Can a Tankless Water Heater Save You Money?

Can a Tankless Water Heater Save You Money?Tankless water heaters -- You keep hearing about them but quite frankly, you're a little skeptical. A never ending supply of water? Lower electric bills? Lower water bill? Could all of this be true?

Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of tankless water heaters before you make your decision to buy.
Tankless water heaters

First, what is a tankless water heater? We're all familiar with the big hulking hot water heater that most of us have in our homes. The conventional hot water heater consists of a large tank that has a heating element in it. The tank stays full of water and the heating element keeps the water hot until you need it.

The obvious problem here is that the heating element is always running to keep this large amount of water heated so it is ready at a moment's notice. This is where the large utility bill comes in.

So if a water heater consists of a large tank and a heating element, how can a "tankless" water heater function? The answer is pretty much the same way -- just without the tank.

A tankless water heater consists of a cold water input tube that feeds water into the tankless heater. The flowing water activates the heating element and heats the water. A tankless water heater can heat 2-5 gallons of hot water per minute.

Pros:
  • Unlimited water supply
  • Lower utility bill...heats only the water needed
  • Small size takes up less space
  • Can't flood your home like when a tank leaks
  • Saves water
Cons:
  • Initial cost is more expensive than a conventional water heater
  • Can't fill a bathtub as fast
As you can see, there are more pros for buying a tankless water heater, but the ultimate decision is up to you. Weigh the initial cost against the years of savings to see which is best for you.

The tip on tankless water heaters is misleading at best as to operating costs. If you have an adequatly insulated hot water heater it is not running constantly. It runs mostly when you use hot water so the difference in billing is minimal. The claim it doesn't fill the tub as fast is just false. There are two sizes of residential tankless heaters the larger heater will deliver just as much hot water per minute as the regular heater unless of course you are using a fire hose to fill your tub. The primary advantage to the tankless heater is you never run out. My wife loves her tankless as she can stand under the shower as long as she wants. She just hands me the gas bill when it comes and I pay it for domestic peace and tranquility.

On my many trips to Asia, I encountered tankless water headers everywhere I went. I mean EVERYWHERE. And we all know what skinflints they are, so it must be a good idea.
