Buffington Homes Warranty

I was very excited when I purchased my first home! I closed on my home 9/30/2015 and moved in 10/23/2015. The first week in my new home I experienced a roof leak which resulted in water damage in my garage. My home was build 04/2015 so I was unsure how many times this may have occurred and possibly repaired. I completed a warranty request to have this issue resolved. On 10/30/2015, the drywall guy showed up to repair the damage in the garage, however it was raining again on that day; therefore he was unable to complete the job. Due to the roof not being repaired, more damage occurred in my garage. I made contact with the warranty department to obtain information on when the roofer would be out to make repair. I was informed that he would be the following Tuesday, 11/03/2015. When the roofer made repairs, it was discovered that previous work from initial roofers where not done correctly. In my attempts to have the initial issues corrected, the contact person from Buffington was not easy to work with. I took pictures and sent to him via text on the work that was done. He continued to try and convince me that everything was done correctly. To ensure that I was accurate with the findings, I drove around several Buffington homes that were in building process and it was confirmed that there was some error in the initial installation. The roofer did return to correct those issues Tuesday, 11/10/2015. On this day, the drywall guy returned to my home to fix the damage in the garage. He informed me that he was to replace the drywall in the ceiling and not all areas that were damaged by the leak. I informed him that I was not satisfied with that due to this is an issue that may have occurred several times in the past prior to moving in. He then contacted the contact person with Buffington Homes. During the phone call he was informed that he was not to replace all areas and that he could leave. This again left me with having unresolved issues. To ensure that the chain of command is followed, I reached out to the VP of Operations to escalate this issue. She informed me that that the previous Buffington contact person filled her in on the issue at hand. I explained to her my concerns as a new homeowner and my fear of mold occurring in the future due to all water damaged areas not being replaced. She scheduled to have the one of the managers from the drywall company to come out and another person on their team to come out and review the issue. The gentlemen came out on 11/17/2015 and informed that they can replace the tape ducts but not the entire area, which calculated to about 3-4 pieces of sheetrock. I expressed my concerns with them in regards to mold in the future and was informed if there are reoccurring issues regarding this, it may be still covered with the warranty. My argument is, why wait for something to occur when it can be prevented. The gentlemen left with letting me know that they will consult with the builders and let me know the resolution. Thursday, 11/19/2015, I had not heard anything back in regards to this issue. I had to reach out to the VP of Operations to inquire on the status. She informed me that she spoke with the initial contact person and he should have reached out to me by now. She stated that they made a decision the same day to stand by their initial response.

We purchased our home in 2014. Once before the construction manager looked at the cracks at the ceiling of the guest bathroom. He said this could be due to the wind blowing the boards in the roof. A painter repaired the cracks. Now we are finding other cracks in the paint at the ceiling above the mirror and several other places at the ceiling.. Can you please send someone to look at it? I was thinking of contacting the Buffington to learn more about their home for a purchase, but now after reading this post, I will never purchase their home.

Buffington Homes regrets that we have been unable to resolve this situation with our homeowner. We have offered multiple times to make the standard corrections required from the situation that has occurred, but our offers have continuously been rejected.

We have in no way denied the claim or refused to do the repair, even though the claim could be construed as non-warrantable according to the warranty guidelines, due the extreme nature of the October storms when it appears that the leak began. Some builders would try to say that damage as a result of such storms must be claimed under homeowner's insurance. Buffington Homes strives to do what is right by working within our warranty guidelines using standard practices for warrantable repairs to keep things fair and equal for all homeowners, but also goes above and beyond the guidelines when the situation calls for it.

Up to this point, we have had no cause for concern in regards to mold based on our observations of Buffington management, as well as the observation of our drywall contractor manager, nor has the concern been expressed by the homeowner. We always take all mold concerns very seriously, and will gladly bring in a specialist to assess the situation to make sure no hazards are present in the home, if the homeowner desires.

Unless the specialist feels other action is required, we will continue to honor the already stated option of repairing the affected area if the homeowner allows us to do so.
