I realize every trainer and student's experience is different, however, I'm currently in a WAR with ABC (apparently my own PRIVATE war, since they don't return phone calls), so I would like to tell you my horrific experience: First off, I was told that there would be a 1-on-1 mentorship w/an Animal Behavior College trainer after we observe & assisted the trainer with classes. I later discovered that these classes were basic Petco-like classes that anyone could sign up for, for $100 (as opposed to paying $2745.00 to enroll through ABC like I did). The classes were run by a trainer who had her own separate business, and I got the feeling that she clearly had no intention of helping us progress.

The trainer was unapproachable, unfriendly, and I learned nothing that I couldn't learn in a Petco puppy-training class. It was a joke! From day one, the trainer wore us out by constantly complaining to the two of us ABC students about ABC - how she has never liked working as a contracted trainer for ABC, nor did she enjoy 'taking on ABC students' (as much as she complained, I could not figure out for the life of me WHY she DID work with ABC if she disliked the company THAT much.).

After observing the first 6-week class (one hour a week for 6 weeks), it took a month and a half to be assigned to another 6-weeks of the EXACT same class. ABC claimed this 2nd 6-week-class would be different in that I would be “participating and assisting, rather than simply observing. I couldn't believe that this next set of classes were identical as the last one (same trainer, same beginner class, same 'sit, stay, down' material, same everything).

One evening, after class (concerned that I would only be observing the same Petco-style class again), I ask the trainer when we (I) would be assisting her. The trainer became frustrated & told me that ABC students are simply NOT READY to assist & that the only thing we could do to learn more (other than our OWN personal research) was to observe her amature classes (basically like any non-ABC student). Then she bluntly said there would NOT be a mentorship & she was tired of ABC sending her students who expected to assist in HER classes!!!

I then called my ABC Program Manager to discuss my concerns. I would NOT have signed up for this program, had I known I would simply be observing the same $100 Petco-style class. I knew it was getting close to my refund deadline, so I asked the Prog. Mgr. if what the trainer was saying was true. he Program Manager suggested this was a misunderstanding & that there WOULD be a mentorship.

I am assuming ABC must have contacted the trainer, b/c shortly following my discussion w/ABC, I was told that the trainer wanted me 'out of her class'! Then I received an inappropriate, threatening call from the trainer, yelling on my voice mail about how angry she was that I talked to ABC about her class and that I better (...and I QUOTE...!) 'fix it, or else... Knowing how inappropriate it was for her to leave this message on my voice mail, I called ABC for support. The ABC person I spoke to cut me off, saying 'I don't think our trainer would lie to us' . Insulted and infuriated by this (as if she was suggesting I WOULD lie), I could no longer contain my patience w/ ABC, and I wanted to speak to someone at a higher level... someone who would listen to my side of what happened.

I tried to contact ABC reps at higher levels, but noone at any other level would return my phone calls (and I called SEVERAL times, to several different ABC offices, only to be told 'noone was available to talk about refunds' and that they would call me back... but they never called me back... EVER!)Instead of calling me back and listening to me, ABC simply sent me a letter w/a list of FABRICATED, FALSE reasons why I was terminated from their program. I truly believe the trainer was dishonest to save her position, but either way, at the very least, someone at ABC should have called me back to discuss/listen to my experience, if not just for the sake of professionalism.

I gained absolutely nothing but frustration from my ABC experience. You can get the exact same 'education' by attending a $100 Petco class 3 times in a row. I asked for a 50% refund, which I felt was more than fair given the unique situation & the fact that noone called me back to listen to my side. ABC only refunded me $408.89 of the $2745.00 paid. They said this was all they were obligated to refund me, since I signed a refund policy upon enrolling. But they seemed to have forgotten that I also signed papers that stated I would have a much more elaborate training program w/ a one-on-one mentorship, etc... which was clearly FALSELY ADVERTISED.

I have filed a report to the Better Business Bureau, as well as the Bureau of Public and Private Vocational Education, and am waiting for their reply. I have also contacted the Vice President (several times) of ABC - but she has not called me back, and I have also contacted Steven Applebaum (ABC's president), and am also waiting for his reply.

I had a very similar experience w/ ABC and could not agree MORE. What's wierd is that I truley don't believe that Steve Applebaum ("president") exhists as an A.B.C. affiliate at this point, even though he supposedly started the company. When I had the exact same experience in Calif., I became so frustrated by their lack of response, I drove to their office in Northridge, CA.. I drove to the address Steve Applebaum had listed on a website as his OFFICE and suite number...only to learn that this was a flakey P.O. box, in a shadey part of town. When I went to A.B.C.'s main office at a different address, I learned it was a shadey, flakey couple of rooms devided by cubicles and NO office for the president, even though this office location told me on the phone that Steve works THERE, but he was not available to talk (every time I called). Shadey, shadey, shadey!!

As of 3 days ago, I was informed by Animal Behavior College that I was being terminated as a student. The bases for this was a conflict I was having with the externship trainer that ABC sent me to. Well, let me give you a little background information first:

When I first signed on as a student at Animal Behavior College, I was very anxious to begin. I started reading my course work on-line before my materials even arrived at my house. I live in Georgia, so it did take a few weeks for my materials to make it to my house.

I remember being a little concerned by the layout of the on-line curriculum. I was hoping that when my materials arrived, they would be easier to read. For those of you who have not had the experienced Animal Behavior College, first hand, maybe I should explain. When my "books" arrived, I was shocked to find 2 very large 3-ring binders containing what appeared to be poorly xeroxed copies of pages which were one - sided, double spaced, and black and white. The wording was repetitive and geared toward a very remedial reader. The sheer simpleness of the text made it difficult for me to read. Every chapter began the same exact way and the "text" was nearly a joke. Not to mention the fact that ABC provided me with so-called practice tests, which were the exact same test as the exams!

If the materials weren't bad enough, when it came time for my externship to begin, the closest trainer they could find for me was in Athens, which is 35 miles away from my house. According to the contract I signed when I enrolled in ABC, the promise to find you a trainer within 15 to 20 miles from your home. I was driving 70 miles round trip. I may have been able to overlook the distance, if only the trainer had been even slightly professional. She was an absolute nightmare. From day one, she cursed in class ( and I am not talking about saying darn it, I am talking the "F" word and all) and she degraded and ridiculed me from the day I met her. Of course, I was not the only one she flung her sacractic remarks at, her paying clients were subjected to the same fate! I was appalled that anyone would talk to their clients in this fashion. ----and it wasn't just her, her mom was there with her most of the time, just shaking her head and kind of smiling to herself, but never asking her to stop.

After complaining to my coordinator, and waiting for over a month, I was sent to another trainer. This trainer was much closer to my house, however, she did not teach classes or even give lessons! Her business was board training dogs out of her house, so there was not even a kennel where I could go to watch her. Anytime I would ask her if I could come watch her, she would tell me that she did not work any specific hours, but just worked with the individual dogs for a few minutes at a time through out the day. While I understood this, I didn't see how I was going to learn anything from it. ---- I ended up asking for another trainer after this one pushed a dog on me who ended up biting my son quite hard. When I originally protested (the same day she took me and my daughter out to work with police protection dogs-----did you get that, ABC is about positive training principles and about training pets, NOT POLICE DOGS!--yet this is who they sent me to!) and when I told her I was unsure about taking the dog home with me, she claimed that I was afraid of dogs and said she didn't know why I was even trying to be a dog trainer! (for the record, I already had 9 dogs of my own and 6 of them were English Mastiffs-- and most of them were rescues--- so if there is anything I'm not, it's afraid of dogs!!!) This trainer had also told me from the beginning that she did not want me to give her my paperwork that was to be sent to ABC. She said that she wanted me to fill it out myself and said she would sign it and send it in. The last day I was with her, she actually made fun of me for paying ABC and laughed about it. She then went on to state that I would never learn how to be a dog trainer without getting out there and doing it myself. She also stated that she didn't see how my following her around was going to help me at all. ==== As you can imagine, at this point, I called my coordinator and asked for a different trainer.

The 3rd trainer they put me with was even further away from my house. I was having to drive to Marietta, which is a 2 hour drive with traffic. I completed a 3 week (2 hour) puppy class with her and also met her in Atlanta 3 Sunday's in a row to walk one of my dog's around to be the destraction dog for one of her private lessons. Now, you need to understand, when I met her on Sundays, she would just have me walk parrallel to her and her client with the distance varying from 10 feet apart to about 25 feet apart. So, even though I was there, I had absolutley no idea what she was saying to the client. I still can't figure out how this could have helped me in anyway, yet, she too, stated that I should just add these days to my total number of hours needed for my externship and she would sign whatever I wrote! So, once again, I felt like if I was ever going to actually learn anything, I needed to call my coordinator again.

So, here I was again with the trainer that I originally started out with. The trainer who cursed and was openly rude to everyone. I was at the point that I felt like I could overlook everything just to get my externship complete.

Shortly after going back, I was informed that the trainer felt like I needed to start over from the first class, so I was back to the beginning of my externship. Can you imagine how upset I was. Well, I was determined to finish. I actually got through the first series, my observation classes. I was going into my 3rd week of participation when I was terminated for offering to help one of the trainers student's find a collar that had been recommended to her by the trainer! (She said I was out of line and that I should not ever offer to help anyone else's client do anything!) Did I mention that my offer was made on a week that the trainer was not there, only her mom, and that we had the discussion across a room within the parameters of the class. My point is, there was nothing secretive or sneaky about any of this. The lady needed a specific collar and had been unable to find it. I knew where to get one, so instead of disrupting class, and wasting everyone's time, I gave her my number and told her to call me and I would tell her where to get the collar. ---I never dreamed this was not allowed. I should be banned from nearly every pet store I go into, because my personality is one where I am constantly offering to help people find things they need. Who would have ever thought someone would get so angry over this?

so, now you have the outline of my story. Yes, this means that there is actually more, but I think you get my meaning. I do plan to call a lawyer, because after all I have been through, I feel like I deserve much more that $408 back!

I would like to state I have and continue to have a wonderul experience with ABC. It seems to me that you three area bunch of complainers who could not keep up to your end of the bargain either. Maybe if you did what you were told rather than approaching trainers in their place of business and their paying clients in an inappropriate manner you would have had beter experiences. Just because you think you are ready to be a dog trainer does not mean anything. That is your opinion. Why dont you learn to take some constructive critisism. All of you sound like individuals who I would never trust to train my dogs. If your mentor and the school had problems with you than perhaps it not the shool or he mentor but yourselves that you need to evaluate. The following statement is so obserd to myself I had to share it with the rest of you it was taken from Renee Stevens comments, "The sheer simpleness of the text made it difficult for me to read. " If it was so simple why was it so hard for you to read. Maybe you werent trying hard enough. As for the president of the company, I would like to say how many of you have walked into taco bell and seen an office for their president. Another point, how often to you expect the president to be in the office with all the confrences and seminars on dog training being held all over the country. Maybe if you ever went to a conference or seminar you would know these sorts of things.Anyway as I stated before I love ABC and will continue to refer people there.

I hope you take the time to find a professional dog trainer to work under..there are many of us that take assistants and train them...I have been blessed in 25 years to have mentored 4 wonderful people.

Take a look at AKC affiliated dog training facilities..and go to dog trials...read books...go to seminars and you may find your love for dog training will survive a bad experience...don't give up!

Your experience doesn't surprise me..we hear of all these certificates that mean NOTHING to the serious dog trainers. Please understand anyone can create a certificate!!! Hopeful trainers and students be aware of these scams. Our state of Pa. has no legal-license for trainers which makes all consumers targets.

GOOD LUCK.

Ok so I'm looking at this from a TOTALLY different perspective. I had worked in ABC corporate several years ago, and know the company from that viewpoint, as well as having taught classes for what was then ABTA (sister company) and also have been a mentor trainer for the company. I had been a dog trainer for over 15 years privately before I found out about this company, and I had friends that worked there so I contacted them. I apprenticed under Debbie Kendrick for many months and became good friends with her and know her training styles. THen I went to work in their corporate office as well as teaching group for them. While I had trained for many years privately and worked under a variety of trainers, she taught me to teach group and have fun with it.

First off, Steve DOES exist, and he does have an office at their main location. Or at least he did at that time. I visited their offices a few months ago and no, it's not a few cubicles, it's a few floors with offices. And note: Steve CAN be very hard to get a hold of, he is a very busy man, as is Debbie a very busy woman. She is a caring dog lover and a great person, but these guys run a very large company!

As for the mentorship program, I personally at least at the time found the reading to be fairly basic, mainly because it's geared towards a variety of people. Many of the people that come through the program have never handled a dog before. It needs to be geared towards a wide audience. But it does give a good overview of things a trainer may need to know. Granted, NO program will make someone a master dog trainer in a few months or even a few years...but you have to start somewhere.

For the mentorship, it's not always easy to find trainers that want to take on students. Look at it from the private trainers viewpoint. What purpose does it serve them to train someone who wants to be their competition some day? I have had several fantastic ABC students come through who came with a good attitude and in fact my dearest friend (who is now like a sister to me) I met through the mentorship program. She has stayed training with me for almost 3 years now. Then, I've had some really awful students. They come to my classes and start wanting to teach MY paying students with or without my permission. It IS a valid response for a trainer to determine when the ABC student is allowed to teach THEIR class. If a trainer feels confident that the apprentice can handle it, they can choose to let them do it. Otherwise, you couldnt pay me enough to ruin MY professionalism by putting someone I don't have confidence in up in front of MY students. These trainers are not employees of ABC. They have contracts with them to teach the students. But even I told ABC when I started with them that I wanted the option to accept or deny a student before taking them on. This was important to me. I had several horrific students come through. One showed up to my class DRUNK. Then I had another one try to "get in" with my vendor spots and steal my client list. I had another student try to berate me in front of my students, and other students act like "know it alls" because they did some reading (please note I've been training since 1985, I know what I'm doing and don't appreciate newbies challenging everything I say). After the one student tried to steal some of my clients and destroy a training partnership, I requested that I not receive any more students. Every now and then they ask if I want to try again. Maybe some day. I DID after all meet one of my best friends through the program. SHE is an EXCELLENT trainer. What made her different? she came in with the attitude that she wanted to learn to train dogs, and she knew she didn't know everything because she paid to do some reading. She asked a LOT of questions and kept quiet, taking notes during the observation stage. When participation with a dog came along she acted like a student and tried to learn as much as she could. WHen her chance to apprentice with me came along I DID have her teach many of the principles directly to me so that I could find out if she could teach competently though I did NOT let her teach in front of my class initially. She has since then joined our local dog training club (under my advice) and titled a few dogs, read everything she can get her hands on, and now, though she's graduated from the program, NOW I am completely confident in her abilities and willingly refer to her when needed. I can send her to teach a class for me comfortably any time, and when I was injured she took on many of my private clients. I trust that she wont' steal from me, and yet I'm willing to send her dogs I don't want to work with. So what was the difference in my care for her verses some of the other students that came through?

Walking in and pretty much demanding that a trainer allow you to teach for them, will never get you anywhere. Walking in and acting like a know it all with a trainer in front of THEIR students, will never get you anywhere. And walking in and telling a trainer that you are going to be a trainer and open up a school in their neighborhood and demanding that they teach you all their secrets so you can steal their business is not going to get you anywhere. They are simply required to teach you basic skills and grade you on those skills. They are required to make sure that you teach competently, but they CAN just ask you direct questions and grade how you answered them as well. If you're acting like a jerk with them or make them feel uncomfortable in any way, they are not required to continue with you. You would get this with or without ABC since most trainers have to start somewhere and the place to start is by mentoring under a trainer. Whether or not you go through ABC to get some foundation before that mentorship, you still have to deal with being good with a trainer that can mentor you.

Realize that you can learn something from EVERYONE. For the person that complained about the trainer doing police dogs...if you wanted to be a trainer, you might have learned some things from them. A good trainer learns from EVERY dog and EVERY dog trainer. Even if it's that you learn that you don't want to do what they're doing. But you DID learn. It's all in the attitude.

Would I recommend the program to anyone? Yes. I have. I like that it at least gives some basic knowledge before just throwing you in front of the public. But go in with the attitude that you are just in the beginning stages of learning to be a trainer. One thing it can do is help you to network and meet trainers in your area. If you go in with a proper attitude, you can come out better then when you went in. If someone is already a trainer, I might not push the program though if you want a certificate that's fine too. Just realize it is geared towards brand new newbies (at least in my book).

Hope this helps!
