Return policy borderlines fraud

I bought a Vivitar camcorder from buy.com. The camcorder had two reviews, one was good and the other says the machine broke down in week 1. I thought what are the chances of mine breaking down in week 1, right? My Vivitar camcorder broke down on Day 6 of arrival, the 2nd time of use.

When I called Buy.com, the rep said they can't take the camera back even though they have a 14 day return guarantee. The reason: The 14-day period starts counting when package leaves buy.com; the ground shipping I choose took over a week and puts me over the 14 days.

This policy means buy.com gives customers different return protection according to the shipping method. Ground shipping customers get less than the 14 day return guarantee. I think this is borderline consumer fraud.

I will never buy from buy.com again.

I purchased a keyspan ps-4a Print server from Buy.com and the device doesn't work. Started e-mail corresponding with Buy.com 7 days after it arrived. Asking for a return authorization. Rec'd one e-mail asking about original packaging. After the 14 days elapsed no returns in red! I found buying from this seller to be an extremely egregious affair bordering on being criminal! This seller is unscrupulous & unconscionable. Be extremely apprehensive about purchases from these people!

Me too. Ever since my local CompUSA closed down, I've been buying my stuff from Tiger Direct, New Egg, and Buy.com. No more Buy.com for me. Same deal: 14 days from FOB them, even if it doesn't arrive for 9 business days here.

I don't return a lot of stuff, but I bought this item not sure if I needed it. (It's a new talking GPS. I've had a Garmin eMap since 1999. It didn't do routing, but it was useful enough.) I kept it as like new as I could since I knew I wanted to check it out. It's got some issues that this isn't the forum for, but it doesn't meet my needs.

Shame on me, the policy I thought applied was that for another online retailer, but I expect things to be pretty much the same and not sleazy. (I was having trouble with a refurb router from TigerDirect - it mostly works but I couldn't get it to do some things. Netgear customer support said "If you've got any problems, just return it." I didn't.)

14 days, less 9 business days (up to 13 regular days if it spans 2 weekends, more if there's a holiday in there) means it might as well be non-returnable. I doubt I'll be buying from Buy.com again, but if I do, the thing to do is request an RMA before it arrives.
