Citibank misleading and unethical practices

I have never not paid my credit cards. I had a Citibank card with a great interest rate and transferred the remaining student loan debt to it. The balance is $12k. I lost my job back in October. And immediately enrolled in a DMP in December to make sure payments to creditors were paid. I struggled. Sold all my furniture and was still unable to find a job. I had to take myself out of the DMP in May, just so I could continue to eat. I finally found work, and the DMP re-enrolled me due to my circumstances, and all my creditors have been great. Reducing interest rates and taking me back. Except Citibank, they don't allow it because I dropped out in May.

The DMP advised me to contact Citibank directly. Citibank told me that I could make monthly payments of $300 and that I would be in great shape within a year. I agreed. After that first payment, I noticed $200 of it went to interest and fees! Shocked, I contacted Citi and begged them to work with me, and they refused. They cancelled the payment then AFTER they cancelled advised me that I could never re-enroll or make payments with them again.. (Thanks for telling me AFTER you did that).

I was mislead by Citibank and now I'm trying to deal with a creditor that I am trying to pay back.

Citibank fraud

Dear All
I got robbed by Citibank, they do robbery in a smart way, they abuse the "Available credit limit", when you deposit money sometimes, they ignore your new deposit in the available credit limit, while they show it in the statement, then after a month you find that your credit limit didn't increase, they steal thousands of Dollars from every customer every month through credit card transactions, they stole 800 last month and stole 1800 today!
The problem is that they keep records and if you sue them, they will deny what you say and bring forged records that prove that you are insane, so they best way is to close your account with Citibank and stay away from them, they are good at stealing money then convince you that you are stupid and totally mistaken about what happened.

Tired of the banking fraud
Miami, US
Aug 30, 2014 8:10 am EDT

Because of the recession, in 2010 I attempted to negotiate with Citibank to reduce my minimum payment. They neglected, failed and refused to negotiate with me leaving me no choice but to default as I was unable to make the minimum payments. I attempted to negotiate in good faith again a few months ago. Again, Citibank neglected, failed and refused to negotiate with me stating I now owe them and additional $9, 000 in interest and late payments. This is considered fraud, refusing to negotiate with a customer, just so they can rack up interest and late payments after a customer attempted in good faith to negotiate a payment plan. They continue to threaten legal action against me by stating they can collect the money through other means. I filed complaints against Citibank through the Consumer Protection Agency but they are also a scam stating I need to hire an attorney. Then what good are they? We should not be paying tax dollars to a governmental agency that is supposed to help consumers but does not offer any help whatsoever.

Citibank bogus late fees

In December of 2011 I made of purchase of $82.76 from Home Depot using my credit card from Citi. When I finally was billed in March, I promptly paid the amount of the purchase but not the late fees. The failure of Home Depot and/or Citi to generate a bill cannot be remedied by assessing bogus late fees. I am not in a “cannot pay “situation. This is a “will not” pay situation. The "fees" now exceed $180. I would strongly advise anyone to use another credit card other than the one provided by HD from Citibank.

Citibank incorrect reporting

6 / 09 buy one plant get one free if you open account. Days later, cell phone talking driver totaled 3 cars and hit fire truck. My back was broken x2, legs crushed, left foot broken, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury. Two months after accident was in rehab hospital when learned of past due $49. 00 statement. $49. 00! Was 30 days late. Paid immediately. I was told by experian rep it should have been forgiven. When talking to a representative of the bank he was very scarastic and nasty. For three years they have showed as past due even though it was paid as soon as possible and i called to tell them the circumstances, lowering credit score. Instead of a perfect 850, rating it is 790. I am furious every time i see it.

Upon filing a fraud alert, due to other suspect activity I've uncovered in the last several days, in reviewing my credit reports, I noticed an unauthorized inquiry was made by THD/CBNA into my credit report on 10/16/2012. There is no telephone # listed for THD/CBNA so I am following up via this mode of communication. I will be writing and sending a certified letter of dispute and complaint directly to THD/CBNA as well, in addition to filing a police report.

Citibank card re-issue

27 June 2012
Citibank NA
8th Flr., 1 Eastwood
Libis, Quezon City

Letter of Complaint – Citibank Visa

Sir,

You have had my business since 1995 and in all this time I can only describe your service as
mediocre, at best. This starts with just trying to get in touch with you; a telephone system that is such
an ordeal, it would leave anyone in a real emergency dead before he got through. It was hard enough
getting this contact. It seems Citibank does not offer the option to send them complaint letters. While
I would not be surprised that nothing comes out of this complaint (as nothing has ever happened to
those I’ve made by email and to your telephone operators) I write it anyway for the record, and for
purposes you will find out later why.

A more concerning issue is the cavalier manner by which you cancel and/or block cards with blatant
disregard to the inconvenience you cause to the customer. In my particular case, note the following
from 2009 to-date:

- that card was reissued on March 2010, valid until March 2013;
- the card was again reissued on June 2011, valid until March 2013;
- the card was yet again reissued on June 2012, valid until March 2013;
meaning the card will be reissued again in 9 months.

When I tried to use the latest card received last week it was again blocked. After the painful exercise
of calling, you “reactivated” the card, but cannot, or will not, give a reason why it was blocked. You
do not seem to care about the hassle, and embarrassment you put the customer through. This seems
to be a regular event, each time shortening the card validity. Thank God I did not fall for your sales
pitch to have my utility bills paid against this card.

In the past the reasons have always been the same - card has been compromised or was part of a
batch of cards which you had to recall. You like to say you are doing this for my protection. If this is
true, and if the card was compromised because (e.g.) I used it in establishments or on vendors that
you consider dubious, then why not tell me who they are? You are already charging me extra for an
“added security service”. What’s so hard about calling my celphone while I’m doing the transaction
to warn me. You used to do this before? Otherwise, cut the ###. The truth is your security system
sucks. And you are so fixated on profit generation that “service” (a word you have yet to learn to
spell) does not come into the equation.

Please tell me then how you are going solve this, or if I should cancel this card, and all my other
accounts with Citibank, and take my business elsewhere.

Yours truly,

Citibank credit card solicitations

in early may i stated receiving credit card solicitations from citi bank indicating 0% for 18 months on transfers and 0% for 12 months on purchases. i ignored the letters for awhile and then decided to apply on line to take advantage of the offers. i went to the citibankonlineaps site and applied for the card. i was approved immediately and the cards came 2 weeks later. upon receiving the casd it was a mastercard in lieu of a visa with only a 4800.00 limit. i called their activation phone and was told that i aplied for the wrong card and should go back to their website and reapply. he said he couldnt do anything else to raise the limit so therefore i went back to the website and reapplied for a "thankyou citibank card". again it was approvedthis time with an 8100.00 credit limit. the cards arrived and i called to activate them and ask about the 0% offer and again was told i applied for the wrong card however this time i asked for a supervisor. she said dont reapply, she said she would try to increase the limit on the simpllcity card as it had a 0% offer. i agreed and waited a few days for a response. i got a hold of another supervisor who said nothing changed and that the first supervisor was incorrect to say she could trry to increase the limit so i could make a 0% transfer. so far they had given 13100.00 in lines of credit which was more than what i even needed but they could not raise the limits or even set up the correct card. citi bank solicited me not the other way around and all i wanted to do was take advantage of the 0% offers. since i already wasted alot of time and effort trying to resolve this to no avail i decided to cancel both cards and asked to receive written confirmation that i had done so. a week later still havent received the letters. maybe it was my fault because their website is confusing and there are severa types of credit cards but you think someone in supervision could resolve this. i filled out citi baks survey relating this story and havent heard from them. the moral of the story is dont apply for a citi bak card

Citibank poor service

I was a citibank credit cards holder for the last two years and has cancelled the cards due to a special fee imposed by Malaysian Government to all credit cards holder . Recently I have reapplied for citibank credit cards due to special promotion and offer given by it merchandisers and to my dismay my application was turn down . I have called up the service center and write in to enquire about the reasons why my application was turn down but non of the customer and officers after putting me on hold and waiting can tell me why . In fact I was turn away rudely with insulting words . I am very disappointed with citibank, such a big global bank with such services? I think will stop supporting all citibank products and will not recommend people to use citibank now on.

Type: Complaint
Category: Banking Mortgage
Sub-category: Loan Recovery Issues
FI Name: CITIBANK BERHAD
Acct No: [protected]
ID: [protected]

I am Shalany Konasakaran (IC: [protected]) would like to bring to the attention of your good self that I received a court notice (BA-24FC-433-09/2021 dated: 29 Sept 2021) to attend court on the 29 October 2021 at 0900 AM.
Please take note that the letter from the Lawyer for CITIBANK Bhd which was dated 22.10.21 (3 weeks after) was handed over to the postal department on the 25.10.2021 (stamped on the envelope - 3 days after) and I received the Court Order by Registered Post only on the 29.10.2021 (4 days after). To me, it seems to be delayed on purpose so that I will not be able to attend court on that stipulated date and time.
If there was a court order for me to attend court, than my account with CITI BANK should have been temporarily blocked so that no payments will be accepted, whereby I have to go to the counter to pay.

I requested for the Moratorium relief too but was not entertained by the bank. I would like to bring to your attention that I made payments as stated below, all of which was accepted by the bank.

No: Date Amount
01. -- August 2021 RM 1700.00
02. 08 September 2021 RM 3400.00
03. -- October 2021 RM 1700.00
04. 23 October 2021 RM 1700.00

Please take note that in the first place, there should not be any Court Order to be sent to me as my account is up to date. You have also charged me RM 635.80 as legal fee. Please refund that legal fee as it is not my mistake but the lawyer's and the Bank's mistake.

I called the lawyer's firm and the lawyer told me that the bank has asked him to proceed with the case. He also told me that he don't know if they had checked the records before asking me to proceed.

What I am afraid is that since I did not attend court further action will be taken on me. Please let me know what you intend to do about this.

For your information I have sent a copy of this letter to the Court "Penolong Kanan Pendaftar", Ms. Elizaberth Low.

Regards,
Shalany Konasakaran

I am writing to complain of the poor service I received from your company on the 1th of july, 2018.in 1 Utama Shopping centre I visited of with Jurassic World Exhibition and want to inform you about the inappropriate behavior of the sales card salesman
I was annoyed that I wasted all afternoon, i don’t take your card event I wonder if I am wrong?I don't seem to say anything make a opinion, about the salesman to make something of this situation, the stop my road saying the tone of incite fighting go to the side, I have had the following problems other salesman see the problem and refused to reaction. Such volatile behavior not only claims the rights of consumers, but also basic ethical and moral standards as well. This attitude makes the general manager of the company in the eyes of consumers lose credibility, which is unacceptable.
I hope that you can train your people and hope that will not lose your company's face.

As I travel a lot on business and given the weak Ringgit my current credit limit is never enough. So I requested for an increase in credit limit from Citi in January 2018. I have submitted form and supporting documents twice and nothing has happened since. At the time of this writing (March 2018) I have yet to hear from Citi. I have been offered a new card with another bank with attractive benefits. So, to Citi whom I have been with for close to 20 years...SAYONARA!

My credit card was deactivated due to new rules implemented by Bank Negara recently. I had sent numerous e-mail and made tons of calls to Citibank requested for the activation of my cards. But all my calls were just simply entertained by the operator with some empty promises that they will return call to me. None of it happen. I had sent at least 3 e-mails to update.income@citi.com attached together with my salary slip but no reply at all. Hope this e-mail will help.

Citibank using my private mobile nmber for their customer

I am based in Bahrain and I am not a Citibank customer however someone has accidently put my mobile number in their database and I am receiving sms at odd hours for the other customer who is not even aware that I have all his expense and payment details. I have already complaint 3 times to Citibank Customer Service in Bahrain. One can check their and my telephone records if need may be. Every time they say a sorry and assure me that my mobile number will be removed from their databse but I am still receiving sms. I also got a call from Dubai head office assuring me that I will not receive sms henceforth but still nothing was done about it. I am disgusted that is it so difficult to remove a mobile no. from their information?
Firstly it is a complete breach of confidentiality on the hands of Citibannk who boasts of best services and a big name but they are so sloppy and irresponsible. Secondly after I complaint not once they looked into the delicacy of the matter Who will trust a bank who openely flashes private information with the credit card details which belongs to their customer to someone who is not even a customer. If someone misuses this information who will be responsible? Its been happening since 4 months. I kept patience but now I need to sort it out. I have no repose from their Customer service hence I am forced to put a complaint online. I do not see any other option.
Hope I will get some peace and solution.

Citibank unauthorized charge and failure to remove from credit card

We received confirmation of Crdit Notify being removed from our credit card account in May of 2011. We were still being charged in March of 2011. We have the confirmation number so we called today and spoke with a representative. She said they would cancel it today but would not reimburse for the fradulent charges since May of last year. They didn't care that we had confirmation and name of the representative who gave the confirmation. I recommend that no one accept a free trial offer for any credti notification scheme by credit card companies. If there are enough people out there who would like to get their money back by filing a class action law suit I would be happy to join with you.

Citibank mortgage refinancing

I contacted CitiMortgage, my mortage company, regarding the refinancing of our home. I was given a rate and initiated the loan process. Three days later I was offered a better term with my regular bank, so I contacted Citi to cancel the loan application. The Citi rep offered to match the other bank if I would stay with them. I agreed and waited for the new offer from Citi to arrive. After 4 days of waiting, I contacted Citi and was assured everything was still good and that I can proceed with the appraisal. After cancelling my appraisal 2 times, the mortgage consultant assured me that things are just going to be fine and that he'll make sure the appraisal won't be cancelled. The appraisal was completed, but I still didn't received any documents regarding my refinancing from Citi. I contacted the agent again and was told that I will receive the documents within a week. When the docs didn't arrive, I emailed the agent and was informed that he went on a medical leave and to contact his back-up. He then called me while on medical leave and said the docs were returned to his office, but he'll have somebody resend it. When it didn't arrived again, I contacted him but he didn't respond. I sent 3 more emails, made 5 calls to his back-up and didn't get any response. I had my CitiBank branch manager contact CitiMortgage and was finally told that the "matching" offer would not be honored. The "medical leave" agent has been transfered and there's nothing the back up can do. So after one month of waiting, I've lost out on the great mortgage rate and is forced to look for another lender for my refinancing

Citi has failed to send me my refinance papers twice now, They even sent a person to my home to sign the papers and the papers were not here, we both thought the other had the papers. They are just an awful company to do business with and it is costing me money, time and worry. It should not be this hard to get this done. They even charged me twice for 1 month mortgage payment, I finally got it back but I had to put a project on hold because they took the money that was earmarked for lumber. I really think this company should be fined or something for they way they treat people. With all the people out of work right now can't they hire anyone with an IQ of over 89?

Citibank citibank can be tough to handle if you are battling them alone

Citibank needs to be pressured with Imminent (BK) Threats or Mediation Law and Procedures.
They are basically a giant collection agency. They purchase the distressed mortgage at Extreme Discounts from various key players in the sub-prime arena. They collect aggressively on this paper. They do not play by the rules and need to be pressed hard.

We have completed successful loan restructuring cases with Citibank. They are all long run and brutal battles.

Citibank creating a debt from zero balance accounts

I had two CitiBank accounts in 2011. With substantial amounts of money on deposit. When CitiBank imposed a $30 per month service fee, I immediately moved to get all of the funds withdrawn and the account balances both to zero. I told the teller, upon taking the last small amount of funds out, to close both accounts. I thought I was done with CitiBank.

For the seven month period subsequent to making both account balances zero last year, I now discover that CitiBank has been transferring funds neither account has on deposit between the two. It has imposed monthly maintenance fees, interest charges and overdraft fees. CitiBank put its own funds into a zero balance checking account to force that account to carry a balance subject to monthly service fees. As if I had borrowed money by cash advances or otherwise.

CitiBank now claims that I owe a substantial principal amount and must pay the present sum of the overdraft within 15 days or the bank will do what it can to ruin my credit rating and collect the money. What CitiBank did: create a debt in its favor out of two zero balance accounts where there was no intent to borrow on the part of the depositor.

I've given CitiBank 15 days to straighted out the mess it made for its own benefit or all of the paperwork and the threats from CitiBank will go from my desk to banking regulators. I cannot be the only one in the whole world where CitiBank creates debt obligations in its own favor out of zero balances and then threatens the customer with a "pay up or else" demand.

Don't do business with CitiBank is the best advice I have.

Citibank incompetency

Cancelled card via Telephone. Card had 0 balance. Spoke with an individual with an Indian accent so thick I thought I was talking to "Peggy". Peggy insisted I had a $69 credit. I insisted that I did not have a credit balance. He indicated I could only close the account if he sent me a check for $69 - I agreed. 6 months later, I received notification from a debt collector for an unpaid balance on my closed Citcard. NEVER received any billing or correspondence from Citi. When I attempted to call Citi, I was transferred to the debt collector. I wrote Citi and received no response. They have dinged all 3 credit reports. ABSOLUTE ### - THEY COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT CUSTOMERS. They should seriously change their name to [censored]IBANK.

4. the amount of 578407/- is actually with interest and late charges, the actual amount is around 298000/-

Looking at the seriousness, I have borrowed the money from someother sources, and cleared the said amount on the due date 25 jun 2010.
But now, after one and half year, Dec 20111, still my name is not cleared from CIBIL. I really don't know how to resolve this.

Please help.

Citibank the grinch is a sears mastercard programmer

I have a Sears Mastercard that I use for my online shopping. Recently I tried to make a purchase with my card, only to find out it was frozen. Upon calling the 800 number I found out this was due to "suspicious activity".

The suspicious activity has a name; it's called Cyber Monday and Christmas Shopping. There were no mistaken charges, no double charges. No nothing. I hit a series of major bargains and got my Christmas shopping done. Apparently some algorithm or other thinks that bargains are suspicious.

To top the whole thing off, today I received two written messages saying my card had had suspicious activity and that I was to call you immediately if I hadn't already taken care of the problem. The letters were dated December 2, days after I'd already called. The letters claimed you called and were unable to reach me, which is untrue. There were no calls either live or on my answering machine.

I am left to wonder if it would have flagged five or six big ticket purchases. The last time it was frozen, it was because I tried to pay for a shipping label on USPS.com - the Post Office website. What I'd like Mastercard to do is rewrite its software so that normal Christmas shopping appears to be what it is - normal.

Dear Ruth H.

My name is Robert and I am part of the Sears Social Media Escalations team. I am very concerned about what I have read here. I came across your post and I wanted to reach out and offer our assistance in getting this unfortunate situation resolved. I'm sorry for the discrepancies in your Sears Credit Card. I can only imagine your frustration and hassle with this issue. We can help get you in touch with a supervisor with CitiBank, who handles Sears’ credit. Sears is the retailer and not the bank, thus CitiBank makes all banking decisions, rules and parameters.

At your convenience, please contact our office via email at smsupport@searshc.com so you don’t have to continue to be frustrated by this. In the email, please provide a contact phone number and we will call you directly. Also, in your email, please provide the screen name (Ruth H) you used to post on this site, for reference to your issue, and we do look forward to talking to you soon.

Thank you,

Robert B.

Citibank bait and switch

While I had already had a checking account with Citibank for many years, my problem began when I decided to open a savings account. When I signed up for the savings account I was led to believe that I was opening a basic plan, appropriate to my status as I am a student with relatively low earnings. Instead, they signed me up for a business account. I believe this was not simple negligence but a willful error on Citibank’s part.

Attending school and working part time, my savings account was dwindling. Unbeknownst to me, I was being charged by Citibank a $34 fee per month for going below the $5, 000 minimum needed to maintain the business account without charges. Such charges would of course be acceptable if I had signed up for such an account, but this I did not do.

After voicing my concern at Citibank in person, the branch manager unfortunately chose not me contact me at all, despite the fact that I had left my number with person at the service desk. I waited for days with no reply, so I was forced to seek other means assistance. I have now cancelled my accounts with Citibank, but they still owe me for the fees accrued during the time I spent under a savings plan which I NEVER even signed up for.

As a young person with relatively sharp instincts, it took me a great while before I understood what was happening. I can only imagine how many times Citibank must pull such a bait-and-switch operation with elderly patrons who will never be able spot it.

Citibank hiding assets in order to charge monthly fee

My net worth with Citibank shows as being over $100 K on my statements in 2011 which entitles me to have a free Citi Gold account. However, I was charged a $30 dollar monthly service charge for October. I called Citibank on 11/2/2011 and was told that what I see on my statement is not what is counted as net worth at Citibank. My Annuity purchased by Citicorp Brokerage for me held by Hartford is subtracted but not shown on my account. I was told that what I see on my statement is not the real value that they use to calculate whether or not I qualify for a Citigold account. They deduct the $5.5 K Hartford Annuity from the rest of my holdings when assessing my "real" net worth with Citibank. I was never informed of this. It is a cheat performed by Citibank to extract charges by hiding this information. If it is included in my statement as part of my net worth then that should be the sum used to qualify for or not qualify for a free Citigold account.

To conclude: Because Citibank chooses not to put the net value of my accounts that are used to calculate whether or not I qualify for a CitiGold account on my monthly statement I was not able to know when I was under the amount required to qualify for a CitiGold account. If I had seen the amount drop below $100K (which it did not on the statement) I would have taken steps to downgrade my account in order to avoid the $30 monthly fee. This is why I am claiming that Citibank is hiding information in order to charge fees. I have tried to explain this in many ways. Does anyone agree with what I am saying?

I am still not getting my point across. THE TOTAL ON MY STATEMENT IS NOT THE TOTAL USED TO CALCULATE MY NET WORTH. THE TOTAL THAT CITIBANK USES SHOULD BE ON MY STATEMENT. I should not have to figure it out or dig for the exceptions. I want the total used to calculate whether or not I still qualify for a CitiGold account to be listed ON THE STATEMENT. Ellen posts a short blurb of the vague rules and regulations for a CitiGold account which has nothing to do with my issue.

The list of what is included cover annuities the way I read it. The annuity is included in the total in my Citibank investment account. This should be the total worth of investments to include with my checking and savings. This final amount should be the amount that Citibank uses to ascertain weather or not I qualify for a Citigold account. Does any one agree with me?

I appreciate the feedback on my complaint. In response to Elen67: I tried looking up the details of what is not allowed in the tally of one's worth at Citibank. I can no t find anything online that says that annuities are excluded. You are missing the point here. I could not find a list of exclusion on Citibank's site. It is not possible for me to know all the minute details and loopholes. The point is Citibank provides a total of my worth on the statement. It is not a true total. It should be minus the annuity that Citibank does not count as part of my total worth at Citibank. I have always been aware of the basic conditions of the account. The drop in the stock market caused the hidden exclusion to surface. The exclusions should be included in the statement summery; especially since Citibank includes that annuity on my brokerage statements. Tell me why not including this deduction from the total is OK?

Went to cash a check but, I needed 25cents to put into meter. I signed the check, swiped my card, enter pin number and ask for a quarter and go outside, be right back. The clerk refuse to do this. I ask if the other girl was here."No." With this attitude there was no excuse for. I will get a ticket. I wil not return to this bank again. Just give me my money (check I'm cashing). She closed the account. What! I did not say that. I left upset. This is unacceptable.

So if everyone kept balanced check registers, the banks would have charge some monthly fee across the board. Then you'd have to contend with all the "bookkeepping savvy" customers who have never incurred fees of any kind.

Well maybe the consumers are tired of people like you defending the banks criminal actions. Credit unions are far better.
