These rip-offs must be punished for what they are doing!
Complaint Rating: 93 % with 359 votes
I received a collections notice from Afni, Inc., also Afni Collections stating that I owed Verizon Communications a bill for an outrageous amount of $637.25. I only owe Verizon for my current phone service.

Verizon stated that I only owe for my current bill. I have never at anytime ever owed Verizon this amount. If I ever did, I seriously doubt if I would have any type of phone service available to me today.

When I went to their website, it is a fake too! These ripoff con artists need to be stopped and prevented from pulling this with anyone else. Also from causing Verizon a needless bad reputation.

The phone number they are using on the bill they sent to me is not even my correct phone number. These rip-offs need stopped and punished for what they are doing and trying to do!

I had a few questions, I hope someone can help me: (1) Even though this is fraudulent, can Afni still report this as a claim on the person's credit report? (I was told yes), (2) How is there not a class action suit yet about this if it's happened to so many of us? My father just got this for a bill we did not owe. Same exact thing as everyone else, letter stating "Collection Notice" from Afni, Inc. (P.O. Box 3427, Bloomington, IL 61702-3427), stating my Dad owes $466.84 for a Verizon phone bill from an old phone number of ours. We haven't used that number for about 12 years, so I was suspicious when my parents brought the letter to my attention, asking for help on clearing it off their credit. These rat bastards need to be brought.

I called Alltel & they would not give me any info. On this account. They told me to call Afni who had sent me the notice. I finally got a girl “Beth”. She said it was a past due balance. I told her I had never had service w/ Alltel & needed to know how to dispute it. She said maybe it was a company that merged & I told her NO I’ve been w/ Sprint for many years. She said Yes Alltel bought Sprint out. I told her NO in fact Sprint bought Nextel out & she needed to get her facts straight. So, I hung up & just wrote a letter to them stating it was Not my Debt! I will make a copy & mail to them. I know it’s only 26.45 but it’s NOT my debt and she was a rude Bit*h!

Do not pay (unless you know the bill is yours and the paper trail exists). Right now, it is old enough that it can't be reported on your credit file. If you make a payment, the collection agency will try to claim that the most recent activity is your new payment, and reset the 7 year reporting limit. If you do pay, get in writing from them first that all reference in your credit report will be removed if you pay.

Do not pay, always dispute. Afni investigated and said they will take no further action and the account is now closed.

Relax folks,
I also received a collections notice from these scampers less than a month ago.....I had a cell phone over 10 years ago in NY while transfered there on a 3 month temp job. When the job was finished,I headed back home and paid any/all bills in full.

Imagine my surprise when I opened a letter from AFNI demanding $673.95, listing my old phone number (my phone bill was never even close to $600 total!). I knew I didn't owe it, and after reading what many of you have been through with these maggots - my blood was boiling!

So I went to the NY City Consumer Financial Justice Project website (http://nedap.org/resources/documents/CeaseLetter.pdf) and wrote my own dispute letter. The next day, armed with $4 to send it registered, I sent it to AFNI in Bloomington, IL.

Imagine my surprise when , I opened a letter from AFNI today (surprisingly the letter shows addresses of :404 Brock Dr, PO box 3427, Bloomington, IL 61702 AND PO Box 20939 Ferndale, MI 48220) and the letter states;
"This letter is to inform you that we have investigated your dispute related to the referenced account. Based on the investigation this account has been closed. AFNI, Inc will take no further collection action."
.....What a bunch of blood-sucking scammers!

And oh yes, I filed complaints with Verizon of NY, Federal Trade Commission, ACA international, NY City Dept of consumer affairs, NY Attorney General's office, Illinois Attorney General's office and my home state's Attorney General.

Now that I've noticed that they have a MI address, I will also file a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General's office...

So have faith people, if you push back- they will run like the cockroaches they are!!

I got not one but TWO letters from these scammers. The first one I disputed and they finally sent me the "we investigated and the account has been closed" letter. But for the second one, for a second, different phone number that I never had, they just sent me a letter saying that they would "honor my request not to communicate with you about this debt". So now I have to send a THIRD registered letter to these fools.

This has been going on for a long time and happening to a lot of people. Where are those regulatory agencies we pay for with our taxes? Why aren't they stopping this...
359 days ago by Marychain [send email]
Cj, did the second bill come at the same time as the first or several weeks later? On our second go around, we're still waiting for a reply from them with verification for another "account". They haven't replied in writing, but what seems like a rash of collection-type phone messages are now being left on our answering machine.

If all of you think that AFNI is a fraud company and just trying to scam you out of your money, stop and think, your in collections, that must mean (at least for the majority of you) that you don't have money, other wise you wouldn't have an acct. in collections. I dare each and every one of you to file a law suite against AFNI, guess how much more money you will have after having to pay for all of that, and then losing. If you feel that AFNI is fake then do somthing don't just sit around on the internet boo hoo-ing about how you are getting scammed. Oh by the way please tell all of the great! people on here how that lawsuit turns out would ya.

You are a bunch of idiots, AFNI is real, you owe a debt like most of America, get over it and pay your bills, then you wont hear from collections agencys any more. and oh by the way i agree with RPR go ahead and file your law suite and LOSE hahahahahsah

Rpr and Flkj, must be nice for you to be high school dropouts and still be able to find work at AFNI! Good for you!

These ANFI employees are awesome. I can't wait until they ship their jobs over to India and these F*#KERS loose their jobs. Well some of them are nice. They've bought into that whole training really well. I had a GF of my dad create an account in my name shortly after HS my records were at my dads house at the time. They've since broken up (like 10 years ago) and the other day I received a notice for collection. I recognized the number as my dads from back in the day because I have an excellent memory. I promptly responded with a dispute letter (form found on the internet). I'm not going to give them the time of day. It requests that they do not contact me. I have no interest in going after this vile woman because we're better off without her in our life. I'm not going to get uppity with my dad because he's in a nursing home, and is in failing health. There is no reason to drum up bad blood. The debt is so old that they can't report it, they can't collect it. My time is too valuable to deal with it anymore. This thread is full of people who are being taken advantage of by a firm who knows damn well they are buying noncollectable, and sometimes fraudulent debts. They will do very well off of it this year. Don't feel bad about asserting your rights. They are basically gambling that x% of people will respond with a gotcha, a promise to pay, or saying something stupid on the phone.
But to get back to my original statement I love how these high and mighty $7.50 an hour employees of this Debt Collector are so emotionally attached to their job. We can use dedication like this in human services, or the armed services, or even standard customer service. But don't sell yourself out for a company that will outsource your job tomorrow. Watch it's probably already happening. Good luck!

To Wowcollectionsrock:
I have a question for you, were you trained in the FDCPA or FCRA? No? How in the world did I guess? Let me tell you how, because if you were you would know that a debt can ALWAYS be collected on even if its 50 yrs. old, so don't tell people wrong information ok. For all of you great people complaining about AFNI let me tell you a little somthing. AFNI didn't make these accts. up, they were sold to them by a true and real company. A few examples, Verizon, Alltel, Cingular, T-Moble, Charter... the list goes on and on. I see some of you saying that you called that company and they had no records of a debt for you, well did you give them the original creditors acct. #, for those of you with letters from AFNI it would say the client acct. # next to it. Give that a shot and see if they can find anything then. The reason a customer service rep. can not pull up an acct. for you under your name, SSN, phone #, or address is simply because they no longer own the debt. A simple customer service rep. will not be able to assist you without the creditors acct. #. For those of you who are stating that your acct. is fraud, call AFNI talk to a collector, they will advise you of what to do in that case. For those of you stating that you have reported AFNI to whatever agency and were told that AFNI isn't a real company, you are all liers just trying to egg people on. And for the rest of you, just get off your as$ get a job and pay your bills, its a very simple concept, you use a service you pay for it. You allow some one to use the service for you, you pay for it. You see how simple that is. A 4 yr. old can understand that. For those of you who just feel that you shouldn't have to pay for something out of "princable" your pathedic. You agreed to the contract when you signed up for the service, you didn't have a problem with it then, but 2 months later when you just can't afford it any more you cancel stating that there was somthing wrong with the service, when infact there wasn't, to atempt at a very creative way to "steal" the service. So stop complaining about it and pay it, file a dispute, or file fraud. Oh and also Wowcollectionsrock just because you send a cease communication letter doesn't mean that the acct. is gone, it just means that AFNI will no longer contact you about it, so when you decide that you want what ever service was provided back then Good Luck!

Good Day!

TO RPR.

Wow dickhead. I guess you can't read. This in my case was fraud. It's confirmed, and the person may be dead.

Here are some facts.

In New Yorks state and many others. The statute of limitations for garnishment is 7 years. Fact. In NYS and all others, after the statute is passed you can't report to credit agencies. Fact if anyone is taken to court over a debt that has reached the statute you have to show up to court, but all you have to do is mention to the judge that the statute has passed and it would be thrown out. This is based on precedent. Guys like Rpr make their minimum wage living off of this shit. And again. I can't wait until his pathetic job is being outsourced to India, or some other god forsaken place where people can't even get credit.
I dont' care what kind of training you got, you still can't read. I didn't sign up for this service. i know the number I know who did, and I just don't need to get involved with that person again.
Go ahead and try to scare these people into paying. DON'T pay a debt you don't owe. Don't listen to anyone on this board. There are plenty of legal information sites that will tell you your rights. Just use Google. If everyone fights back with this crap these guys will loose their jobs.

I'm not missing any services. I have a half a million dollar house. (with a proper fixed mortgage) A lake property. Ohh and they both have verizon service. I have 3 cell phone accounts 2 cars. A very well paying job. and perfect credit. This is not my debt. Don't make judgments. They really must brainwash you guys into thinking everything you do is actually accurate.

Have fun on the unemployment line you worthless piece of shit!

Well I received my notice today. Sept.14.07. Now that I have read ALL of the postings on this site,I feel that I can respond. I have NEVER had an account with Verizon......never have owned a cell phone. We do our very best to pay the bills that we have. We, my husband and I, are over 50 years old and come from families that beleive that you work for what you want. That if you receive services for something then you PAY for it. This 'COLLECTION NOTICE' from Afni is bogus. I am not saying that all of them are, but the one i have is. I will continue to give Afni a chance to explain their mistake....that is IF they ever give a proper phone number, address or website. Folks...PLEASE BE AWARE OF ONES THAT TRY TO RIP YOU OFF.

ANFI is a real company, and they really did buy real debt from Verizon. This does include any company that Verizon ate up. Including GTE, Bell Atlantic, NYNEX Ny Telephone, and possible Bell Telephone in some place or another. I read someone got a collection notice for an account from 1976. The problem with ANFI is they bought very very old accounts that some may be virtually impossible to collect on. On the other hand, you may want to make sure it really is ANFI that sent you a collections letter, and not some scammer pretending to be them. Do not give out any real information on the phone, don't use their web site. Let them give you info, and confirm things. Don't admit to owing money unless you really actually do. Good luck.

TO RPR,
most collection agencies hire dicks like you to harrass people. you guys from ANFI are right up there with NCO. despite if a debt is legit or not gives you people no right to harrass people. You debt collectors have the burden of proof. You also have to follow the letter of the law according to the FDCPA.
there are plenty of people who have paid their bills and for some reason it isn't recorded with the company as being so. case in point my husbands pld cellular account from Verizon. I have the letterof payment. when we went to buy our house I had to call verizon because they had it in collection still. they still had it as unpaid in their records. good thing I had the letter with confirmation on it. it has since been removed.
Now that ANFI has bought all these accounts some may be legit, most are not. did verizon prove to you that these accounts are valid? and since Verizon has no more record of them I guess you people have a problem.

Since AFNI decided to harass me for a debt that I never owed. To all you AFNI apologists like Rpr - believe it - YOUR COMPANY MAKES MISTAKES!!!! I did my own investigation and was able to determine that AFNI uses highly questionable skip tracing techniques. If they cannot locate the original debtor they send the bill to anyone in the area with the same name. Ever look in the phone book? LOTS of people have the same names... The bill you sent me belonged to another person with the same name at a different service address that I never lived or did business in. And as far as your stupid fraud affi-davit is concerned: I should NOT have to prove that I do not owe the money - AFNI and Verizon should have to prove that I in fact do.

Well I held Verizon responsible for the harassment I have been subjected to by virtue of their using an unethical collection agency and failing to intercede on behalf of their customer to resolve this issue. Therefore I decided to deprive them of the legitimate accounts I have had with them for the last 30 years. In spite of otherwise good service I closed both of my current Verizon accounts and transferred my business to another telephone company. Furthermore I have used my influence to get at least one business to do the same. Verizon is as guilty as AFNI for failing to exercize control over their collection practices.

Rpr I hope you and your kind are very happy - Verizon lost three accounts because of YOU AND YOUR COMPANY!! Everyone here who has current accounts with Verizon should do the same - hit them in their pocket where it hurts the most!
350 days ago by Marie [send email]
Guys, verizon isn't using these people to collect. this company bought the accounts from verizon. Verizon has been paid for them. VNFI has all these accounts and can only assume they are all legit. Verizon makes mistakes, they don't always clear the account when its paid. I do see a class action lawsuit in the future. Any phone I have ever had I never gave a ss# as you didn't have to, now you do. I would never give my SS# over the phone. If any collector asks you to verify last four digits, tell them to verify it with you. and any account more than 1 or 2 years old I think they are going to have a hard time collecting.
350 days ago by Jimp [send email]
I still hold Verizon responsible for failing to screen the company they sold these accounts to and then failing to intercede on behalf of their customer (me) when advised of the error. They bear ultimate responsibility for this debacle.

I will NEVER do business with Verizon ever again!
