Think Twice before signing up. Many people have problems with alcohol/drug addiction and seek help. But if you need need help, think twice before entering Big Island Recovery. I felt unsafe and the program had no direction. There was no yoga, no healing, no rest, no one-on-one counseling. The website is misleading. My problem made me vulnerable and I needed one on one attention, counseling, and a place to heal. BIR was the opposite. I felt unsafe and like I was in a military camp. I left after 7 days, and received NO REFUND for the remaining days. It was a nightmare. The original doctor in charge of addiction has left - he was their only asset. so THINK TWICE.

I spent 60 days at Big Island Recovery and thank god! It sounds like you still are not ready to surrender. They treated me with respect and have fabulous homes and a great staff. 7 days you need help!

i agree with Larry C... Big Island Recovery is a God Send. They have helped a lot of people who are extremely happy... This just sounds like sour grapes to me from someone not ready to commit.

I live on Oahu and have heard negative reports about the Big Island Recovery.

Yeah, you are right. I do have sour grapes. Big Island Recovery is just not for everyone. So to elaborate on the safety issue (ie explain the grapes). This is what happened - 1) a residential facility simply cannot have an unlocked door policy when men and women are housed together and the night attendant is asleep on the couch 2) I was given my medication by the nurse - it was the wrong pill 3) I witnessed physical violence between two house members 4) I had one one-on-one session with the addiction doctor in severn days 5) the director yelled and spat in my face "what is your problem" when I asked to leave. Yes, some people can be helped there, it just was not for me. 7 days was enough for me @ BIR - clean and sober over 10 months now...

Whomever you are Chelsee or Pua, good for you for staying sober. been there, done that. I was in a California treatment facility and left after 3 days! It is impossible to focus on sobriety when you are concerned about your personal safety. hypnotherapy and believe it or not relocating helped for me. Carol S

Thank you Carol for your nice words. Sorry for the confusion. I commented from Chelsee's computer so it went under her name - she was encouraging me to elaborate of the safety issue. She also was the one advising me to speak to a therapist before entering Big Island Recovery. I should have listened - I would have avoided the horrendous experience and save thousands of $. So for everyone out there, considering residential treatment. Just investigate the place, and talk to people - friends, family and professionals. There are many treatments available out there and as I said before, Big Island Recovery is not for everyone. God Bless, Pua

Big Island recovery is a joke. I spent a ridiculous amount of money only to deal with Steve's (program director) manic behavior and ignorance. He called me a c*unt the second day I arrived. I went to BIR when it first opened because of a doctor I sincerely trust who specializes in addiction medicine, he helped start the "recovery center" This doctor left after two weeks because of the chaos and lack of treatment there. Not to mention Steve threatened to kill him and ended in a restraining order against him. This stress was a fabulous way to detox peacefully. I was at high risk for seizures...sometimes they would remember to give me my medication but most of the time I had to remind them and they would still forget. After the Dr. left there was absolutely no organization or properly trained staff to assist patients in need. I believe that Steve purposely encouraged people to relapse so they will stay longer and he can make more money. During my three month stint there I also feared my safety especially after a patient shattered a glass candle on the pool deck. He was HIV positive. Did this person get kicked out for his behavior? Of course not! I understand my recovery is my responsibility and have maintained sobriety for some time now due to a real rehabilitation center elsewhere that actually has structure, rules, and trained professionals who provided me with the tools I so desperately needed. Lets just say that I broke every single rule at BIR and never suffered one consequence, I drank and even got laid! In my recovery I have learned that I need consequences so I can learn from them and become the person I want to be not the addict I was. I believe that this place has and will kill people who suffer from addiction. For those who have passed away, one of them being a dear friend of mine I miss him deeply and I know he had a chance if he would have received real treatment. Everyday it reminds me that this disease kills, not just the person but those around them. I love you man! Big Island Relapse Club was not only a waste of money it was a waste of life. If you are searching for an affordable effective treatment center I would recommend Sundown M Ranch in Washington state. It changed my life. They really do accept most insurance companies and if you are ready and willing to go to any length make the call that might just save your life. God bless.
