These rip-offs must be punished for what they are doing!
Complaint Rating: 93 % with 358 votes
I received a collections notice from Afni, Inc., also Afni Collections stating that I owed Verizon Communications a bill for an outrageous amount of $637.25. I only owe Verizon for my current phone service.

Verizon stated that I only owe for my current bill. I have never at anytime ever owed Verizon this amount. If I ever did, I seriously doubt if I would have any type of phone service available to me today.

When I went to their website, it is a fake too! These ripoff con artists need to be stopped and prevented from pulling this with anyone else. Also from causing Verizon a needless bad reputation.

The phone number they are using on the bill they sent to me is not even my correct phone number. These rip-offs need stopped and punished for what they are doing and trying to do!

We also are getting the same from afni. They state that I have an outstanding account, in my name, from 2002 and that I owe verizon money. I called verizon about this and they had no information about us owing them any money at all, in fact we are very current with our bills with them. When I called afni to clear this matter up I was told that this was definately my account and he demanded that pay this money or the account would be turned over to the credit bureau. He also stated that the account was in my name and that they had all of my information and he wanted to give him that info to confirm that I was who I said I was, that was not happenning. When he tried to get this I knew something was not right! First of all our home phone service accont is in my wife's name, and has alway been that way since we have been married, 23 years. Secondly we have had a account with verizon since before 1999. Now you would think that if we owed verizon anything at all they would cancell our account with them. We also have a verizon dsl account on our computer for several years now.
The other day I got a big enevolpe in the mail from afni and it has a phony bill from verizon in it. I sent the cover page back to the telling that this is not my bill. I am waiting to see the reaction to that.
There has to be something that can be done to stop this company from making these false claims.

I have sent in a letter requesting that AFNI cease all communications due to a bogus request for money. They left me alone for about five weeks. I have now received three phone calls asking me to call them in six days. How can I get them to stop calling?

I too got a letter stating I owe AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) $244.47. I have NEVER had an account with either company. I checked my credit report and fortunately it has not shown up yet. I went to the web site and entered my accont number and got to the page that asked for my SS# number etc. DO NOT give this information to them as when you dispute it with experian etc... that is the kind of information that they will ask AFNI for to verify the validity of the account. I will file a complaint with the BBB and FTC... but has anyone thought of filing a complaint with the postmaster general? Isnt this mail fraud?

Just received a phone call from AFNI stating that I owed them $350.00 for Enterprise Rent a Car damage to a door. I had already paid the amount of $52.50 for the same door. (Damage was a small scratch and it was buffed out).

Now I am frightened that these people are going to ruin my credit.

My in-laws received a letter from AFNI in early Nov. of 2007... this letter informed them that they owed about $80 to Verizon... it listed their home phone number as the account in debt.

They asked me to write AFNI a letter asking for a verfication of the debt because Verizon does not offer local phone service in Miami 9-years ago and they have been loyal Bellsouth / AT&T customers for ages.

So I mailed them the letter requesting verification etc.

In late Feb. 08 they received a reply stating they had verified the debt. and attached a printout which only had their phone number and the amount of the debt ...that's it no official Verizon letterhead, no bill, nothing.

So I called them asking them what this printout was. They said it was verification -- I asked them what the charge was for because it did not list it. They said verizon -- at that point I explained that I could see it was Verizon but I wanted to know what service? I.E. Local Phone Service, Long Distance etc.

He said he did not know but since the debt had been verified I had to pay. So then I asked if I could get an itemized bill or some sort of bill from Verizon showing the missed payment or showing what the service was. He said cause the debt was so old they did not have anything else. But that the debt was verified and it was a long legal process to do that.

He said I had to provide proof that I did not owe the money. I kept explain how do you I prove something if you cannot tell me what service I need to prove I didn't have.

Needless to say I am lucky I work for a local tv station and they will be aware tomorrow of this mess. BBB, AG, etc will be notified.

I cannot believe there is not a law or regulation that requires them to provide a bill that has the service listed.

I also just received a letter from Afni saying I owe money to Verizon for a 914# and I haven't lived on the east coast in 9 years. The only Verizon # I ever had was a 201 #, so I knew something was up, and then I found out that it was a scam. How can this go on???

I received a "second" letter from Afni claiming that I had not responded to their first attempt to collect a debt. Probably because I never received a "first" letter. I sent a letter to Afni, to both IL and WA state Attorney General as well. Afni responded to complaint I filed in WA saying that it is their desire to work with consumers to assist them in resolving the questions and concerns sbout their account. They went on to say that the consumer, (me) is welcome to contact them or can manage their account online. They also enclosed a copy of the supposed bill. The bill is in mine and my late husbands name, which right away tells me it is a fake. Everythign was in my name, and the date on the original bill is the date he died, yet they show phone calls being made over the next 2 months after he passed away. Not to mention the fact that I no longer lived at that address, and we did not have a land line in the house. A roommate that we had at the time also recently received a collection notice, for the same address and approximate time poeriod, but is shows a different phone number. So what, we had 2 phones in the house? I don't think so! I find it hard to believe that if I were the one making the calls, that there were no calls to my husband's family, none to mine, and none to my place of employment. This whole thing is a scam, they are buying old bills, and trying to attach them to someone, ot they are bogus all together. Whatever the case, don't pay them anything!

I also received a collections letter from Afni, Inc. wanting me to make a settlement offer on an overdue account of $122.02 with Charter Communications. The big problem here is the fact that I have NEVER had any kind of an account with Charter Communications in my entire life.
I think something should be done about these issues and someone should be held accountable.

PLEASE see my note on the previous page. It details everything you need to do to get Afni to go away and leave you alone. It takes a little time and effort, but it works. Send complaints to your attorney general's office, as well as the office in Illinois.. use the letter I posted. Complain to the BBB. It works, believe me. They have closed my case and have left me alone, and my "bill" was around 1000.00.

Yesterday I received a letter from AFNI, Inc. stating that I had a debt from Cingular owing them $469.82. I have not had a Cingular account. First thing I did was contact Cingular and see what the letter was referring to and they could not help me because the Client creditor account # was not correct and was missing 1 number. It does not have a cell phone number on the bill therefore the rep. couldn't use that information either. She told me I needed to contact the collections agency that I received a letter from. I contacted AFNI and of course they were trying to get other additional information and I was rude and said "well apparently you have what you need you mailed me this letter" he was still trying to get more and more information. I didn't give to anything. He would not give me any information and said that they had bought the account over from Cingular and that Cingular (now At&t) would not have any information. This account was apparently past due since 1999. Go figure! He kept telling me that someone in my house must have used my information and got this account in my name. The only person living in my house was my 2 yr.old son. I wasn't thinking the company was a scam I just thought someone got my social and opened an account. They guy was very rude as well was I and I told him he would be hearing from my attorney on this matter. After hanging up the phone others in my office were saying it sounded like a scan and they came to this website where they showed me all these compliants against this company. This is crazy that this is probably going on credit when really something like that should be off your credit in 7 yrs anyway. I didn't ever have an account with Cingular and haven't EVER received any bills or any other information from Cingular. What exactly should I do in this matter?

I just recieved a letter 4/22/08 saying I owed Cingular $435.32
I have never had a cingular account. When I tried to call I got we can not accept your call right now as we are very busy. I got through later and the gentlemen told me this is from 2004-2005 I said no way he said then fill out a fraud form online which of course when I enter the info. nothing for me comes up. He also stated this is about to go on my credit, I said really I never received anything for 4 years and now this. I realize this is a scam and will also notify the bbb.

Why haven't these b*tards been stopped? I just got a collection notice from those thugs for a Cingular bill supposedly from '98...Cingular didn't become a company until 2000!!! My wife called the bogus line and they tried the usual method of "verifying" (phishing) her information and claimed the debt was valid and guess what "we can clear this up right now, with either a check or a credit card". After she complained and told the girl that she was reporting them to the BBB the girl hung up. Imagine that.

The cell number they claimed we owed on was obviously hacked off a website since the numbers were for a home phone and the last 4 digit were scrambled.

I wonder how many scared elderly people actually think that forgot to pay the bill and give those crooks their hard earned savings?

It is my guess that the majority of you people who got these bills never even bothered to contact Afni to inquire about the details on your bills. If you had, many of you would have realized that these accounts were, in fact, yours and you just happen to live in a state where the phone company is required to provide you service whether you have an old bill or not. I am appalled by the language and behavior that supposedly "upstanding" members of society display in use of language and attitude when posting these comments and I can only imagine how many of you spoke to the collections reps at the agency. I had an account with Afni that was fruadulent and was told by a representative to simply go to website and fill outa painless fraud affidavit. They investigated my claim and I received a release letter 4 weeks later. I strongly suspect that the ignorant people who are posting these nasty comments do, in fact, owe these bills and are trying to get something for nothing. Either that or they are too self obsessed and indignant to let the Afni staff help them in getting incorrect accounts cleared up. Keep in mind, the people answering phones at this company are just doing their jobs and have to follow the same policy for everyone whether you are a loser who doesn't pay your bills or a ceo of a multimillion dollar company.

I've also had to deal with Afni, Inc. What you have to do is send Afni, Inc a dispute letter and if Afni, Inc ignores the dispute letter the best thing to do is call the Attorney General Office in your state, tell them the situation and let them know that Afni, Inc. is harassing you, and you'd like them to please stop harassing you. The Attorney General Office in my state contacted Afni, Inc and a week later I received a letter from the Attorney General Office stating that my complaint has been settled. They also attached a fax letter from Afni, Inc. stating that they have closed the underlying account and will cease collections on the same. I do advice you to contact the Attorney General Office in your state, and ask them if they could please contact Afni, Inc. regarding this matter.

I hope this will work for you as it did for me...

The fight is on Afni, Inc... You can not win against the Attorney General Office, FTC.gov they are going to bring you down HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Afni, Inc are all liars, snobs and the agents are unprofessional losers……. Get real jobs

For those that are being harassed by Afni, Inc you have to file complaints with the FTC.gov and the Attorney General Office in your state and in IL. I would also file a complaint with the ACA since Afni Inc does not have a compliance officer that you could speak too…
