A Road Trip Checklist You Can't Live Without

A Road Trip Checklist You Can't Live WithoutSummer is going to be here before you know it and the inevitable summer road trip is bound to come up sooner or later. If you take at least one or two open road adventures each year, then you probably know what to expect. If, however, this is your first year venturing out into the great wide open, there are a few things you can't leave without. Trust me, this is one list you're going to want to check twice...

Vehicle maintenance

First and foremost, before venturing out on any road trip, you need to make sure your car is ready for the drive. That means a fresh oil change and having a tech look over your vehicle for any potential problems. Make sure all fluids are topped off and that everything is functioning properly before you even think of hitting the open road.

GPS and a map or two

Think the TomTom that you have is enough navigation to get you where you're going? Let me be the first to tell you that technology isn't always predictable and TomTom has been known to strand more than a few drivers since its inception.

If your GPS breaks or loses its satellite signal, you're going to be up the creek without a paddle if you don't have some good old-fashioned maps in the glove box. A word to the wise? Don't rely solely on a GPS device to navigate your road trip for you.

Food and water

You never really plan on a breakdown, but if one happens you need food and water to tide you over till help arrives. Think food and water aren't that important because you don't plan on being stranded long?

Consider a broken down car, 100-degree heat and no air conditioning. Water sounds like a good idea, doesn't it? Make sure you have enough for at least a day packed in the trunk. Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do you'll be glad it's there.

A few other items

Of course you should also have a few other items on you. A credit card for emergencies, a cell phone, a CB radio and some CDs for the road are always a good idea. By preparing properly you'll be ready for anything when you finally do set out on that legendary road trip this summer.
