Check Your Bills For Inaccuracies | |
Consumers often take for granted that the amount listed on their utility and other bills is accurate. In an economy where every dollar counts it is imperative that you get in the habit of checking each billsaccount statement carefully to ensure you are not paying more than you should be on your regular monthly bills.
This problem has come to light recently in the state of Florida where consumers have been complaining about unauthorized third-party charges appearing on their local phone bill. There term describing this practice is known as "cramming" and describes charges for products or services not requested, authorized or used by the consumer.
This practice generally originates when a consumer accepts free coupons or other benefits over the Internet and without realizing it provides their phone number as part of the acceptance of benefits. The unsuspecting consumer later learns that they have inadvertently approved the purchase of an unwanted product or service which they get charged for on their local phone bill.
Your phone bill may not be the only bill that is subject to charges that you were not expecting to pay. You should check all of your bills regularly and pay close attention to charges that seem unfamiliar or out of place. In some cases these charges may be the result of human or computer error but if you fail to notify the company of the billing error you will end up losing money paying for services or products that you are not utilizing.
If you find charges on your monthly statements that you do not recognize you should immediately contact your service provider to bring the error to their attention. If you find that talking to the representative who takes the call doesn't result in a credit or explanation of charges you must request speaking to a manager who is authorized to credit your account.
To prevent billing errors in the future make it a point to make sure you understand any new services you may sign up for. Most cable and telephone companies charge installation or set up fees when you first begin using their service. Take a few minutes to repeat back to the representative what your expectations are and have them repeat what monthly fees you can expect to see on your bill. To protect yourself in the future you may want to take notes on your conversation paying attention to the name of the representative quoting your rates. |
