There's an old saying - "the eyes are the windows to the soul." There must be some truth to that - the eyes are one of the first physical features one notices about you.
If you weren't blessed with dewy doe-eyes, but would love to have them, don't be discouraged. There are some easy professional makeup techniques the experts use to transform small and boring to dramatic and compelling in just a few steps. With the right tools and a steady hand, your eyes can always be A-list-uber-fabulous (even on a D-lister's tight budget!)
Here's what you'll need:
(a) Light eye shadows in shades of champagnes, ivorys or light pinks for eye lid area
(b) Medium eye shadows in shades of brown for contours
(c) Very light eye shadows in ivorys to near-white for brow bone and center of eye lid
(d) White or beige eyeliner
(e) Black or navy eyeliner
Mascara in black or dark brown
Eye Lash Curler
Flat angled eye shadow brush
Good set of tweezers for shaping eyebrows
Directions:
1. Apply the light shadow (a) all over your lid.
2. In the very center of your eye lid, just above the iris, apply a "dab" of a shimmery, very light shade (c.)
3. Apply the medium contour shade (b) in the crease of your eye lid.
4. Also lightly apply the contour shade (b) to just the outer edge of your lower lid, meeting the shadow that was applied in the crease, sweeping in an upward and outward direction.
5. On the INSIDE rim of your eyelids (here's where a steady hand comes into play,) carefully apply the white or beige liner (d.) If your eyes are too sensitive, you are allergy-prone, you wear contact lenses, or just can't bring yourself to expose that area of your eye to makeup - you can skip this step.
6. Add a thin application of (e) black or deep navy eyeliner to the upper and lower lids.
7. Apply mascara to just the outer corner lashes, top and bottom, using two or three applications. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next one for more definition.
8. Curl lashes upward with the eyelash curler after the mascara has completely set.
Tips, Tricks and Secrets from The Professionals:
- When applying eyeliner to the outer lash line, gradually thicken the line as you go, and gently sweep it up at the outer corner.
- For extra oomph, faintly smudge a dark shadow underneath the lower lash line extending to the outer corner.
- To create the illusion of added "bigness," try coating only your upper lashes with mascara, with extra applied to the outer corner lashes, and curl as usual.
- Thinner eyebrows will make your eyes appear larger. If it's been awhile since you groomed your brows, opt for creating an upward sweeping brow, as opposed to a flat or slightly downward brow. Be careful not to make your brows too thin. Slow, meticulous tweezing and continuous evaluation is the key to creating the perfect brow. Lightly fill in any gaps or sparse areas with a brow brush and powder eye brow shadow. Use an eyebrow gel and brush to maintain brow shape throughout the day.
