Hidden airline fees that leave golfers teed off | |
 GOLFERS, surfers, skiers and the long-legged have been moaning about it for years: the hidden extra charges on many so-called cheap flights make those bargain air tickets not such a giveaway.
The Evening Standard can today reveal the dizzying array of hidden charges that airlines are using to bolster their income.
A new web page comparing online air fares on cheapflights.co.uk reveals that no two airlines flying in Europe agree when it comes to eking extra money out of their passengers.
Aer Lingus, the gateway to some of the best golf courses in Europe, charges £25 if you intend taking your clubs with you. But if you fancy a round in Italy, Alitalia will charge £45 one way for taking the clubs.
Surfers and skiers do not fare much better. FlyBe emerges as one of the higher chargers, levying an extra £20 a time. If you were thinking about taking a windsurfer, best not fly Excel Airways: it will want £45 for the pleasure.
Most of the cheap airlines won't countenance you attempting to pre-book a seat, even if you are particularly tall. First Choice does, but will charge you £30 one way for extra legroom and £12 one way for any other particular seat you might want.
And don't break your leg before you fly Ryanair: they will charge you the cost of three seats if you still want to make that flight.
'Low-cost may not be be so low once you add charges for extra baggage, entertainment or a sandwich on to the ticket price,' said cheapflights' chief David Soskin. 'This website enables purchasers to make their selections based on their priorities.' |
