craiglist alternatives.

Also I do not feel comfortable giving my phone number to craigslist and ebay because they are for profit companies that seem to have no problem abusing and discriminating people.

You probably got kicked off craigslist because you're a giant [censored]bag. I sincerely hope that you don't attend my alma mater, Dartmouth College, but I'm pretty sure you don't, because you're not smart enough to get in. Only crazy people rant over perceived faults on a public forum like you have. Get some therapy, and learn that caps lock is NOT cruise control for cool.

Craigslist bad website

Craigslist is terrible. Over and over, every few weeks, they demand phone "verification:" on my existing account just to post ads. I never post more than a few at a time, each for a single household item for sale. After the latest "phone verification, " it wouldn't let me post ANY ads, just resulting in a canned message screen saying it was "blocked" for violating unspecified "terms of service." It advises to read the (extremely lengthy) terms of service to try and figure out for myself the reason! Same thing for anything I tried to post. I haven't had any conflicts with anyone I've sold to. so it beats me. And they're impossible to communicate with, since whatever you do, you only get the same mindless automated messages to your email.
I've had lots of other trouble with it. Guess it's a case of you get what you pay for. It's free- which equals worthless, in this case.

Craigslist scammed me

On, Craiglist this guy said he wanted to buy my bed. I said it was $600. So he sent me a chekc in the mail for 1, 999 and said to money gram the rest back to him. I did this and I think it was a scam b/c he never picked up the bed. He has the money and I'm afraid that the bank is going to find it a fraud and charge me the 2, 000 dollars out of my savings. I am a minor and only have like 2, 375. My mom went w/ me to cash the cashier's check. We asked the lady to make sure it was real and showed her the letter from the man. The check was from a Kentucky bank, not someplace like Nigeria. So she looked at it and made the other ladies look art it and said it was real. My mom asked her if we could wait for the check to be cleared, but the lady said that it was already cleared under a certain amount. I am sooooooooooooo worried and need advise on what actions to take so I can catch this bad guy and get my money back.
Thanks

Also, he said to send the extra money via money gram to the movers to pick up the bed. That was his reason for paying extra.

OK, i just got the fed ex box that the scam artist sent the check in. It has his name and address. His name is Philip Andreula from richmond, NY. When he was e-mailing me he said his name was Henry Barrie. I think that his name might really be philip Andreula. I googled his name and I found the name was real and the guy was selling a motorbike on Domestic Sale in 2007. What should my next steps be in this investigation?

Craigslist failure to post ad twice

I tried to place an ad on Craigslist on Monday Nov 15 and again on Tuesday Nov 16 for a portable dishwasher, a five drawer dresser, a two drawer file cabinet and a carpet shampooer but neither ad showed up on the web site and when I emailed them all I got back in return was a canned email that you can get in the help tab. I wanted answers to why my ad was not posted but they would not respond. I think Craigslist is nothing more than a fake and a rip off and anybody that uses it is in for a horrible experience.

Deborah D -

You are absolutely right about Craigslist. (See my complaint about them on here). I and MANY others have had SIMILAR problems with them.

I have looked at ALL the comments from this 'truthandhonestlywillprevail' Troll on here - and almost ALL of the 29 comments have been insulting or criticising the one complaining.
READ ON.

In SOME case truthandhonestywillprevail - BUT NOT WITH THIS COMMENTER
@truthandhonestywillprevail -.- This Business-supporting TROLL has been on this site only SINCE NOVEMEBER OF THIS YEAR and almost EVERY ONE OF THE 29 COMMENTS THAT HE/SHE HAS MADE has been a snide criticism of the person making the complaint.

CHECK THE OUT THE 29 POSTS OF THIS truthandhonestywillprevail CHARACTER ON HERE. You will see that almost everyone one of them is a snide one or 2 liner criticizing the complainer and supporting the business.

NOW ASK YOURSELF THIS :: WHY DOES HE OR SHE DO THIS ? IT'S NOT TO HELP YOU. IT'S NOT A COMPLAINT ABOUT ANY SERVICE THAT HE/SHE HAD. IT IS SIMPLY BECAUSE HE/SHE WISHES TO MAKE SNIDE REMARKS ABOUT THE COMPLAINER.

NOW WHO WOULD BE BEHIND SUCH PEOPLE TO MAKE THEM WANT TO SPEND THEIR TIME DOING THAT ?

WE SHOULD MAKE A LIST OF SUCH PEOPLE ON HERE.
A PERSON WHO POSTS UNDER THE NAME 'gatortracks' DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

SO - SO FAR WE HAVE -gatortracks- and -truthandhonestywillprevail- ATTACKING PEOPLE ON THIS SITE.

Be aware of an Arianna Mercer trying to sell a Sony 46" Bravia TV on craigslist. I fell for the same scam. I sent 370.00 to Italy to find out it was a scam. She promised to pay the shipping through a company called TNT Express and it all sounded legite...and come to find out, it was a scam and I am now out 370.00. I will do all I can to make sure it doesn't happen to someone else. BE AWARE!

Craigslist fraud

Beware of this craigslist/ebay scammer. The person posted NFL tickets for sale on craigslist and then says he can only do the transaction through ebay... but first he needs my name, address and ebay id. I gave him a fake ebay name and address to see where it would lead. Then, I receive an email that is supposed to look like it is from ebay saying that the ebay transaction is confirmed (which is impossible since I provided a fake ebay name). The email said the sellers PayPay account is currently not working so I will need to wire cash to the seller via Western Union. The email instructed me to wire the money to the name Martin Pratt 809 Romford Road London, UK. The original email communications listed the name Julia Barton in the email address but it was @googlemail.com (which means it is from a country where the gmail domain is not available) and now I am supposed to wire money to a man named MARTIN PRATT in a different country and then the tickets will be mailed to me. Yup, that sounds pretty legit.

Right now I am in the process of exchanging emails with the scammer because I gave him a fake Western Union MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number). I made sure to give him a 10 digit number so it looked legit... but guess what, he is unable to find the money with Western Union. Tomorrow, I will email him again to say that I transposed one of the MTCN numbers and he should call Western Union again.

Anybody can make up an email address to use for scams, but I assume it is difficult to create a name with a matching picture ID to use at Western Union... So if I can help people beware of Western Union transfers that involve MARTIN PRATT we may be able to make this guy go through the trouble of creating another fake identity... as I am sure he will not quit trying to scam people.

Hey here's a thought, if this Martin Pratt or Julia lives in London, what is HE/SHE/IT doing with NFL tickets for a game in america? London has a different kind of football I believe. Rugby I think.

LMAO I LOVE HOW YOU SCAMMED THE SCAMMER! DON'T TELL HIM I'M ON TO YOU! TOY WITH HIM! GET HIS HOPES UP FOR CASH AND WASTE HIS TIME! MILK IT AS LONG AS YOU CAN! THE TIME HE WASTES ON YOU HE CAN'T MESS WITH OTHERS! That was really a great test you had to see if it was real. If he contacted you saying it didn't go through you could give the real numbers then. I've never bought anything online like that, but I'll have to remember this if I ever think about it. HEY YOU SHOULD PUT HIS INFO ON HERE SO ANYONE, ... WITH TIME ON THEIR HANDS, ...WANTING TO MESS WITH THE SCAMMER FOR REVENGE, ... COULD HAVE FUN AT HIS EXPENSE! MAYBE HE'LL GIVE UP IF HE WASTES ENOUGH TIME PROFITLESS! I DON'T EVEN LIKE SPORTS, or have an ebay account or ID, but I can make up a fake name and address and ten meaningless numbers for western union. Tell us how to make up an ebay ID too. If I did this I could always say the tickets are a gift for my pretend husband, so my cluelessness in sports won't matter. Doesn't the name PRATT mean some kind of loser or Weeny? The guy named himself right.

Craigslist matthew j. davis

I thought this Craigslist ad sounded a bit too good, but I inquired about it, keeping my postal address off the resume. I awoke today to a response that set of my scam radar. Checked it out and saw many others like him, using various names. Not sure what they expect to get from this, and I hate that I sent all that info on my resume, but am glad at least they don't have my address. I wonder what's going on? Here's the email I received this morning, for the record:

Hello,

Hope you're having a pleasant day today You contacted me applying for the Job position which I advertised on Craigslist. Please take time and read this introductory mail and feel free to pass any questions on.

My profile briefly:
I'm Matthew J Davis, 52, and a father of 2 wonderful kids, a successful entrepreneur and investor, a member of the Angel Investment Network. I'm also a research journalist and I travel every now and then within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need someone who can help keep up to date with all of my activities especially when I'm away and amidst my busy schedule.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has to moved on with her personal life and this have affected me in a way. I found her previously on the craigslist website and I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been. Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work direct from your Home office as long as you have a regular internet access.

Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life. In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence;
* Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring;
* Organizing and maintaining diaries, memos and making appointments;
* Dealing with incoming email, faxes and post;
* Carrying out background research and presenting findings;
* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up;
* Arranging travel and accommodation
* Carrying out specific projects and research;
* Taking on some of the my responsibilities and working more closely with management and other staff related to me;
* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.
* Handling and monitoring financial activities.
* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.
* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise.
* General clerical activities.
* No expenses from you ( I'll pay all taxes & charges for any expenses )

But note : You will be hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, however does not affect your weekly wage. Your Basic wage is $550 a week.

Any extra personal expenses (transport, gas, etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working week.

This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing, just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on.

This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I'm currently in Thailand now for a project, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with immediately, prior to my arrival.

Due to the excessive number of responses to my Ad, do provide the following details about yourself for my personal record update and to filter applicants;

Full Names
Full Contact Address
City
State
Zip Code
Home Phone Number
Cell Phone Number
Occupation (if any)
Age

I hope you can be available for me immediately before I arrive, it certainly can act as a stable foundation to our impending working relationship.

Hope to hear from you again.

Regards
Matthew J Davis

I think check cashing services wait for the check to clear. Either way, if you cash it and don't wait for it to clear, you will be held legally liable, so it's not worth it.

Curious: This is a VERY common scam. Most likely he will send you a check that overpays you, and then will ask you to cash it and Western Union the rest over. Then your bank will find the check fraudulent and you will be held liable.

If you think it's legitimate, explain the situation to your bank and don't cash ANYTHING until it actually clears in the bank.

Did any of you get another response back after this one? I replied to this website as well but the emails continued. He said he wants to use me as his assistant. He says that he will send my pay ahead of time via money order in the mail and send money for the things like air line tickets and gifts for his daughters birthday coming up. It does sound a little fishy but do you think it is too good to be true?

I just received the same email. Luckily I took my address and full name off my resume. I did not include my references either.
I would post the email but it is literally word for word as the one above. What do they expect to get? What got me was that it can be home based but it says "* You will also be a part of my household and a helping hand to issues as they arise."
What is that all about?

Madmac, I received the same reply. The clincher was Matthew J. Davis asking for my age. That is illegal! FYI... I always take my address off my resume for Craigslist. Allan and pobar, It is not true that 95% of the posts on craigslist are scams! I have had a lot of experience from very legit employers! The initial ad from Matthew J. Davis did not include that he was a successful entrepreneur/investor/Angel Investment Network. His response back had all that information. What initially caught my suspicion was that he traveled to Thailand! LOL!

About 95% of jobs posted on Craigslist are scams. You should create a resume solely for craigslist ads that includes limited information. Always request a lot of information about the job and watch out for "credit checks".

your first mistake is looking for a job on craigslist...scam alert dead on - as soon as someone refers to themselves and a successful entrepreneur and investor AND a member of the Angel Investment Network - and they are using craigslist should tell you something.

stay away...

Craigslist scam job postings

On September 9, 2010 started receiving numerous phone calls and emails about jobs posted on craigslist.org. I advised the callers I don't post jobs on craigslist too many scams there. I went to take a look in the state of NY where the caller was calling from and found under the position of Theatre Box Office a job posting. When you click to apply it jumps you to another page that had my company name, company logo, company slogan, company pictures and color scheme, but it wasn't my company. The domain name was www.ikulich.com instead. And, the jobs were posted in Phoenix for Airport Valet, San Diego for Restaurant Dishwashers, New York for Theatre Box Office and Washington DC for Salon Receptionist-Guest Service Coordinator under 3 different categories.

I notified everyone that the jobs were not posted by The Fair Recruitment Agency LLC and that they were check cashing scams. The second web page with the same set up lists the above jobs as well as Classifieds Advertiser. You click on the jobs you want to apply for and it says to mail your resume to [protected]@amesris.com or [protected]@usset.net. To see what the jobs were about I applied for the Classifieds Advertiser for $500-$700/week. Sent my information in and received an email that my employment was confirmed.

I then got another email stating they would send me a check for $2410.55 to cash immediately at my own bank the same day I received it. Then, to send an email stating I got the check and they will send me the information where to post the ads. Well, a week later I got the check from postmarked from Canada, sent the email I received it and they replied to me. They said to buy three money orders from the US Postal Service and send them overnight to an address in Canada. But send them overnight from UPS. But the money orders at the Post Office but send them from UPS so they get them the next day.

This was obviously a scam. And, it's rampant on craigslist. So, Consumers beware of who you send your information to when applying for jobs!

Craigslist job scams

With so many Floridians out of work how can craiglist continue to let SCAM ads for employment contiue. There are people looking for legit jobs, and the scammers have taken over. It states if you can find and ID to report it, well guess what there are non to be found, and the scammers know it. Each time you fill something out for a position on line, thinking you are sending a resume to someone, then you receive junk mail and no real job interview. Can't anyone do anything?

Craigslist scam

This craigslist posting seemed legit at first, "cash deal only, meet and exchange".
but of course the pricing for a brand new macbook was just too good of a deal to be true.
When I got a reply email it was from a Laura Owen, (laura.[protected]@hotmail) stating she is from the UK. (red flag right there). She sent pictures of the macbook and although they look intially legit as well they were small thumbnail versions like something you'd get from taking the pics from another website.
I googled her email address to find multiple complaints about her postings being fake. dont fall for it.

She says she is Boston but she has posted in a bunch of other states trying to scam people.

Craigslist tom alpha

There is a job posted on craigslist.com that advertises for a clerk which pays 17.42 hour. It says you must have reliable transportation. It turns out that they want to hire you and offer all kinds of benefits after two months of employment. So you have an interview online and then they e-mail with some questions, and then tell you that you have the job. You must use Yahoo messenger and ad Tom Alpha so that you can receive the training online. I believe he is there to try and convince you that you have a real job. So then he or they give you a list of the equipment or "tools" that you will need. Computers, printer, fax, desk, file cabinet and software. They say they will mail you a check for training and to purchase the equipment. Suddenly a check in the amount of abour $ 2, 000.00 arrives in your name in the form of a cashiers check. Mr. Alpha wants you to deposit this check, which he says clears in 24 hours, and then you are suppose to Western Union all but $200.00 to a place up state where the Vendor is located so that you can purchase the equipment from them - they call this person the companies vendor.
It is a scam and please be very, very careful. I feel they want to use you to get cash sent fast and then you will find out the check is no good. It will be your responsiblity then to make it right with the bank.

Of course it is a scam, the checks are never "good", although they are real, they are not legitimate, and you wind up losing all your money. There are NO COMPANIES that hire people to work at home and then buy them office furniture and equipment, people please stop falling for these scams and put them out of business.

Craigslist possible scam

I (like a lot of other people) really want to get an iPhone 4. I'm not an at&t customer and don't feel like waiting 3 weeks to get one so I figured I'd look on craigslist to see if I could get one for a decent price. I've found a couple for under $500, but they seem a bit too good to be true. One of them said they were going to be using a shipping service called TNT in the UK saying that it'd make it easier for both of us. Turned out that was all a fake/scam/whatever. I found a couple of others that were under $500, but they were being shipped from within the US. Here's an email I got from one of the people:

My name is Jeffrey Todd. I am located in Fort Worth, Texas. I sell over 350 phones a month to people all over the United States on craigslist. All of my phones are brand new and still in sealed factory boxes. I do not sell clones or fakes. Every phone I sell comes with a 30 day money back guarantee with no questions asked.

I ship all my phones via UPS Priority Overnight for delivery by noon the following day as long as payment is made before 7pm central time. If payment is made after 7pm central time the phone will arrive the second day by noon.

At the present time I am only taking payment by Western Union or Money Gram. If you have any questions or would like a phone please do not hesitate to email me anytime.

Thanks,
Jeffrey Todd

I found this on craigslist and all over the site they always say "Never pay for anything via WU or moneygram" or something to that effect. Does this look like a scam to anyone else or am I just being paranoid?

I got an email from another guy saying something similar. I googled the email he was using and nothing scam related came up, but I'm still playing it safe until I hear otherwise. He's also wanting payment via WU.

Hi,

How are you doing? The Phone is Authentic Original not clone from China or copy. I'm located in Georgia United State i can have the Apple Iphone 4G 32Gb shipped to you via FedEx 24 hours delivery service, it comes with all accessories new in box... its

500usd each including the shipment... so get back to me with your total unit order and your full shipping address so

that i can have the iphone label and ready for shipping.

The enlgish is kind of broken which, at least to me, is a bit off putting but like I said I haven't found any kind of negative feedback on him anywhere. The email is us02shop@gmail.com. If anyone knows anything about this guy please let me know. I don't want to make a stupid mistake.

Rocky,
You are too eager to find a phone for cheap and you are looking past the very obvious signs of a scam. Nobody that lives in Georgia would have written an email like that, this is most likely an overseas scam. Although there might be some people selling their new iPhones, because of the shortage they will not be any cheaper than new in my opinion. I hope this helps.

Craigslist personal assistant ad

I responded to an ad on Craigslist on got a response from a US "business owner" away in London. I didn't listen to my initial grumblings about her not listing her business name, plus mentioning that I would have to use my own bank to cash checks she sends for purchases made. I sent her my contact info, though no bank account or social security number, but now I'm paranoid. I received a similar response to another ad regarding the Angel Investment Network, which raised my red flags one posting too late. Should I be worried about identity theft at this point?

Here's the response to my Craigslist inquiry:

What should you do? Not be as gullible. Read this stuff and watch for spelling errors/grammatical errors and stuff that just sounds odd, and you'll prevent this from happening in the future.

For now - block this person's phone, emails, mail, anything and everything. If they send you stuff, shred it (make sure you shred it) and burn it after if you're still feeling unsafe.

BEWARE!

Anytime there are typographical errors on ads, BEWARE.

Anytime checks/money orders will be made out to you and you NEED to cash them, BEWARE!

Especially if you are to DEDUCT your salary/expenses and then send a money order using the cash you received from the money order/check to someone else, BEWARE!

Anytime you see the words "MYSTERY SHOPPER", BEWARE!

I replied to a mystery shopper ad on Craigslist. The individual wanted my mailing address so that he could send me via FedEx. He sent me two checks totalling $1300. I was supposed to go to a Western Union office and send a wire transfer to someone else (after deducting the wire transfer cost and $350 for my 'trouble') who in turn would conduct a Mystery Shopper visit with another Western Union office.

When I went to my bank to 'cash' the money order, my bank said that I would have to DEPOSIT the money order into my account and then withdraw the cash. I asked the bank manager if my new job seemed a bit quirky, and he said, "Yes."

He made a copy of the money orders and called the money order company. They had no record of the money order numbers and said that the money orders I had received were FAKE!

Good think I didn't cash the money orders...otherwise, if I sent the money forward, I would have been out the $1300 once the bank received notice that they were BOGUS!

BEWARE!

Craigslist ripped off!

This company is run by a man named 'Jaree Ullah' - it's a complete rip off! We are a marketing company wanting to advertise on Craigslist for our clients and needed PVAs (phone verified accounts). We saw their website at http://www.clpvastore.com and ordered one PVA to see how and if their operation worked. After not receiving the PVA we emailed them and got an email back stating "Sorry for the delay, we had an personal problem & will deliver within 24 hours." After no response we called and got the following message: That mailbox is full". We've been calling and emailing and getting the same responses. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY 'JW Media Group' or this man 'JareeUllah - he's a complete scam! ! !

They are a scam indeed. We just ordered 20 PLV accounts from them and they kept giving us the run around so we had to do a charge back. They are using Paypal to charge and produce fraud online. It's to bad Paypal doesn't try a little harder to stop these scammers from doing what they do. Here is the email that He, She is using. Went by Lisa this time. email:clpvashop1@gmail.com

Craigslist info scammer

I found an interesting property for rent that sounded too good to be true. After hearing back a couple days later from responding to a craigslist post I recieved the following.
Hello James, (my name is Amanda)

I'm sorry I wasn't able to get back to you sooner! Things have been so hectic for me these last couple of days!

The good news is that the rental is still available! We had an offer from the first person we showed it to, but now it appears that they are changing their mind, so we need to start showing it again as soon as possible. You were the second one to email me about it.

The property was just cleaned, and it's in great condition. We know a lot of prospective renters want to do a quick look of the property, but my husband doesn't want me to mass send out the address as a measure of safety. Last time we did that without verifying people, another vacant property was broken into and vandalized. We don't want that to happen again! I CAN tell you that it's a very special property, which would normally rent for quite a bit more than other comparable properties in the neighborhood.

For utilities, your electric, gas, water, sewer and trash will be transferred into your name upon occupying the property. You will be responsible for cable, internet, and phone, if you decide to have these services. Just to confirm, we DO allow pets at this property.

The rental term is 12-month lease, but can be switched into a 6-month lease if preferred. We just ask that you give us fair notice if you are moving out.

If you would like to set up an appointment, go to the link below and request the free copy of your rental / credit report. We use this company for all the properties we manage. Just fill out the form and indicate that you want the free credit report. The actual scores on the report aren't important to us; it's more of a formality to have it on file, to make sure you are who you say you are.

Get your report here: http://ameriscores.com/yourfreecreditreport

Remember, we only need to see the page about the rental history. That will be all you will need to bring with you to the showing.
As far as getting together to see the property goes, I am available to show it any time from 10:00 am on, for the next couple of days. Let me know when you've printed out your credit report, and we will set up a time to do your walk-through.

Thank you once again for your interest!

Leslie Scotts
