Our goal was to buy a turnkey photo-voltaic system based on the Ontario Microfit program. We selected Cleave Energy Inc. to take care of the project.

During the sales process everything looked very professional, but shortly after the first problems occurred. The Microfit application process was managed by Cleave Energy. The application was submitted 3 times, because vital information were missing. This caused a delay of about 2 month. After the system was installed we discovered that Cleave Energy install 2 string inverter instead of the 52 Enphase micro inverter we ordered. The micro inverter are approximately $3000 more expensive. Cleave Energy did not inform us about the change nor did they offer a refund. Only after we complained we received the information that the micro inverter are currently not available. We contacted the Enphase distributors in Canada and all of them would have been able to deliver the required micro inverter the next day. After some discussion the string inverter were exchanged by Cleave Energy against the micro inverter. Unfortunately it is not the end of our story. We have a ground mount split row system with 2 rows in total. Currently the second row is facing magnetic south +13° west (true south). The first row is facing in a different direction (magnetic south). To the east the system is partially obstructed by trees on the neighbouring property. There are no obstructions to the south and west. We believe the system is incorrectly aligned. Especially the first row. The misalignment is leading to a lower output. After some discussion, Cleave Energy acknowledge the problem and offered us 2 different solutions. Realign the first row or refund us $1800. Since we believe the $1800 will not cover our loss, we decided to ask for the realignment.

Did anyone else have similar problems with Cleave Energy?

A visit to their web site returned this, someone appears to have hacked this untended, likely derelict, site...see pic

They sold us a poorly designed system. They provided inferior inverters, where the system was to produce 10kW, it cannot produce more than 9.5kW. After 2.5 years and 30% failed inverters they stopped honoring their 5 year warranty.

We purchased from them in 2011 and had to fight very hard to get a faulty panel replaced. Now another panel is faulty and now we have found out that they are not honouring their initial agreement of 5 year warranty. If we want the panel fixed it is at our own cost. Very shady company.

Heard on good authority: Dave and Nancy Cleave, in a surreptisious manner, absconded inheritance funds that were intended for other siblings. Allegedly, they disappeared a statement of accounts prior to the reading of a Will.

So easy to anonymously make such defamatory remarks! Post your real name and provide proof of your claims. Otherwise your claims would appear to be made from a competitor jealous of Cleave's success.

They are very well known for using cheap parts, over promising, under delivering and just generally being a very shady outfit. They claim projects that are not their own and have left a trail of very angry ex-customers from Windsor to Ottawa, beware!
