Castaway Pools and Spas

Never came back to finish the job!
Complaint Rating: 99 % with 126 votes
Castaway Pools and Spas installed a pool at my home on 4/5/07. They have never came back to finish the job despite numerous phone calls and letters sent to their office. Their salesman john refuses to answer any phone calls. I would advise anyone in the tristate area to be aware of this company. If this company is hired to install a pool at your home read the contract and beware that the are not responsible for any damage to your home or property. Do not under any circumstances make a payment until they are completely done. They seem friendly but are that lie and deceive the public.

Can someone tell me if Castaway has pulled up stakes. The phone number has been disconnected. I have had a pool upside down in my yard for 3 months and they have $18, 650 of our money. I have begged my husband not to proceed with legal action because I was so hopful that they would return our money like they promiced and come get this pool out of yard. Now I can't reach them. My husband is in the hospital and I am trying to resolve this. We need our money very badly. Any info would be appreciated.

Last I heard, they were closing the store but staying in business. They're all keeping a low profile because they know people are looking for them.
Try calling Kalai Excavation at 609-965-8763, they're at 2448 Route 50, Mays Landing.

Lets put it this way, they have to go home sometime!!!

Try 856-696-8882. That number seems to be working. I would file suit if I were you. Search web for judiciary in NJ.

HELLO, I HAVE BEEN HIRED ON BEHALF OF KOMATSU FINANCIAL SERVICES TO SECURE COLLATERAL THAT IS IN THE POSESSION OF CASTAWAY POOLS AND KALAI EXCAVATION. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE HAD SOME TYPE OF ALTERCATION WITH THIS BUSINESS AND I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK WITH YOU REGARDING THE MATTER. YOUR COOPERATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sounds like someone hasn't been making the monthly payments on their "one million dollars worth of equipment, trucks and tools."

These people are in the same position as the rest of us, Castaway owes them.

FYI, the phone number listed in the email is a cell phone. I am a little suspicious of the whole thing. Maybe I am paranoid, but I have Castaway to thank for that.

i have not heard from castaway pools in awhile...we still have not paid them in full as we are waiting for final approvals...are they still open?

Castaway's web site appears to be offline. I don't know whether it is shut down, or if the server they are on is down for maintenance, or what. The whole stupid mess is still online at www.deluxepool.com though.

Just curious...has anyone had their final inspections? We are still screwing around with all our problems...we can't close the pool until all the inspections, our pool is still leaking, there is still dirt that comes into the pool. As for the electric, my husband and I dug under the concrete to find the ground to the pool and then we cut open the concrete. Randy & George (the electricians) got the bonding done, so that has finally passed. But who knows how long that would have taken. Castaway, us and the electrician, got a letter from BVT, that we would be fined $2,000 a week, until the inspections were complete!
P.S. Has anyone tried to contact Castaway? The phone goes unanswered for the last several days.

P*ssed Off, who is the "we" that is going to get fined? You, the homeowner? This seems crazy to me, it's not your fault...they should be fining Castaway.

If my township fines me, that money will come right off the top of whatever Castaway says I owe them. Of course, most of us have already paid them most of what the contract amount was, so good luck getting anything out of them. Don't think that this is any accident, because it's not...those contracts are structured so that you end up paying most of the money when they drop the pool in the hole, so that then you can be left holding the bag for all of those other things like the fiber optic pool light, the solar and safety covers, the maintenance equipment, dirt removal, chemicals, and on and on...these things are not cheap. Castaway added things onto my contract for up charges that seemed (at the time) too good to be true...well, guess what? I never got those things. Another way to scam the extra dollars out of honest people's pockets. Big freaking' deal, my final payment per the contract was less than a grand, stupid stupid stupid. I will never be taken like this again, if I am negotiating a contract for something like this in the future my contract will be full of deadlines and penalties, and if the contractor doesn't want to sign on for it, well then I guess I can find someone reputable who will.

This whole fiasco was an intelligence test and I failed.

You are not alone, we all failed. I check this company out with the BBB and just for the heck of it, it keyed in complaints against Castaway Pools and nothing came back. That was in Feb when we signed our contract. In June, it looks like all hell broke loose! I only wish I knew when the BBB updated their files, maybe we would not have been pulled into this scam!

Also, I would like to apologize to the two families who came out to our home and to the two who called me on the phone. On March 26th, when the pool was dropped, everything was A-OK. Never to know, that we had to BEG for them to come back a month later and do the electric and over a month for the concrete.

Only to find out in July, that this was a scam, the pool was put in without permits and when they applied for the permits a month later, the check bounced! and to top it off, Castaway was well aware of the problem.

Also, through the grape vine, we were told that we were a**holes and nothing would please us, my husband was a drunk! And best of all, we begged to have the pool installed without permits. Lies after lies after lies!

As for being fined, it was for all parties involved. We would all have to go to Trenton and fight it out!

I have had an issue as well, I have filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Agency in Vineland. They can not discuss other complaints but any that have been received have been forwarded to the attorney general's office. At first I felt bad filing a complaint until I realized how many other people have been lied to and cheated. I now have a pool in my back yard that is running, but has not passed inspection, the pool light was never installed and sand and dirt are sinking around the edge.

I just had another pool company come today to install the light and they indicated that a hole was never put into the pool to install the light, the sand filter was connected so that if I want to change the sand all of the connections have to be sawed off, and replaced. The handrail, and the cleaning equipment along with the light never materialized and not only will I have to pay a landscaper to remove the additional dirt, he will have to regrade and remove additional concrete so that water will not run into the pool - which will cost additional monies. At this point, I am not planning on paying another dime to John Sr. or Castaway based on the additional costs that I will accrue to repair issues that will have to take place to pass inspection.

John Sr. seemed so nice, until I refused to pay additional charges that were not on the proposal or on the building permit-nor that I agreed too! When I indicated that I would not pay for anything else until the light was finished and passed inspection he hung up on me. During a later phone call, he then threatened to take me to FEDERAL COURT - when I indicated that he was lying he just started yelling at me, so that I couldn't speak.

I have never dealt with such an individual and initially had some sleepless nights. Apparently this is how they deal with people to get what they want. I have been reading this blog for several months but this is my first entry, I am truly disgusted that people can get away with this type of scam.

What's really amazing to me is that the song is the same every time. Lesley, you just repeated what I said two posts ago, which is what happened to me, and what I have heard has happened to others.

And they are going to take you to court, right? I'm sure that they would do great in court, they have such a wide variety of experience with the legal systems in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

They know all the answers, and use threats and lies most effectively. I imagine that this sort of garbage works 90% of the time, especially when screwed-over customers have no way to communicate with each other, and really have no idea that others exist. Let's be thankful for this little web site, because it has really opened my eyes to the sort of cr*p that these guys are capable of....and it better prepares me for what comes next. It was only 2 weeks after I signed the contract when I suspected that things were not going to go smoothly. Boy was I ever right, and I hate being right.

I guess we have to close our pool with the leak and the dirt/sand all over the bottom. I don't know about Castaway, I have been calling for a week without any answer, it goes to voice mail...have they skipped out???

Also, has anyone closed their pool? Who did you get to do it? Around here they don't want to deal with fiberglass pools.

I have contacted Trilogy Pools because that is the type of pool I have to find out how to winterize a fiberglass pool. Of course Bill this areas sales rep will not return my calls. He hasn't for several months. I called Trilogy back and spoke with the operator and she transfered me to one of the owners who never returned my call. I called again and spoke to the operator who took my info and said she would speak to someone who could help me. I called again yesterday and left a message for the person who handles customer service in our area. I still have not heard back from them. I hope they don't turn out to be a little "castaway". I will be filing a complaint on this great website about Trilogy. God bless this website and all of you who communicate. We must stick together and stay in touch. I have file a law suit against Castaway and am waiting for the judiciary system to help. The attorney general called me back again to put together a final settlement that hopefully castaway would agree to pay me. I'm not holding my breath. I'm just hoping the judiciary system work... thanks to all of you for sharing your information.

Maybe Trilogy is pissed at Castaway because they haven't been paid or something. It's certainly not out of the question. Unfortunately, you are on the wrong side of it all, just like the rest of us.

I don't think winterization is any different than a vinyl or concrete pool. Lower the water below the skimmer, blow out all the lines, plug them up so they stay dry...

Why not try calling Piper pools? I believe they do service, no reason why they shouldn't want another customer...and while they are working, you can swap Castaway stories.

I noticed that Castaway's web site is back up again, updated with a new "Special Offer" for the fall:

"Take advantage of these special Fall savings now! Up to $3500 OFF your pool!"

I guess Castaway is done with "focusing its resources on resolving its existing customer issues" (like John said in his email to 6ABC), and is now back to business as usual... scamming new people! Hopefully new people will check the BBB web site and see that Castaway's membership was REVOKED in September. That's one good thing that has happened as a result of all of this, maybe new people will see it and STAY AWAY.

I cannot believe these #$@# are back in business. I drove down there twice the last couple weeks and the place looked abandoned. I just called up and spoke to someone who was ready to sell me a #@$%# pool. I asked for my 10grand deposit back and he hung up on me. We canceled all summer vacation and extra activities for the kids this past summer expecting a pool. NOTHING... but the disappointed look on my kids faces every time they come from school and look at a blank backyard. I just got an email from someone here who went down there and saw John, and he was driving a new truck. This is about to get nasty.

He's back! Saturday, I drove by the store, because the phone has gone unanswered for over a week. I guess Dave took off. Anyway, the store lights were flashing open and there was a new truck out front. I drove by and was going to let it go. Further down the road I said to myself, no I can't let it go, I turned around and went back. I walked up to the door and they were locked. So I called on my cell phone and asked if they were open, I had a problem with my pool. The guy who answered said, sure we are open, I said well the doors are locked. That voice, you know what I mean, was so familiar. And then it happened, JOHN JR! came to the door and opened it! We had a heated discussion, which got nowhere, but to me it felt good to get it off my chest.

The killer thing was when he said how can we do warranty work on our pool when we owe them $1800, he was doing the bills! I flipped out, I told him he was not getting another dime from us and I know exactly how much we owe you. It is nowhere near $1800! I told him after everything that we had been through, you will owe us money. Our pool was closed since 8/3 by the building inspector as an UNSAFE STRUCTURE. So at $503 a month, for our pool payment times three month is $1509. I also told him that Castaway Pools, the electrician and us got a letter from the BVT building inspector, that we all would be fined $2,000 a week for non-compliance of the permit issues. I told him that on 10/8 the electrician and us, cut the concrete so that the bonding test could be done and Castaway never showed up. Castaway, may still be held liable for that, because they never showed up!

I also confronted him on the comments that we were asshole and my husband begged him to put the pool in without permits-guess what, he denied everything! I told him he was a liar and the permits were never even applied for until after a month after the pool went into the ground and that was paid for with a bounced check. He said that never happened. I said then why was it on 8/10, i got a call from BVT stating all permits were null and void until Castaways came up with cash, to pay for it. I also told him that the township called on 5/2 to let them know the check bounced and they never made good on it.

Last Friday, we had a pool company come out and do a pressure check on the pool because of the three colors of dirt on the bottom, he took one look at it and said that it was sand from the filter, MUSTARD & BLACK algae! All summer long we put up with this, I told him that, if is so called POOL experts, were so great, our pool would have been taken care of, way back in May! I also mentioned that, John told us that fiberglass pools don't get algae, they do! I told him that we were ready to close the pool, so he said, just close it. I told him that algae is a living organism and it will continue to grow so that we have a bullfrog green pool next year. He did not care. Also, he said that our filter was bad. I told him that we spent $150 for another pool company to come out and check the filter. Everything was replaced by Hayward. I told him that when the filter is shut off, it creates a vacuum and sand gets suck down into the lines. John said that that guy doesn't know what he was talking about. I said, what are the chances of getting a bad filter and having it replaced directly from Hayward, also being bad. My chances of getting struck by lightning are better. As I left the store, I said, I am well aware of your scams and you looked good on TV!

So did they take the "UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT" sign down, and put up the "UNDER OLD S*CKY MANAGEMENT AGAIN" sign? Not that anyone will notice the difference...

How are these crooks still in business?

And p*ssed off, I wonder what they are doing to the sand filters. There was another poster on here a while back who had a broken sand filter, with sand shooting back into the pool....that can't be a coincidence, I think it's more likely that Castaway is breaking them when they install them, rather than some manufacturing defect or something.

The people from Castaway are by no means experts on how these things are supposed to be hooked up. I installed a check valve myself on my pump because it kept losing prime, and would have to work for 5 minutes when I turned it on to re-prime itself and start pumping water. This is NOT NORMAL and is potentially damaging to the pump when it happens every day. I asked them 10 times to put a check valve in for me and they acted like it was no big deal...and never did it. It's like changing the oil in your car, it's easy to do but if you DON'T DO IT then you will ruin your engine.

It's also amazing to me that anyone can screw up a PVC pipe connection so badly. It ain't ROCKET SCIENCE, but so many people (including me) have had issues with leaks that they MUST be doing everything completely wrong, or not using ANY pipe sealant at all. And of course the best part is that these bad connections are UNDERGROUND now, perhaps under CONCRETE and COMPLETELY INACCESSIBLE.

Maybe we should arrange a little sting operation of our own, where we have someone call to buy a pool, set up an appointment at the house, and all of the dissatisfied customers can be waiting when he shows up....then we can have a little "group therapy" session, and he can explain how he's going to satisfy each one of us and our issues with his s*cky company.
