How to Sell Old Cellphone

How to Sell Old CellphoneYour has-been cellphones may still have some resale value.

Web sites such as CellForCash.com, SellYourOldCellPhone.com, GreenPhone.com and CashOldPhone.com will generally pay between $2 and $200 for functioning phones that you are no longer using, depending on the make and model. These sites refurbish and repackage phones to be sold in markets such as India and Latin America.

Check around, as purchase prices will vary. For example, CashOldPhone.com offers to pay $48 for a Nokia 6102 camera-phone while CellForCash.com offers just $13 for the same phone. Some sites, including CellForCash.com, offer to match competitors' prices. You can generally sell phones that are up to four years old. However, "the 'sweet spot' for value is between one and two years," says Seth Heine, president of RIPMobile.com.

Most sites issue check payments, but RIPMobile.com gives gift certificates to retailers including CircuitCity.com and Starbucks. Sprint Nextel customers using the company's sprintbuyback.com get credits on their accounts. On the Web sites, you can typically print out a postage-paid shipping label or request a postage-paid box. Drop your phone in the mail and wait about 30 days for your payment.

Each site requires phones to power up, make a test call and have functioning features. Payments may be reduced for operational but cosmetically damaged phones. Make sure the service on the phone you send has been canceled and also delete your personal information. For instructions on how to erase your phone's memory, go to wirelessrecycling.com and click on "Phone Data Eraser."

You will find that SellyourCell.com pays more than others. You can also DONATE used cellphones at CharityCellphones.com where they let you pick where the money goes.

Hey....I just wanted to say that sellyouroldcellphone.com actually sends you money! I have sold several of my old phones to them. Just remember to read the terms because one my phones I sent was kind of scrappy and it was reduced, but they still sent money on it. Now I collect them from other people at school and family and send them in. It doesn't pay for college, but it sure helps me party hard once or twice a month!

CashOldPhone.com seems like a scam. It took them a month and a half to acknowledge receipt of my phone and then two more months before they said that the phone had too many scratches to be worth anything. While not perfect, that phone was in very good condition and I doubt many used phones would be in better condition. I'm paying the $6 they require to get the phone back, because I don't believe they are going to just recycle it.

"CashOldPhone.com seems like a scam."

Agreed! They took my phone, acknowledged receipt Feb. 2. Then sent email May 9 saying there was a keypad problem and they would just recycle it unless I paid the $6 to get it back.

Yeap! CashOldPhones.com did the same thing to me on a brand new pay per plan phone, said it was worth $45.00 then said it wasn't on the list, which it was, because that is why I sent it in to them, but now they want $6.00 to send it back?

I'm thinking scam!

sellyouroldcellphone.com is a scam. They received my phone on 2/16/07 and I have yet to receive a check (today is 6/15/07). They do not respond to e-mails, and also did not respond to my BBB complaint. They have an unsatisfactory record with the BBB (wish I had checked this before sending my phone).

Sellyouroldcellphone lost their domain name and has changed to sellmyoldcellphone. That much I learned when I couldn't access the website and somehow found a phone number for one of the employees on a press release. I wish I kept that number.

I used them once before and the service was great, so I sent them some other phones. Ever since they lost their domain name in May, I have had the same issue as above. They are not responding to my e-mail inquires and they have had my phones since May 25. Can't recommend them at this point.
