6 Ways to Be Happier | |
Happiness is a state of mind. People can choose whether to be happy… or not. It's a feeling that radiates through your entire being but there are so many events in life that have the potential to strip away our happiness (if we let it). That's not to say that you could be 100% happy all the time, but you can do a number of things to relieve anxiety, frustrations, sadness, anger or fear to bring yourself back to a state of happiness several times throughout each day if you make a conscious effort to do so.
- Laugh! Study after study have proven that laughter raises the endorphin level in the body, as well as a number of other pleasure-inducing hormones. In addition, laughing reduces the production of stress hormones.
- Listen to music. Music activates the same parts of the brain that food and sex activate, resulting in a "happy boost". Studies have also found music is relaxing and lowers heart rates, blood pressure, and the strain on the heart for doing it's job is reduced. Dancing to music can help boost your energy level while benefiting from the effects of music.
- Learn how to say no. Women in particular seem to have a difficult time saying no. If you're already at maximum capacity for the number of events or activities you're involved in and someone asks for help running their church fundraiser or other event- learn how to say no.
- Make the air smell good. Aromatherapy benefits are real. Studies have shown that the scent of rosemary will lower anxiety levels and increase alertness while lavender increases relaxation brain waves. You can scent the air with candles, essential oil diffusers, plug-in or table top air fresheners, or potpourri.
- Acknowledge what you have. Take time to think about everything in your life you are grateful for - even in your most difficult times, you can think about the positives in your life. Consciously switching your thoughts from all that is going wrong for you at the moment to the things that have gone right for you will result in an improved mood. Make a list of things you've accomplished already, the people you love, and anything that makes you happy and remind yourself of it daily.
- Find a quite place for alone time. Socializing is important, but with the busy pace that most of our lives have become accustomed to, taking time to be alone is important. Find a spot in the library, local museum or park where you can go regularly. You don't have to stay long - but taking ten or fifteen minutes for yourself to relax and quiet your mind will go a long way toward improving your overall mood.
