 When it comes to sunscreen, you don't want to play around -- you want the best sunscreen that will protect you and your family. But which one? There are so many to choose from it gets confusing. Use these guidelines to be sure you get the best sunscreen that is right for you.
Choose a natural sunscreen
Skin cancer is obviously bad. Unfortunately, the chemicals used in sunscreens can be just as bad and possibly cause cancer. The majority of off-the-shelf sunscreens have carcinogens like DEA and TEA, not to mention parabens, benzophenone, homosalate, and octinoxate. These chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption and can cause other skin problems.
To avoid these problems, try a natural sunscreen that doesn't contain them. Some sunscreens to consider are:
- California Baby SPF 30+
- Ecolani
- Alba Botanica
- Jason's Chemical Free Sunblock
These sunscreens are easy to find in health food stores.
Choose a water resistant sunscreen
Putting a sunscreen on and then swimming or sweating it off in the sun won't protect you from harmful rays. For this reason, always choose a sunscreen that is water resistant and will stay on after it has been applied.
SPF rating
The Food and Drug Administration has ruled that no company can sell sunscreen with an SPF rating of 50+ without proving it. Most sunscreens will now stop at a 50 SPF rating and research has shown that a sunscreen of more than 30 SPF isn't necessary for most people.
Brand name
Don't be fooled by brand names. A well-known name isn't a guarantee that the product works. Studies show that different brands have different levels of effectiveness even though they may claim to have the same SPF rating. Try different brands to see which one gives you the protection you need.
Remember when choosing sunscreen, avoid chemicals, use a water resistant sunscreen, check the SPF rating and don't pick one because it's a brand name alone. By choosing the best sunscreen, you can help protect your family from painful sunburns and cancer. |
